There's NO CGI in this film. All the visual effects were done with miniatures, matte paintings, and front screen projections using a system called Zoptic which allowed for a very dynamic, fluid style of front projection process shots.

That scene in Lois' apartment where Christopher Reeve slips seamlessly between 2 distinctly different personalities is an exhibition of superb acting. He makes it believable that no one realizes that Clark and Superman are the same person using nothing but a pair of glasses, a change in posture and by changing the tone and pitch of his voice.

There will only be one Superman. And that’s Christopher Reeves. He was a Superman in heart. He helped a lot of people before and after his injury. And I completely understand the giddiness you feel watching this. I did too when I was younger. Had such a crush on him. Check out “somewhere in time”. One of my all time fave movies. And he stars in it.

Fun fact: The woman on the train with the little girl named Lois, was a cameo by Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman television show that ran from 1953-1958. George Reeves famously played the man of steel on the show. Reeves died in 1959 at the age of 45 under suspicious circumstances.

Two men were born to play Superman: Christopher Reeve--and his predecessor, George Reeves. They played Superman/Clark completely differently, but they were both valid interpretations! Both actors were charismatic and utterly charming--the special sauce needed for anyone who aspires to play Superman and walk in their shoes.

You forgot that the guy who played Lois' father on the train was actor Kirk Alyn, who played the very first live-action Superman in two serials: Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs Superman (1950).

The finest Superman...Couldn't agree more. Just gorgeous. Christopher Reeve was my first crush, at the ripe old age of 3 😂. Another with him is Somewhere in Time, also staring Jane Seymour. Stunningly handsome man. But he was funny too as seen in Noises Off-which you would also adore😊

When Reeves broke his neck i had high hopes because i survived a broken neck and he's Superman! He broke one more bone than me and held on so long and fought so hard. He passed away the day i gave birth to my first son(3rd child! Of 5!) . I was so sad. It hit me different because i lived 5 years and had 3 babies and this poor man suffered so much. Im still suffering pain but still living life without the use of my neck besides holding my head up

Bless you dear one! My best friend also broke her neck in a car accident, thankfully she was not paralysed but she had to learn to do everything again. Since then she’s had 5 children! You sound very much like her, someone who has empathy for others and determination to live her best life. Bless you! Christopher holds a very special place in our hearts❤️

I'm sorry that happened to you. It should be a reminder to everyone, we're not "supermen". I see too many people being reckless around me every day, either in the workplace or driving on the road, as if they think they're immortal. I've had a couple injuries in the last 5 years myself and it has taught me to be more careful and observant of my surroundings.

@@AirstripOne-nd4du I agree. Sorry you had to deal with that. Its very tough living with a broken neck but I have a great attitude to go with it so that helps. Like the other day I was stuck in an airport for 26 hours after 3 flights were cancelled or missed. It was a night mare and had to sleep on the cold floor and everyone was complimenting me in how week I was taking it with the amount if pain I was in.. mental is such a huge part of recovery

Superman's father is like an AI version. It can imitate his father's thinking and give answers based on his knowledge.

Christopher Reeve was a great Superman. He was very handsome and charming. Such a tragedy when he was injured. He was so courageous. He and Robin Williams were great friends. We lost both much too soon.

Chris Reeve set the bar high! The tag line for the movie was “You’ll believe a man can fly!” Superman hadn’t ever flown on tv and he used to say “Up, up and away.”

That's not exactly true. George Reeves (not Reeve) flew all the time in "The Adventures of Superman" (1952-58). It just wasn't as believable as the flying scenes in this movie. The two scenes that always stand out to me, that show why this film and why Reeve get Superman better than anyone else ever has, is the scene with him rescuing the kitten from the tree and when he delivers Luthor and Otis to prison. I love that we see him take time out of all the craziness to rescue a kitten from a tree, because EVERYONE matters to him, no matter how young or how average they may be. He took time to do that because it mattered - to both the little girl and to him. The prison scene gets me every time when the warden tells him that the country is safe thanks to him. He doesn't take that adolation, nor ask for it. Rather, he reminds them that "we're all part of the same team." THAT is Superman! I've always said that we should all strive to be like him. His super power isn't all the strength and abilities; rather, it's his selflessness and willingness to put the needs of others over his own. Reeve is perfection. And that final shot of him smiling directly at us at the end is something that will always bring a tear to my eye and make me smile. They truly don't make them like this one anymore. So glad you enjoyed it!!!

All those decades since this came out and I believe that this is still the gold standard for superhero movies. This paved the way for all other superhero movies.

