CHRISTMAS DIARIES DAY 17: CHRISTMAS CAROLS!!!

Cat takes us on a journey into the traditions of Christmas carols, whilst I decorate the Grand Salon...
It's that time of year again - CHRISTMAS AT THE CHATEAU has begun! Happy Advent!
Here is the seventeenth video in our daily Advent Calendar series. Each day will bring a different surprise - but you can expect a mixture of exuberant decorations, seasonal florals, delicious food, gift ideas, musical treats and even a little Christmas carpentry...
**If you would like to hear Cat's favourite Christmas carols, here's a link to her Spotify playlist:**

***To download this year's Lalande wrapping paper designs, based on my father's medieval paintings, the link to the shop is***:

They are available at €5 per image, or €10 for five colours.
I had hoped to have the papers printed in order to sell them ready-made, but with all of the Covid postal delays that's proved impossible. I had mine printed by Zazzle, and scaled the pattern up online so that I have both regular and large scale versions here for Christmas. You're all welcome to do the same in order to have large rolls made, or to simply print them on your home printers for very small parcels! But please only use them for private (not commercial) use.

A million thanks for today’s post! My husband of 46 years passed away not long ago. We met in seminary while both of us worked on our theology degrees. David majored in voice and I miss hearing his rich baritone voice. He would have been singing right along with you today. Through my tears, I have hit replay over and over. You have blessed me! 💕

😘Whole-heartedly agree about Kat. She's a woman of substance with hidden passion & depths. 😉Clearly, it's not good to 👩‍⚖judge a 📚book by it's hard📙cover alone. Snarky, mischief maker, rabble-rouser, and class clown at first glance. Follow that up with her being no nonsense, feet firmly planted on the ground, focused on down-to-earth practicalities & all while attacking life with gusto. 🐢 Under that tough facade, Stephanie has it right about Kat's soft inside. She is quite tender. A humble hostess who prefers to serve others on the down low. Although she obviously loves to nurture ppl through 🍲food & beverage🍵 offerings. She also takes great 😄joy in the creativity of making meals🍚. 😮 Kinda shocking, that she is a secret 🕵️‍♀️sentimental 💞: •The gentle wonder of a theological scholar who is moved by 📖 Biblical text and phraseology. •A woman equally touched by the poetry of song🎵 who also offers a pure heavenly voice raised in worship🎶. You're so right! 🔍Each & every new discovery🔎 about Kat only makes her all the more ☄fascinating☄! ~~~~~~~~~~ 🎼ps 👨‍💼Chorale directors👩‍💼 and the 🌎 world at large may 💕 swoon 💕 considerably more over 💫Sopranos, but 🤔Kat needs to keep something in mind. 🙋‍♀️Altos bring richness of depth and harmony to life🌱 in music. ✌😊🤙

My father is a clergyman and all our family were in the choirs at all our Churches over the years. I was also in the junior school choir, the county youth choir then senior school choir, Church music group. Like you Kat we would start Carol concerts and Carol Services from beginning of December and it would include an evening of a performance of Handels Messiah. Then the last three nights before Christmas Eve we would Carol Sing around the village. Christmas Eve was always really busy with an afternoon service and then the midnight communion. Christmas Day started really early as we lived in a farming village in the 1970’s so my Dad did a 7 am communion then 8 am communion. Then he’d rush home for a full English breakfast..much needed. Then we had a family service at 9.30 am and final Communion service at 11.15 am. Our Christmas would properly start about 12 o’clock ish by which time as young children we were desperate to open our presents! You have beautiful voices, sadly my voice has really gone now and I struggle to sing x

Sorry, guys. I'm enjoying this so much and I wish I was with you so I could gab and sing right along with you. I too have sung in choirs all my life. Soprano 1 My father was a tenor, played piano and was an accomplished violinist. My parents met in 1939 singing in a choir...I kid you not. Have much to say and feel crazy frustrated, so forgive me if I ramble on a bit. You three 'nerds' blend together in every way. Gorgeous sounds resound in the grand salon. CAT: I have a wonderful unforgettable Christmas memory that you've ignited. I married a very nice and handsome Brit. We honeymooned in England, Christmas 1979 to meet more members of my new English family who couldn't come to Canada for our wedding in October. On Christmas Eve we crowded into the narthex of Durham Cathedral as an added adventure to an already eventful day. Standing squished with other onlookers and disappointed we hadn't arrived earlier, I turned and beside me was a young chorister in procession who began to sing, Once in Royal David's City. Right in front of me!!!!! His sweet beautiful voice echoing into the far reaches of the Cathedral and into my heart. It was magical. At that point I had the best spot in that magnificent House. Sing on, dear ones. You made my day. Looking forward to singing with At Home Choir in January. Big hugs.🎵💖

Well, Cat made me cry on & off thru this whole video. It just was so touching the way she explained about the carols traditions. And I love hearing the carols. I haven't been to church in a very long time, but there is something so magical & spiritual about being there at Christmas. Finding out recently that I have cancer has affected me in many ways. But due to the health crisis & my treatments, I have to stay home as much as possible. My elderly mother is missing being able to attend church, as well as having all of her children, grandchildren & even great-grandchildren come to our small, rural home for Christmas this year. It breaks my heart that I can't help in some way. I would love to ring the church bell one more time at Christmas, like I used to do when I was young. I love my holidays & the traditions associated with them, but I really haven't been able to celebrate them this year, either due to the weather or being ill. And now, I just hope & pray to be able to celebrate them again. Thanks for the carols. It really helps.

We lived far from relatives so all my Christmas memories involve singing at the "children's" service then going to a party at a choir member's home and then going back to sing at midnight mass. Then we had to go back again and sing on Christmas morning. I love all those memories. I'm no longer in the choir though because my voice was only pleasant as a child, haha.
