Christians and Politics - Jeremiah 29:1-13 - Skip Heitzig

Don’t worry, I’m not preaching politics, nor am I endorsing a candidate today. I realize that both political parties go to church and that Christians have a wide variety of political notions. As a registered independent, I am aware of the flaws that exist on both sides, and so I am not taking sides today. But I want to call the body of Christ to be informed of the policies, engaged in the process, and active in the promotion of godly discourse. Furthermore, I am asking that we be united this week in prayer and fasting for this nation.
This teaching is from our series Individual Topical Messages with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Albuquerque.

    Why has the Church not power? Is it not because she has forsaken Christ and joined with Cesar, and is seeking for divine power to be exercised through politics, for the "regeneration of society"? God cannot lend himself to any such scheme. The Church will have to get out of politics before she will realize the power for which some in her communion long. {March 18, 1897, AMS 164.9}

    Actually Simeon too was in the world but not off the world. His pillars were near Aleppo, one of the busiest cities and trade routes. While his lifestyle was werid, records showed his preaching to be very relevant to the issues of the day. Even the emperor came to talk to him.

    Jesus may have appeared to be politically neutral, but he was certainly not socially neutral. Jesus was not afraid to confront, challenge, and even offend. He was not afraid to put truth above losing fans or financial support. Remember, when the public was called to choose between him and a common thief, they chose - - - Barabbas. If you speak for God, there will be times when you may have to declare support for a particular party or candidate. Some say we are fishers of men, not keepers of the aquarium, but in Genesis, one of God's first commands to his children was to "be fruitful, multiply and take dominion over the earth." Jesus reaffirmed this in Matthew 28 when he told his followers to "go into all the world and make disciples of all nations; teaching them to obey the things I (Jesus) commanded you. Those who believe and are baptized shall be saved. Those who do not believe shall be damned. And, these signs shall follow them that believe, they shall heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons. Jesus never held an altar call. He was not concerned with people saying "the magic words," - "accepting him." Jesus called his followers to lay down their lives, take up their crosses and follow him. If you think being politically neutral makes you a better Christian, think again. Salt and light are not neutral. 25 million registered Christian voters not showing up at the polls is not a testimony to our faith. It is a testimony to our apathy and confusion. James summed it up when he said, "show me your faith and I will show you my faith by my works; done in faith." Wake up! Shake up! Put on your make up! It is time to take up the shield of faith and the two-edged sword - the word of God and engage the enemy.

    Absolutely, too many so called preachers advocate a Jesus that only existed the days just before his execution and ignore the rest of his life and ministry. They tell you to lay down and let everyone walk over you, that Jesus was a peacemaker (he was over Many things) and in all things you should be too. Jesus wasn't "nice" he was rude. How rude would it be to tell a woman you have just seen that she was right she didn't have a husband and the five others weren't either !!! Can you imagine the facefull of abuse he would have received TODAY much less back then when even having more than one sexual partner (ever) was cause for shame unless you met very strict guidelines. Jesus was strong but not blatantly offensive just to be offensive (John the Baptist on the other hand seemed to be just that to the religious leaders and rightly so) and we are to have the loving heart of Christ but whipping a few bankers was not beyond his scope of work either was it !!!

    Everyone should be able to freely cast their vote on Election Day without fear of being discriminated or judged against based on their political convictions. Jesus clearly stated to give to Cesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Today’s Christian people are divided by Ignoring this principle. Maga movement is hurting the church and jeopardizes the effectiveness of preaching the gospel since the world sees politicians manipulating some churches to gain their votes and being elected to seize power and control over their political opponents. Shame on them. The Lord will judge those who used the gospel for their own benefit.

