I wanted any republican besides Trump to win the Republican nomination for president but when he won I thought he did a very honorable job. I've been a Christian for almost 40 years and I believe I am forgiven in Christ alone but I have sinned shamefully in some seasons and I am not going to cast stones especially where we live in the most immoral country on planet earth. I pray for President Trump and his family and so does my wife.

I appreciate the chemotherapy metaphor. It is important to be honest about Trump. His policies are good, but his character is sorely lacking. Pretending he is a righteous man is just foolish.

The truth lost in the "Trump has bad character" theme is recovered when scrutiny into the lives of recent presidents occurs. Trump has nothing on Clinton, Kennedy, Johnson, etc.

Donald Trump as the drugs used to treat cancer in chemotherapy . . . So you're saying he's a good kind of toxic. Are you certain Trump's the right kind of poison? There are lots of toxic substances out there. Lots. Are you positive that Trump's toxicity is just what the Doctor ordered? Are you certain that, when the cancer is eliminated (assuming Trump IS the right treatment), that the chemotherapy will end? Or will the toxic drug decide that he should continue beyond the prescribed course of treatment? Or maybe this toxic Trump drug has an addictive quality. Maybe some people will say, "This drug is making me feel powerful; let's keep taking this toxic drug!”

I really like the idea of seeing Trump as a clown, in a neutral sense. The clown is part of the edge of the world, the red light districts so to speak (what else is Hollywood then the edge of the world). They have no loyalties and maybe no morals (though a true archetypal clown doesn't exist because everyone worships something). Because they're on the edge, they can see the center for what it is if they're honest. The clown uses comedy to criticize the king, and the king hates it if they're a tyrant, they want to cut the jesters head off. Sometimes the clown goes overboard, but they're a clown. To me he did his job and we need not feel guilty about the things he's done, nor feel the need to defend a clown. A clown king is also a sign of the times, and arguably he accelerated things into what was already inevitable.

It is a situation requiring discretion and discernment to engage the culture without being catechized by it. Unfortunately we as a church have been rather poor at this. It seems that we have only allowed for the Benedict option or the Cult of the Orange Calf. One problem that has led us this direction is the idolatry of the state where we equate the source of our cultural salvation with control (or at least a seat at the table) in the government rather than engaging the actual culture. This is statism pure and simple whether from the left or the right. As a response to this some have advocated complete withdrawal. It may be that we are called to emulate the Irish monks who preserved the literature and culture of western civilization through cloister but I don't think we are quite there yet. It is quite possible that our culture is already dead and just experiencing the involuntary twitching of the rabbit whose heart has been obliterated by the bullet of rebellion. That said if there is any hope of restoration it must be through the inside out transformation of culture through reformation and revival rather than imposition through political power.

Doug, Glenn Beck is promoting moving to small town and grouping up. How about Matthew 28 in concern to Jesus owning it all and sharing His word. Not sure if Glenn gets the Holy Spirit as our Helper/ Advocate. Good to probably speak on subject.

Love Rod Dreher! Live Not By Lies is full of wisdom. I appreciate some of what Doug has to say, but his crassness is absurd sometimes. His daughter is similar. You have to be tough, but some of the comments they make are beyond forgiveness. Just read Merkle's book Eve in Exile. She needs to apologize to those in the agrarian industry, especially diary farmers or homesteaders who milk cows. Read the book and you'll know what I'm talking about. Dreher is awesome! Full of wisdom in how history repeats itself and how to stand up to totalitarianism and bring up a family in the Lord during totalitarianism. Maybe Doug is just jealous. :) (I can be crass too.)

This would be true if everyone could see who trump really is, but they honestly cannot. Many people I know, including men in leadership at mission boards seriously think Trump is an honorable man, even after his actions on January 6, 2021.

I agree in that I've seen way too many people at my church seemingly sold out to Trump. I voted for him both times knowing what I was probably going to get. Also I disagree completely with the idea that he had anything to do with the violence that happened on the 6th. That's just our media's handwringing narrative. We had leaders apologizing for, capitulating to, and even encouraging violent antifa and BLM activists for over 6 months with the media running cover. Trump specifically says to be peaceful and a chunk of people got too forceful for a day, and now it'd the end of democracy as we know it (actually I wish that were true sometimes).