Actor, who plays Superman in this classic was Christopher Reeve. In 1995, Reeve suffered cervical spinal injury after thrown off from horse. He was paralyzed from the neck down. Reeve and his Dana created a foundation for research of spinal injuries. He used breathing equipment to breath. Sadly, Reeve died from heart failure in 2004. His wife, Dana diagnosed with cancer 10 months after her husband's death. She died in 2006. Their son, Will Reeve continues on their foundation.

More than any other actor to play the character, Christopher Reeves understood that there is a third side. Superman, Clark, and Kal-El. Kal-El is the true self, the one he can only be in private, while Superman and Clark are facades. And the true tragedy of Superman is that so few know Kal-El, leaving him isolated no matter how hard he tries to be part of the world.

The duality (or trinity, as you point out) of superheroes that have secret identities is always an interesting discussion, as a metaphor for the multiple facets that all people have. As the two quintessential Super-heroes, Superman and Batman have been compared many, many times. Even in "Kill Bill" there is a monologue about it. (I don't agree with the conclusions that "Bill" comes to, but his interpretations does speak to his (Bill's) character.) [Most people agree that "The Batman" is really who that man is; it has consumed him to his core. "Bruce Wayne" is merely his public face. The little boy who lost his parents is still in there somewhere; little Bruce still exists. But the vengeance, the pursuit of perfect Justice: the Detective, The Bat: that's who the man is, regardless of what he's wearing. He's not his suit, or his cowl, or his cape, or his gadgets; those are simply the tools he uses to further his goals. Without them, he's still Batman. His highly trained body and mind are always that.] I've always felt that *this* man: Clark / Kal-El / Superman: At his core, he is the boy raised from infancy by a decent, hard-working, old-fashioned core-morals couple in Kansas. That is where his sense of justice, his sense of right and wrong, of responsibility, of goodness and decency: they all came from how he was raised by his human parents. If one were to give a name to that person, it would probably have to be the name they gave him: Clark Kent. When Clark learned of his extra-terrestrial origins, he learned of his birth name: Kal-El. Clark Kent- the son of Martha and Jonathan Kent: That is who the man is, at his core. Who he was raised to be, where his heart truly lives. That's my interpretation, anyway. I mostly agree with you, but with a slight amendment- separating Clark from "Clark." I definitely agree with what you say about his isolation. His situation is unique. Especially in this film, with no other superheroes that are known to exist: he is completely unique on the planet. (not counting the villains trapped in the two-dimensional prison floating in space...). He is, ultimately, unique and alone. And yeah: Chris portrayed that vulnerability, as well as his strength of character and moral center, as no other actor has done (so far). Henry Cavill has been a great Superman; I like him very much. But Chris' depth of character is still the GreatestOfAllTime.

@@TSIRKLAND I agree completely. I've always felt Bill was wrong about Superman being the real person and Clark only a creation, i.e. a rather negative comment on humanity. For me, he's only really comfortable as Clark because that's when he can really be himself, even down to the occasional clumsiness and nerdishness. I see Superman as Clark's Captain Marvel-like fantasy image.

Apparently Kryptonian technology is so advanced that it can use holographic images as interfaces with their computer system. I saw this in the theaters when it first came out and ALL us ladies fell in love with Christopher Reeve. He is, to date, the best superman there ever was. He had the looks, the build and was an amazing actor. The scene where Lois "interviews: superman was a lot of ad libbing done by them both. He was wonderful in "Somewhere In Time' too.

If he was "the man" he wouldn't have recycled the EXACT same music, which is why it sounds the same - IT IS! Zimmer's the man, that's why EVERYONE is a cheap copy of him.

This movie was amazing in its day, and I'm thrilled to see that it still is. I remember when it came out, there were no enclosed phone booths around anymore, just kiosks -- very "modern" at the time! And everyone was asking how he was going to change costumes without a phone booth? How were they going to handle it? And everyone was stunned at how much like a stand-up mensch he played the character. Superman is such an icon that well, how do you make him a person as well? And Reeve did it. I loved the scene outside of Lois Lane's apartment when she's quizzing him. "Height and weight?" "Six foot two, 190 pounds," or whatever it was. And he's just sitting there and answering like he's at the doctor's office. He really was able to turn this unrealistic, unreasonable icon into a human being. And from all accounts, Reeve himself really was just this decent, pleasant guy. The color also is such a relief after two and a half decades of movies being desaturated and dour just to prove some edgy point. This movie cheers up your retinas and reminds you of how very beautiful a movie can be, instead of all the crummy slate grey and p*ss yellow we get nowdays.

