    I lived but a stones throw from the Sir George Robey Jim ,that really was a Venue ,I was actually in it before catching the Pogues in a Marquee not too many yards away in Finsbury Park ,the Proclaimers were doing back up but definitely not 5000 miles from the good old Robey ,I remember catching Steve Marriott in there one night which as a confirmed SF's fan was a treat ,great ,great shop that was ,Happy Days

    Ah, the good old days when venues like the Robey and The Cricketers were buzzing with live music and unforgettable performances. It's a shame we can't hop in a time machine and relive those happy days!

    I totally agree! The Glitter Band were fantastic and such nice people! Even then (and this was the 1980s), they said how much they mistrusted Gary (Paul Gadd)…

    Merry Christmas Jim! It’s a quarter to four on Christmas morning here in Massachusetts and I just got home from a twelve hour shift in the emergency room at the local hospital, where I work with psyche patients. Thought I’d try to quickly wind down with a big old bong, a glass of port and whatever I could find on KZread. And there you were, with your usual charming performance of, this time christmas tales from that special time and place. It has worked wonders! Especially effective was your reminiscences of The Cricketers at the Oval, because in ‘81 thru ‘82 I was sometimes working around the corner, out of the Oval Arts Center with various theatre companies. It was before I started busking and getting into performing music but you’d probably have liked the fire eating and smashing pavings slabs over our chests with sledge hammers whilst lying on broken glass! The fringe stuff maybe less so (we were the first men’s anti sexist act on the fringe scene, as the Y Front Theatre Company - two shows, I acted in one and did the lights and sound for the other). If I’d spent two more years in the Oval our paths might have crossed there! Anyway, that’s why I like your videos so much. They take me back to a certain time and place I really enjoy revisiting.

    Merry Christmas, Francis! Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your story! It's amazing how videos take us back to a certain time and place. I'm glad my Christmas tales could help you wind down after a long shift. Merry Christmas to you too! I'm sure the bong and port ("any port in a storm", eh?) helped…

    Hi Jim , Love your videos, great memories of the London pub rock scene , I was bass player in a pretty well unknown .south London rock band called Sensei , we were the band due to play at the Cricketers for our second or third time I think , the night after it was burned down , we turned up with all our gear and saw that it was totally burned out , no one told us we stayed for a while to greet and apologise to any of our punters that were going to show up , no Internet or mobiles in those days !! Keep the videos coming, all the best Steve ....

    Thanks for the kind words! I remember Sensei! To compound their crime, the bikers bought a load of empty speaker boxes from a friend of mine to burn (that's how I know it was a scam) and sold the PA afterwards on the "open market". That and the petrol bomb travelling 90 degrees once it had entered the building! I don't think the fire investigators had much trouble working it out…

    Kirsty was a great loss. There's story in someone's biography (maybe hers?) where an American singer had a hit with The First time Ever I Saw Your Face. Kirsty was on a school trip that happened to cross paths with said singer, and one of her classmates said, "her dad wrote that song". The singer obviously didn't believe this and went on their way. Apologies if I misremembered any part of that story, it is Christmas Eve. And a Merry Christmas to one and all!

  • @JimDriver

    @JimDriver

    Great story! I think the American singer could have been Rita Coolidge, who recorded it as slow and sad as she did because her pet cat had just died! Ewan McColl said that Elvis's version was like "Romeo at the bottom of the Post Office Tower singing up to a Juliet he obviously had never met"… 😀😀 Cheers!

    @@JimDriver Yes Jim, I think it was Rita Coolidge, who was returning from a European tour (on the ferry?) at the same time as Kirsty McColl's school trip. Ewan would sit down to analyse Kirsty's songs in the same forensic manner that he ran the Singer's Club, which couldn't have been easy.
