Christo's latest art project is made of 7,506 oil barrels

For almost 50 years, the artist duo and couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude have collaborated on temporary, grand-scale art installations all over the world. Christo just unveiled their latest project, The London Mastaba, a floating sculpture made of 7,506 oil barrels in the middle of The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park. Though Jeanne-Claude passed away nine years ago, Christo continues to construct pieces they had planned together. Conceived in 1977 and completed in 2018, it is actually a test run for a larger, permanent mastaba planned in the United Arab Emirates.

Seeing the picture transition from them together to him alone (at 2:15 - 2:20 suddenly made me think of Pixar's "Up" and now I'm sad.

I am ambivalent about producing art for its own sake. Art to me, has value when it illuminates, provokes or titillates us by showcasing some aspects of our real life.

I rather prefer it. It has no bias, no agenda, no message; it is just beautiful for beauty's sake. Its simply pleasing to the eye.

Art sometimes does not have a value.I don't see how this should not illuminate, provoke and titillate.

Beautiful artwork but I can only imagine all the good that could have been done with the hundreds of millions of dollars spent to create these installations. For example, the Gates of New York in Central Park cost 21 million dollars.

Honestly a weird take when you could say this about literally anything. So much could be done to help the world instead of paying actors and athletes.

Lmao "hundreds of millions" is a big stretch. And the projects are self funded from selling his own art pieces to create the grand ones. He couldn't change the world with that little amount of money but he left something behind
