    Man, I miss Christopher Hitchens. Without a doubt one of the greatest minds of the second half of the 20th century and first decade of the 21st. R.I.P. comrade....

    Oh how I miss the late great Hitch..a giant of a man, so desperately needed in this world. Me perennial regret is to never have met him. 😭 I really like Wolpe, he's passionate about his beliefs, well read, a good speaker, he really believed he was a good match for Hitch 🤣🤣 To this day, nobody even comes close to the likes of the late great Hitch, a giant of a man. I do wish he didn't need to leave the party. So glad that I get to enjoy and learn from him with all his wonderful teachings. My perennial regret is that I didn't get the honor of meeting him, yet I feel I know him quite well. I'm so very grateful for all he's taught me. We must continue his plight with equal passion and facts...

    When you think about it, if you believe in god, then you have to admit that god decided that Christopher Hitchens should speak first! :p

    It's almost too bad there isn't an afterlife because Christopher Hitchens is one guy I'd love to share about 3 bottles of scotch with. RIP Hitch.

    Hitch wasn't too quiet. Wolpe was just, like all theists in debates, too loud. It's the only way to override intelligent arguments. ;)

    There was a moment in the debate (no point specific) where I really thought Wolpe was going to whip out a bottle of Snake Oil.

    One of the better formats I've seen for a debate...The coin flip should be instituted in every debate. Also, I liked the idea of the two mics for each speakers during question time ( Gives equal air time for each).

    I've watched this match-up between chris and wolpe from 2007, 2008, and this 2009. Whenever the rabbi even comes close to "scoring a point," it's usually because he either intentionally misrepresents a point or intentionally misunderstands one.

    Why do theists constantly assume that a universe that does not include anything truly "spiritual" (whatever that even means) is somehow inferior. By what basis do they arrive at this conclusion?

    As an atheist father, it is extremely disgusting and telling that Wolpe thinks a parent can only show deep compassion and connection with their child if their god instructs them to. He's saying that he cannot fathom that another father (or mother, but we all know how the patriarchy works) outside of his faith can be close enough to their child without the guidance of god. What a bunch of bullshit. I hope he's ashamed of himself, especially using a personal story to cloak his disrespectful attitude towards the rest of us.

    Always enjoyable listening to Christopher Hitchens. The cameraman and audio guy were apparently stoned.

    Rabbi Wolpe just delivers a relentless sermon. Then answers every question or challenge with another set-piece. By contrast, Hitchens comes across as intelligent and well-read; open-minded, and able to think for himself. The rabbii summed this up as "the tricks of your mind close the opening of your heart". He failed to get out of his pulpit and failed to answer any of the key questions.

    The core problem seems really to be that humans don't understand the nature of their own consciousness. Not knowing how it works obviously is scary or frustrating, therefore different cultures invented explanations for it. Nobody knows or can know if we are only bodies or not - and what would be wrong with that? Matter matters and bodies can be gorgeous without the concept of a soul.

  • @MrSpoomonkey
    @MrSpoomonkey11 жыл бұрын

    The rabbi's argument for god summed up is that we all have good feelings now and then - and no one can tell you that you don't so "god matters." In other words - any comforting delusion will do if this is all the value you put into a proposition's truth value.

    The rabbi is confident about things he has little grounding for. Another way of saying that is that he is not afraid of telling lies, of making claims he could not know to be true because the standard for actual truth is more rigorous than his own.

    @@zaddyjacquescormery6613 This video from Cody's Lab gives you an intuitive sense of why Christophers statements about the "collision" of the andromeda galaxy with the milkyway galaxy was a (likely unintentional) red herring due to ignorance of scale. From the perspective of the solar system, a galactic collision is totally irrelevant to life on this planet. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/lneHq7qFed3Oqs4.html&pp=ygUjY29keXNsYWIgZGlzdGFuY2UgYmV0d2VlbiB0aGUgc3RhcnM%3D

    Hitchens entire belief that God does not exists rests solely on the theory of evolution. Take that away and the house of cards will fall, God rest his soul and hopefully he had a death bed conversion. Or we can at least assume he is no longer an atheist, one way or the other.
