Even though I am a theist, I have always enjoyed Christopher's writings, debates and his love and use of the English language. He brought a much needed skepticism and accountability to politics and organized religion. I was very sorry to see him become so sick and his passing left a tremendous void in our generation. I think it could have been fittingly said of Christopher, as it was only moments after Abraham Lincoln died ... He now he belongs to the ages.

You have had the hate and the fiction now the TRUTH ... The Missionaries of Charity established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, now known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. In 2020 it consisted of 5,167 religious sisters." A member of the congregation must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor." Missionaries care for those who include refugees, former prostitutes, the mentally ill, sick children, abandoned children, lepers, people with AIDS, the aged, and convalescent. They have schools that are run by volunteers to teach abandoned street children and run soup kitchens as well as other services according to the community needs. These services are provided, without charge, to people regardless of their religion or social status. Their mission is to care for (in Mother Teresa's words) "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." It began as a small community with 12 members in Calcutta (now Kolkata), and in 2020 had 5,167 members serving in 139 countries in 760 homes, with 244 of these homes in India. The sisters run orphanages, homes for those dying of AIDS, charity centres worldwide, and care for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe and Australia. They have 19 homes in Kolkata (Calcutta) alone which include homes for women, orphaned children and homes for the dying; a school for street children, and a leper colony. Those who are sisters or Priests in the Charity visit their homes every five years but do not take annual holidays The first home of the Missionaries of Charity in the United States was established in the South Bronx New York, ] Their first rural mission in the United States, in 1982, was in one of the poorest, former coal mining areas of Kentucky, where they still serve. The quality of care offered to terminally ill patients in the Home for the Dying in Calcutta was the subject of discussion in the mid-1990s. Some British observers, on the basis of short visits, drew unfavourable comparisons with the standard of care available in hospices in the United Kingdom. Remarks made by Dr. Robin Fox relative to the lack of full-time medically-trained personnel and the absence of strong analgesics were published in a brief memoir in an issue of The Lancet in 1994. These remarks were criticised in a later issue of The Lancet on the ground that they failed to take account of Indian conditions, specifically the fact that government regulations effectively precluded the use of morphine outside large hospitals In Phoenix, Arizona, the sisters' accommodation for 40 homeless men is funded by a clothier, featured in Vogue, who grew up within a few blocks of Mother Teresa's original home for the dying destitute in Kalighat, Calcutta. Princess Diana, who was very close to Mother Teresa, wrote that she found in her "the direction I've been searching for all these years". Mother Teresa's sisters were particularly hard hit by the 2020 outbreak of COVID-19, as in places they continued to distribute food and minister to the poor who had been affected. Violence against missionaries In July 1998 in Al Hudaydah, Yemen, three Missionaries of Charity, two Indians and a Filipina, were shot and killed as they left a hospital. In March 2016 in Aden, Yemen, sixteen people were shot and killed in a home for the elderly operated by the Missionaries of Charity. Among the dead were four missionary sisters: Sisters Marguerite and Reginette from Rwanda, Sister Anselm from India and Sister Judit from Kenya. Bishop Hinder described the attack as "religiously-motivated". A Salesian Syro-Malabar priest who was living at the facility, Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil of Bangalore, India, was taken prisoner by the attackers.

Touching on the fraudulence, she also went to get ace western healthcare treatment once or twice which is hypocritical when looking at her own views on dying. When she said that suffering brings you closer to God, the action she took in dealing with her own health, doesn't really reflect her framework influenced by her religious precepts that dictated the operations of her own missionaries and well-being of the children she 'looked after'. If that's what she truly believed then she was a hyprocrite and dangerous. If not then, well, she was obviously intentionally evil and still hyprocritical and dangerous.

I like the principle of objectivity. It's a great aspiration. I like the denouncing of harmful actions, whoever perpetrated them, and especially when they are irrationally excused due to some perceived saintliness. What we must be cautious of, however, is thinking that embracing "objectivity" is like innoculation, over in a shot, thereafter protecting us from all rational error. Through his subjective, fallible lens, Hitchens cites wickedness of a religious person to condemn religion.

Plus, while he fast became the poster child for Atheism, his writings and essays, dealt with a vast amount of topics, more than just religion, such as his books on Jefferson, Orwell, Kissinger, Clinton, and architecture, among the many others. I simply love his style. Also being actively a part of religious beliefs and activity for over 22 years, there are many things that I see as detestable and corrupt, which can also be found in all of life and practice, where people are present.

It brings me immense joy and pleasure to see a man among us who stood up and spoke and has shown ME the truth. I am not ashamed that I have left the Christian faith. It is appalling to me now. It has raised me well with absolutely beautiful hard working and extremely loving and doting parents and Christian friends. But I’m afraid that it still cannot keep me from wanting to shout out to the whole world to seeeee the lie it is and has been covering up for 100s of years. Sorry to ramble. Thank you Mr. Hitchens. I am sincerely grateful for your effort toward letting the world see the truth in religion.

For anyone, not just Christopher Hitchens, to make these kind of statements about an individual who has presented themselves in the way that this subject has, need to make absolutely certain that what they are saying is based on fact. If it were not, then a defamation case could certainly be actioned against the person who has said these things. Of all the arguements Hitch has offered to anyone that is willing to take him on in an adverse position, he has responded with a depth of knowledge and understanding on any subject he has been challenged on. This happens because he is willing to research his subjects in great depth. If only many people were willing to do this, then maybe, just maybe, human beings would spend less time fighting about who's right and who's wrong and spend more time living harmoniously.

Geez, you can tell by the comments how heated people get over religion. I am a Christian, but I apsolutely agree that mother Theresa was a fraud and the people who run the Catholic Church (as well as any church that profits off of their congregation). For any catholic person, don't jump down my throat- you were probably born catholic so it's tradition and family time, I don't blame you. Jesus wanted to help the poor and lived a humble poor life hisself. I don't believe he would approve of the Catholic Church one bit- they have enough money to probably feed and cloth the world yet they do nothing. Mother Theresa gave her time to the poor but collected millions in their name while watching them suffer, that doesn't make her an honest Christian in my eyes. Not judging her-just making an observation. And don't attack me if you are atheist- my beliefs are mine and yours are yours

Jessica Ann Well, I was born in Italy, and guess where Vatican State is... That's right, in the middle of our capital city. I was born Christian, and baptized, and forced to attend extra schools on Saturdays up until the age of 9, when I realied the old woman who "taught" there had no answers for my questions. (Poor lady... I actually liked her). Then I simply refused and I don't have any other sacraments. So yeah, it's not impossible to grow out of religions, or at least Catholicism.

@PTSD101 I should also mention that Mother Teresa saw it as as her God given right never to have to pay anyone for anything. Once she bought food for her nuns in London for GB£500. When she was told she'd have to pay at the till, the diminutive seemingly harmless nun showed her Balkan temper and shouted, "This is for the work of God!" She raged so loud and so long that eventually a businessman waiting in the queue paid up on her behalf.

That is essentially a filtering process. Those who need help, but have a thinking brain get told go to hell. And if you accept help and think you're being lied to, get out, go to hell, God hates you as well unless you repent and come back to the b.s. 😂 it's so sickening 😅 but...you can always lie, and THAT'S what religion really teaches. That's why liars do so well in it.

I don't make many comments on KZread, but here I am, because I have not seen this author post any SPAM. People who attempt to censor others opinions by hitting the Spam function, are no better then those that burn books. As for religion, the more you think about it, especially when you research the beginnings of most of the more accepted religions, the less sense it makes. The more sense it makes as to why each one wants to eliminate the others. Killing to achieve peace, does not bring peace.
