Christmas Tree Wine Stopper

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Just in time for some holiday cheer, Tim turns a Christmas tree wine stopper. He uses Ruth Niles' bottle stopper kit to make a gift worth giving AND keeping.

That looks like a fun project. Every time I watch one of your videos I see some techniques that are helping me improve turning. I really appreciate what you do. Thanks.

I used a lot of Ruth’s stoppers and have had some problems losing the threads. Especially on soft woods. One of the technics I have been using is after I thread it. I pour a little Thin CA on the threads, let it set or spray excellerator. A quick chase of the rereads and so far I haven’t lot a thread. Love the project and the die work. I see one of these on my lathe soon!

You can also use a threaded insert, try Lowes and if not McMaster -Carr, they are awesome. Mandrels are available from Rockler in various thread sizes. You could also go with a bolt of the right thread and put a nut on it and washers in a jacobs chuck. I use threaded inserts all the tine, partly because I have some bottle stopper hardware that is 1/4-20, and that is too delicate for using just threads cut into even hard wood.

Excellent project. BTW; If you can no longer live with the Robust lathe due to the stain incident, I’ll take it off your hands. Brent, Tim really needs a replacement lathe..🥴

Hello Tim, I really love watching your videos. The bottle openers and bottle toppers look like they are top of the line products. I am not a turner by any means, but I like to try different things. After watching your videos, I want to dive right in and do some turning! As far as killing your lathe, I would try to bring it back to life for you! I will even come to your shop and pick it up for you. I have an older pen turning lathe that is ailing. He is on his last legs and he needs a big brother to comfort him. Keep up the great work and humor.

great video. when I turn / complete stoppers I don't use Loctite or epoxy so that if the metal portion needs cleaning, it can be cleaned without damage to the wooden top.

Your English is coming on nicely Tim, a good bit of kit, is a standard phrase here (England) and as I am in the south west region I feel the use of Proper Job should be incorporated at the end of a project. But that wine stopper is definitely a Proper Job. Cheers.

Hey Tim, I don't know if it will work for dye, but it does for stain, try olive oil to take it off your hands. Olive oil is a natural solvent. I thought it was crazy but I was using dark walnut stain, and of course had it all over me, and it took it ALL off.

Not sure I would finish a bottle stopper with lacquer. Alcohol dissolves lacquer. Come to think of it, might play hell with your dye too.
