Spouse's Chromebook did this and and we were both baffled, but could see that there was power to the book-I knew the illumination setting fix, but that didn't help. The force-power-down, then close and wait 3 seconds was a trick I didn't know, and it worked! Thanks so much... (Although my spouse is now out of bed and on the computer instead.)

Yay! My son brought home his school's Chromebook and in the middle of his assignment, it just went black! Ngl but we started to freak out because we did A LOT of work. The powering off and closing the lid trick worked for us and we were able to pick up where we left off on his school project. OMG thank you for showing us this trick to get the darn thing working again!

That I'd an answer I would like to get on in as well! So maybe he'll read this and reply. Perhaps shutting down without signing off is the cause. I know me personally. I have let my laptop die in the middle of having windows open on the screen still. 🙃 GUILTY!

No, didn't help. Even disconnected the battery internally. Also did the who hit the refresh button and power button. I got it to work once now it's not coming back on.

@@who7237 I eventually got it to work. I had to completely open up my computer disconnect the battery and then the lcd screen. Reconnect everything and it works just fine now

Legit! All I had to do was get it off, close the lid, open and auto turn on. But it would NOT cycle without those steps. Kudos

I suspected i had a hardware issue on my sons chromebook.. has some clear drops on the metal frame. I was very surprised that this worked even though i tried regular hard shut down and a few other things. Following these exact steps... hard shutdown, leave it closed for 3 seconds, open, and let it boot. Boom his computer is fixed. Thanks

This wasn't my issue exactly but I tried it anyway. Your advice is solid so I want to know if you know anything about a flashing screen. The cromebook will not come on, only flashes dark and bright. These aren't the kind if devices you want to consider reliable. I see lots of comments about how their experience with black screened Chromebooks may have impacted their work significantly. Mine is still black screen... it used to at least show recovery but now it's just always black screened 😩

Hi! I hope you can help me with my chromebook. It's just months old, but unfortunately out warranty. Last month it suddenly turned off, it didn't turned on even if it's charged ( i know cus the led is green). So I took it to a tech then it was already fixed. But just days after again it suddenly turned off, no power. I charged it over 24 hours, I even used 220v power supply (cus Im here in Japan and the input is 110 only). I tried every hard reset and looked up in the internet, still it doesn't turn on. What should I do? The power button only lights on when i press it.