Yes they do, if they didn't, everything else wouldn't flop. It's their own company that doesn't understand the characters anymore, and some fans. The rest of us know. Hopefully the third time WB is sold the comics division will be dissolved and the character rights' will revert back to the creators' families - they would actually find a company that will TAKE CARE of the character again.@@GilesArt

Fun facts: The studio wanted Robert Redford and Stockard Channing to play Superman and Lois Lane but Richard Donner knew better. -They knew they had their Lois after Margot Kidder and Reeves's read together, with Reeves in the suit. She trembled as she spoke and that was what won her the role over Channing! -Kryptonians speak using *parliamentary* English. The kind that politicians use. -Lana Lang is Clarks closest friend... and the only one to know his secret. In the comics, she was his *first* rescue. The reason why that station reminded you of Union station in Toronto, is because it is! The majority of this film was shot in Alberta with a few scenes shot in Toronto and the Hoover Dam.

I still remember how they said that there were two endings to "King Kong meets Godzilla" and for years I believed it... Then it was revealed that there was only *one ending.* I was crushed. The look on Superman's face when Lois starts ranting after he time travelled to save her makes it crystal clear why he loves her.

This movie is extremely special to me. I've seen it first when I was around 4-5 years old, I still remember the moment I saw Reeve's in the suit for the first time and heard the iconic theme by John Williams. I always jumped on my grandma's sofas trying to fly to the sky. I had a lonely childhood but after all these years, I think about him as a symbol of hope and strength. Not just because of the character he played, but the way he lived his life and reacted to his tragic event.

Christopher Reeve's performance as Clark Kent/Superman is undoubtedly great. Christopher Reeve immediately engrained himself into the public conscience, and is still to this day the definitive take on the character.

To answer your question, Luthor first appeared in Superman comics in the 1940s with a full head of hair. Then, a little later, Superman battled a bald villain. Soon, Luthor reappeared, but this time he was drawn (by accident, very likely) to look like the second (bald) villain. From that point on Luthor was typically drawn as a bald man in a business suit (except for the times when we'd look in on him in prison, where he wears his gray convict clothes.) A little later, the Superboy comics started up and it was established there that Clark/Superboy and young genius Lex Luthor were friends as teenagers in Smallville. Lex conducted an experiment that backfired, releasing toxic gas into the air. Superboy rescued him--but Lex was now completely bald, as a reaction to the gas. He irrationally blamed Superboy for his baldness, and never forgave him, thus starting the continuous Superman/Luthor enmity for the rest of their lives. That's the classical Silver Age explanation, but there are more recent, varying explanations for why Lex is bald. Perhaps others could pick up where I'm pausing and they will provide those answers.

He was my Aunt's favorite. For me its Henry Cavill. You should check out the TV series Smallville. It's about how Clark Kent discovered his journey. The pilot for that show aired a few weeks after 9/11/2001. So many people tuned into the show then. It went 10 seasons and Tom Welling played Clark Kent. He was outstanding as Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent. For me Tom Welling and Henry Cavill are the best Supermans. You will love Smallville! Any Smallville fans out there besides me? That show sort of began all these superhero DC multi verse movies with the Flash, Green Arrow, etc. Christoper Reeves guest starred in Smallville a few times and loved the show. Jane Seymour was amazing friends with him and was crushed when he died. She named her son Christopher after him. Those 2 were wonderful in Somewhere in Time. What the? This must be an extended cut. Some of these scenes are new to me. For their time, these movies had pretty good effects, but they're badly dated now, as well as some of the ideas. That having been said though, I think the spirit of Superman is best embodied in the Christopher Reeve movies. I'm hoping the new Superman movie being made now might get the character right, but not holding my breath. To answer your question about Kal-El's dialogue with his father's program, it is an AI. They kind of glossed over it because in the late 70s people had primitive ideas how AI would work. It was simpler to say he had anticipated his son's questions, but there clearly must be more to it than that. In "Man of Steel" it was explained that it was an AI with Jor-El's memories, which makes complete sense to me and is one of the few things about that movie I'd say they got right. Regarding telepathy, nope, Superman doesn't have that. He couldn't read Lois' mind. I wouldn't doubt that he can pick up on her vitals, heart-beat, etc. though, and he could tell she was enjoying being around him and having that experience. Since he obviously likes her, he's bound to smile about that. The time travel thing, I really wish they hadn't done that in this movie. Basically, the theory is similar to that in (a certain science fiction movie I won't name so as not to spoil it), in which they fly at a fast rate of speed around the sun. In this case, Supes is using the earth to go back in time. Is it theoretically sound? I don't think so, but I'm sure it's something he's done in a comic book or two. I think it's lazy writing, but that's adult me speaking. Kid me thought it was fine.

Although Henry Cavill did a great job, nobody has ever been able to portray the duality of Clark Kent and Superman as well as Christopher Reeve. For that reason, his portrayal in still the best of all.

In reference to it seeming like they're having an actual conversation: Have you ever used the "help" section and felt helped? Like "that was exactly the answer to my question"? Have you ever answered "yes" to "was this answer helpful"? I'm guessing no.