    Thank you for this instructive sermon - whilst we are instructed to be no part of Satan's world - we live in the world - just as Jesus/Isa?Yeshua did - however we vote for the theocratic kingdom and not the kingdom of men (worldly politics). Remaining neutral in worldly politics yet playing an advisory or administrative role in government - just as Daniel et al participated in. At times being educated helps to facilitate this - having studied religion, government and politics and law - it is advantageous to be wise in God's word and be informed being prayerful on behalf of all. May Yahweh bless your ministry.

    There's only one question here. WHAT WOULD JESUS DO if He was living in Our Days? Would He Vote for those people like Herod, Caiphas and Pilate? OR would He (who says My Kingdom is NOT of this world John 18:36) keep promoting and campaigning for GOD's Kingdom, that sets us its own rulers and kings NOT by human election BUT by GOD's Anointing? And so, after considering these things DO what you need to do. BUT before doing so, ASK yourself the MOST important question: would YESHUA/Jesus DO the SAME thing too?

    Knowing what happens in your country, how you give way to ungodly, He would visit your church and rebuke you for being a SECT not His Church! He gave you the power to handle the problems of this world and you hid it and buried down waiting to sit it all out. He will ask you personally that you have tipped your political system to the brink that people have to choose between Herod and Pilate. Where is THE CHURCH? That is supposed to be the blessing of all nations but in reality waits for some good-doers to settle it all, especially in politics. Politics is the key to well-being of a nation. And btw, He would vote for He is obedient to the Law, He respects the powers that are ordained by His Father

    It is my understanding as a Christian we have basic beliefs that must be paramount in whatever we do. When Christians refuse to confirm those beliefs, I think it confuses the world and makes it easy for satan to trick and confuse the lost. Among these core beliefs is that 1) the Bible is the inspired word of God and that it expresses his will for all things. 2) We believe that mankind was originally created in the image of God and only finds fulfillment in life when we are rightly related to God. All mankind sins and therefore, falls under the condemnation of God. 3) We believe that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way of salvation by the grace of God through faith in him as fully revealed in the New Testament of the Bible. 4) We believe that God and his kingdom are our first priority in all things. 5) We believe that all freedom comes from God and him only and that Christians are called to be good stewards of what God has given. We also respect the right of ALL people to reject God if they choose to as a co'-equal rieght to the choice to accept him. 6) We believe that human life begins at conception. 7) We believe that the Constitution of the United States has its roots planted in the Bible and in its original intent is the guiding set of principles for governing the free people of this country. 8) We believe that this country was founded on Christian principles and that the church of Jesus Christ should be free to involve itself in all aspects of American culture and governance. 9) We believe that morality, as defined by the Bible is profitable for everyone. There are a few more but my point here is that when Christians refuse to take a clear stand on specific issues, the church/the body of Christ is weakened. Christians have been all but silenced while our schools are suffering, candidates who hate Christians are winning and we wonder why our country is going down the tube? Christians must be salt and light.

    Has God foreordained the political system? Dose, not the scripture have the beast turn on the harlot? Did Jesus not show Pilot how God gave him the authority to kill Him? What was the state of leadership at 1 Samul chapter 8? How can we speak of the sovereignty of God and at the same time think we have the ability to influence his plan as though we know better. I will not hold myself responsible for the lawlessness and evil injustice of a crooked nation.

    Ha ha ha and there it is ! He just cited exactly how to vote. How sneaky to tell you he is not going to tell you who to vote for. This is why my relationship with God is my own. Why I love him so much and am told I can’t possibly be a good Christian if I vote a certain way or criticize what I see as false teaching or manipulation of the word. There is a whole population of quiet Christians who feel the way I do and are bullied into submission because the “ silent majority” has spoken. His talk was absolutely perfect until the end, when he subliminally endorsed his candidate.

    Ryan Morgan Maybe so, but the whole tax exempt argument is a bit misunderstood too since churches are tax exempt because of the value they provide their communities through public service - much like any other non profit organization. Whether those services are education, food pantries, after school programs, counseling, help with addictions, etc. Granted I concede that not every church serves their community as described above; however, studies have continually proven that the value churches provide to their communities are greater than any property taxes a local government might charge. Otherwise, while churches run on donations, the salaries paid out to employees (including clergy) are taxed - including any housing benefits provided the pastor.

