Theory: he knows Franco is a weird dude who talks to trees, so by now he just smiles and nods at crap like that without listening at all. But this is the first time Franco has said something about a tree talking back. Or he just assumed that it was a person, not a tree, that Franco was referring to, because that's what a normal person would assume if they weren't focused on Franco's thought process and weren't there for everything he said to trees right then.