Here are the answers to your questions - (1) Superman cannot read peoples minds, it was just something Lois was thinking when they were flying together, (2) Superman cannot actually reverse time, its not one of his powers, it was just something they did in the movie and (3) the comics have different interpretations as to why Lex Luthor is bald, the original story is that when the artist introduced the character of Lex Luthor he accidentally drew him without hair, another story is that when Superboy was attempting to put out a fire in young Lex Luthors laboratory, the chemicals caused Luthor to lose his hair but the most recent story used in today's comics is that Luthor simply had a receding hairline when caused him to lose his hair

Well, he can't _reverse_ time, but he can fly so fast he goes _back_ in time. Which I suspect is what was happening there. Of course that begs the question "What happened to the Superman who was diverting the missiles?" To which I say "it's just a show, we should really just relax." :D

Oh hunni I just missed you! Christopher was a marvel! What a man. There’s only one Superman for me. It’s the first film I’d ever seen at the cinema where the audience went crazy! When he had his accident I wrote him a letter for his recovery, and told him how much he was loved. Unbelievably, a family friend replied! It was a beautiful letter. Thinking of the drama around his life at that time, l can’t get over the big big hearts of both Christopher and the people around him. What a real, true man. What made Christopher Reeve's Superman so good is that he's not tortured he's just a lovable hero that's what Superman is. Superman's charm and overall kindness are what make him the ideal superhero. I'm tired of the dark and gritty takes on Superman it just doesn't work because he's not a dark and gritty character. Superman is as lighthearted as they come he inspires us to be the best versions of ourselves. Even Batman is inspired by Superman's kindness and that says a lot.

Your reactions are so adorable. This is Mr. Christopher Reeve. He was amazing man on and off set. He was a good man. He embodied Superman on and off film. His acting career was not limited to Superman but one of my favorite movies in Somewhere in Time. Even the actress in that movie said how good of man he was and delight to work with. Jor El was able to upload his consciousness. So, he literally was talking to his dad. Also, his mother did to. There are scenes in others that she talks to Clark. What I love is they showcase Superman is not just power. He was highly intelligent and wise man too.

@@billolsen4360 "Transfer" was usually used. At least that's what I recall from sci-fi media of the time. I was a kid, so there were probably more terms I just don't remember or never saw/heard.

The little Lois Lane girl on the train her mother was actually Nowell Nelly who played Lois Lane in the 1950s Superman series with George Reeves playing Superman in that 1950s series!!!

Hello. Superman is my second favorite superhero. Christopher Reeve was a PERFECT Superman, like they snatched him right out of DC Comics. He made everyone believe that a man could fly. The creators of Superman - Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster cried at the premiere of Superman 78. If the creators approve, you did what you were supposed to do. I've read so many Superman comics, he truly is a wonderful character. Humans have to read his comics, to really understand the character inside and out, due to the comics offering over 80 years of storytelling. No matter how many times I watch this Superman movie, it remains special. It's the GOLD standard for what superhero movies should be. As a young kid in the late 70's, having both Superman the Movie and Star Wars as cinematic experiences was mindblowing at the time. These two movies cemented my lifelong love for cinema, as they had a certain magic that's lost with modern movies. I'm sure the generations that grew up with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings feel the same.

Saw this with my parents and brother when it premiered in the theater. Reeves was great. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you it's another one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

In "Superman: The Movie," the concept of time travel is portrayed in a manner consistent with some theoretical principles of relativity. Essentially, as a person approaches the speed of light, time dilation occurs, meaning time appears to slow down for them relative to an outside observer. Superman: The Movie was the first film I saw in theaters. I was almost 5 years old when my father took me one Saturday afternoon in 1979. And he's another film bad guy who hires incompetent nincompoops as his assistants! Just like Darth Vader and The Emperor who drafted all those storm troopers who can't shoot straight..

This was the FIRST of the super hero movies of the modern era. CGI wasn't really there yet but the special effects were awesome for the time. It was also the end of the innocence. A pivotal point in my life also.

Every hero is either an orphan or a foundling.

In the comics, its been established that superman is far more powerful than even HE understands. In those comics, he doesnt really try to explore and understand the nature of what he is and is truly capable of. Superman is a "pinocchio" character. In other words, all he wants to be is a "real boy" or rather...a human being/farmer just like the people who loved him, so when you see superman, you see the very least of what he is capable of, because of self imposed limitations. When he lifts things, flies, etc..he isnt actually doing these things physically. He is basically altering reality. This is why he can do things that violate physics. Essentially, he is a god who wants to be a man. There are some future stories that show superman alive at the very end of our universe, still protecting, and far more powerful than what you see in the movies. He is a very interesting character.