    Perhaps you're right. But: don't you agree that sanctity of human life is important? Is it right to ignore that issue? Certainly there are other issues, and you might argue that the Democrats are stronger in those. But human life in the womb is an issue that should not be ignored.

    Roman 13, did say we are subject to government no matter the party. But when you go to church and feel people cold attitude because you don't support the political party they support, you feel pushed out. I was attending a bible study, and I'm black and the leader of the study needed me to know she thought both sides are wrong. So I said ok, but I notice, although she said both sides are wrong, the only wrong the group talked about was the wrong on the left and if I pointed out the wrong of the right, l felt the cheerful mood change. as you said the world is divided, but shouldn't the church try to remove things from the church that's causing division amongst the people? The bible tells us if your eye offends you pluck it out. The bible also says a divided house cannot stand. If the division in the church continues to be allowed to grow, isnt it going to cause the church to fall as the bible says? The church is so emotionally married to politics until it ready doesn't care about the warnings God's word provides. I never knew just how much the church was entangled with politics until now. I know many others were as shocked as I was when it started showing. Politics is an offends and that will become clear in 2024 because both sides believe the other side is going to cheat. So no matter who wins the other side is going to believe it was robbed. And that's going to result into what we have now multiplied by 100. Uncontrollable anger. I have become apolitical because I want no part in the destruction of the church or the country. I believe God has a plan for America, so I pray for her survival. I also believe we are witnessing the end of the church age, evangelicals believe this time would occur when the church was raptured up, I never believed that because the bible says jesus was coming for a church without a spot or winkle, so I knew he had to cleanse it first, maybe that's what this is.

    Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you" declares the lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ........ This Scripture is often plucked out of context. Many Pentecostal Pastor's quote this verse as a source of comfort and a promise of wealth. If we read all of Jeremiah 28 and 29 we find an old prosperity prophet, named Hahaniah, he was selling the same lie we see in today's false prophets. God killed Hananiah for that lie. We trust God for what is best for us, that is the comfort. We may not understand, but we trust God's will and plans. God's plans are aways good, even if we suffer and die. God's good, is not always our good. And our future is always good, the eternal waits. Jeremiah wrote 29:11 to God's chosen people who were slaves. And, they were not going to return to there land for 70 years. In 29:5-7 Jeremiah tells them to move on with there lives as slaves. And to work hard for these Babylon Masters...So tell me, in context, was God giving Judah an easy life? And did it look fair to Judah? No...They preferred to hear Hananiah's lies, just like today's Apostate Church. The Apostles all suffered, and all died horrendous deaths, to God this was his plan and good. Job's suffering was God's plan. The early Christians died in coliseum's, yet to God this was Good. God saw the death of his Son as Good...Are you different? You chase God's favor? To be free of sickness, poverty and heartache? The only way this prosperity gospel can work, is to elevate the powers both of man and the demonic world, and then also weaken the power of God...Herein, is the lie and arrogance, you are deceived little gods. It is to your peril. Faith is not a power source. It is trusting God even in our suffering...What does God say about playing god? Matthew 7: 21-23

    Hi. When Jesus said the devil was the god of this sytem of things, was that only binding pre reserection? If not, then R U saying The U.S. is the exception to the rule? Where does being in world cross over to being OF the world? my hunch is that yes, o.t, you had the law- a theoracy, but Jesus did awsy with the law. If not, christianity would be more overtly pilitical- like Islam. By comparision, theres a christian anarchist element. The Christian community constitute an implicit pokitical force by unity of folkowing Christ and being seperate from the world. Yes too, cearar helps , so, unlike Anarchists persay, Christians will pay their taxes, obay laws( asuming they dont interfere withh Gods law) etc. Other than that, compromise is the result. Peace
