Christopher Lee interview, Ireland 1965
Ойын-сауық
An interview with actor Christopher Lee who was in Ireland for the filming of ‘The Face of Fu Manchu’. The actor talks to Des Keogh about his career.
Lee explains how over 13 years he has played many parts but recently has become known for playing villains. He puts this down to playing the Marquis Evremonde in the film ‘A Tale of Two Cities’.
Lee goes on to explain that when he plays villains or monsters, he likes to show the audience the loneliness of evil. Talking about audiences for horror films Lee says they like to be thrilled and that film offers an outlet for a range of feelings and being frightened is one of those emotions.
The interview was broadcast as part of the ‘Newsbeat’ programme on 24 February 1965.
‘Newsbeat’ was a half-hour feature programme presented by Frank Hall and ran for 7 years from September 1964 to June 1971. ‘Newsbeat’ went out from Monday to Friday on RTÉ television and reported on current affairs and issues of local interest from around Ireland. The final programme was broadcast on the 11 June 1971.

He was a personal friend of Tolkien and a lord of the rings fan. He was cast perfectly for Saruman. RIP

Oh my god, what is this blatant lie? He randomly met Tolkien once when he was drunk at a bar and asked him permission to play Gandalf - and Tolkien, also pretty drunk, gave him his blessing. They were in no way friends.

Fun fact: In 1939 in Paris, Christopher Lee witnessed the last ever public execution in France when serial killer Eugene Weidman was beheaded by guillotine on the street. This man had a very interesting life.

The thing I notice the most when he speaks is his crisp English accent and the total absence of “Err….erm….you know….the errrr…..”. Intelligent, interesting and engaging which is everything that our current politicians are not.

And no one can replicate such a powerful and distinct voice. Not even his stand-in Corey Burton, who as amazing as he is with playing Lee’s roles, can match Lee’s defining presence of a voice.

Man, I really wish that if Christopher Lee was still alive today, I would’ve love to just invite him to dinner and just chat about stories for hours. He’s the kind of person I would be invested in and never get tired. RIP Christopher Lee

Christopher Lee is one of those people on my list whom I want to meet in the next life, alongside his dear friend Peter Cushing, and shake their hands, thanking them for making some of the greatest scary movies together, and for simply being such charming gentlemen in Hollywood and to the world as a whole.
I've been watching his interviews a lot recently, and let me say: that suit got some milage.
He speaks so eloquently with such conviction

Christopher Lee is one of my very favorite actors. He was excellent in his craft and was such an elegant and handsome man. Yesterday, two of his movies were on the TCM channel - The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. I have enjoyed Mr. Lee's movies since I was about 4 years old. This man was a movie legend and played every character with class and charisma and with a certain amount of sympathy. God bless you, Mr. Lee, and RIP. ❤🌸 🙏
