My German grandfather trotted off to fight with the Republicans in the battle for Madrid in '36. He survived and was locked up in KZ Boergermoor on his return. He was 52 at the time. He lived to tell the tale until death eventually caught up with him at 87.

My mums brother hitch hiked to Spain to fight he was from north of England. At the end he managed to escape to France and got home to UK. He lost his life on D Day. I’ve inherited his diaries and am in the process of donating them to the Imperial War Museum❤

Your mom's brother is a real hero. My grandfather's brother fought in Spain in 1937. He died in 1942 defending Stalingrad. Greetings from Russia.

Do not forget the people who joined the International Brigade did so out of principle, they resisted pressure from the church and elsewhere. We should all acknowledge that and raise a glass to them wherever they came from

Huge respect and gratefulness from Bosnian and Yugoslavian. Our brave fathers understood the danger and evil of fascism and give their lives to stop it together in Spain in International brigades. My grandpa (may heaven keep his soul) was a Catalan Republican who fought against Franco's troops for 17 months in a fecking trench with water up to the knee, then he was captured and put in a concentracion camp. He managed to escape and walked back home, more than 1.000 km through forests and mountains. He told me how he fought alongside Canadian, American and Irish folks. Thank yous for your service, for fighting side by side with me 19 year old grandad, trying to keep the fascists away from my land. Forever grateful to those brave people. @@GerryBolger Thank you very much, he was a hero at least to me, and I loved him so much. He got a medal from the Republican Government during war for "bravery in time of need", for securing the supplies during an airstrike, but when the fascists got in power they stripped him of it.

As a Republican, I feel proud and very grateful to all these people who gave their lives to fight against the fascism of a dictator like Franco, you will always be in our hearts, Long live the Fifth Brigade, Thank you Christy Moore for this beautiful song.

I'm Spanish too and I didn't know this song, let alone people in Scotland & Ireland sang to this. This makes me proud of you, we Spaniards will never be grateful enough for the effort the IB made fighting against fascism. This brings tears to my eyes... Long live the international working class. This is the favourite song of our family patriarch, Patrick Brosnan, from Fenit on the Dingle peninsula, in County Kerry. He is currently in hospital, with a terminal bleed on the brain and he's dying. he's not expected to survive long at all. days perhaps. his Sister and Mother both died within 6 weeks of one another in 1969, leaving him utterly alone in this world, in a foreign country. He made a life for himself here, found a wife and raised a family, but his only Son, my Cousin Dominic, died suddenly just a few weeks ago 💔💔 This is their favourite song , and I already know heaven will have loudspeakers, from which the two of them can enjoy listening to, but in these final few days of his life on earth, would you kind people please keep Patrick and Dominic Brosnan in your prayers? life is so fleeting, that we should treasure every second... I love you all. Granny Brosnan and Grandma, please come and take Patrick. He so loves you both and he will desperately wish to see you again so please come to collect him, and keep his soul safe til we are reunited in eternity...❤

I can't even imagine how hard it must be to go to war to defend your country, knowing that you will probably die. But even less I can imagine how someone can go to fight and die for another country that is not theirs. Glory and eternal thanks to those Irish who fought and died for Spain and democracy

There was no 5th international Brigade,most of the Irish and Scots fought in the 15th international Brigade,Christy used to sing the song with people getting mixed up between quince and quinta,so thank you ☘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪

Great Christy Moore and people who sings with him. I went to station to recive the last brigadist in Barcelona, years ago. I had the honour to shake hands with an old british man, who went to Spain to defend people from fascism. Don't forget them. Excuse my bad english.

In 2008 i was in Galway with my fella and his Fathers side if the family and got talking to a group of people in John Keogh's bar, they had fiddles, guitars, bodharns and few other guys with spoons and washboards using "Shot Gun" Cartridges as the fingers 😂😂😂, Anyway we eneded up going back to a place called "Conamarra" away up the backs of Galway and Christy Moore was there! I later found out that Mike Scott from the Waterboys was also in the house! What an absolute Amazing Party we had on the friday night carried on right through till the sunday morning, Grate people grate place grate Craic 🍀💚🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🇮🇪❤

I have to say I also cry and I play this song often because it is so important to remember the men and women who fought the Facists. How brave were they to travel to Spain and take up arms against the criminal Franco.

As long as I know, Catalan people are Spanish people too. Sadly for the Republic's fate, Catalonia fought its own Civil War between fascists, republicans and left-revolutionaries until 1937... And Barcelona didn't try to resist as Madrid did for three years, even with the european conflict so near which, as president Negrín said, will force France and the UK to join the fight in Spain. Anyway, all our gratitude to the people who came from all over the world just to help and fight against fascism on this lost nook. Maybe one of the greatest solidarity fact, it will never be a defeact while some of us will still be remembering them.

If this song does not hit you right in the heart you are dead inside.

Is is unbelievable that it is out of Spain where the real gratitude for fighting like one single man for freedom is really being praised, clear example that in Spain we are still goberned by the heirs of the fascist regime. You can't imagine how proud this makes me be, not for being Spanish nor Irish, but for being part of the proud working class of the world, united we stand! Que viva la lucha de la clase obrera y la Quinta Brigada!
