Christian Metz's Semiotic Film Theory

Фильм және анимация

This video provides an introduction to the semiotic film theory of Christian Metz as it is outlined in his book Film Language: A Semiotics of the Cinema. The video primarily discusses the chapter "Some Points in the Semiotics of the Cinema" and secondarily discusses the chapter "The Cinema: Language or Language System."
Topics include the influence of Ferdinand de Saussure's structural linguistics as laid out in his Course in General Linguistics, the distinction between signifier and signified, the distinction between language (langage) and language system (langue), the distinction between denotation and connotation, and the way that Soviet Montage theorists analogized film to language.

Thank you sooo much! Great explanation, bits of de Saussure and actual examples of Metz words. Couldn't ask for more to pass my Semiotics subject for a postgraduate in Visual arts (Argentina). I chose Matthias Muller's Home Stories short film and lacked the words to use in my analysis. :)

Hey, do you think you’ll ever talk about Kawin’s mindscreen? I just recently read the book, but some more contemporary examples of its usefulness would be great to see.

hmm interesting. I've never read that book and am only marginally familiar with Bruce Kawin. Likely not something that I'll cover any time soon given that I don't think it's something often assigned in film studies (or at least this is my assumption).

@@filmandmediastudieschannel Ah, I imagine you’re right, though I do recommend giving it a read. It’s a fun little book about the idea of 1st person film, whether that be through the perspective of the characters or even the film itself (as in the film as a self conscious entity).
