No, it wouldn't be nearly as good. One of the strengths of this cover version is its raw, gritty and imperfect nature. It's totally heartfelt, sincere, and 100% genuine. The studio version would likely be too polished, clean and so-called perfect. What I wish, instead, was that they would either somehow have already had this version serendipitously recorded, or that he would do another live version of it that would be recorded and released. Live is definitely the way to go, with Chris and this cover. Chris's biggest strength is his live performances. That's where he shines the most. And that's the mark of a truly great singer and musician.

Laura Heath I would say that is correct there's so many genres wrapped up and Chris Stapleton so just say and label him country would be inaccurate but having known the history of music country music gets its roots from Blues but Chris Stapleton is a mix of a lot of things and he can play and sing almost any genre but as you said they do like to label people in stick them in a certain box I guess for marketing reasons but he is a true definition of a musician and singer

Carson Thompson he’s just an authentically blues driven artist, it’s not necessarily country. People just feel more comfortable when they can stick you in a box and slap a label on you. He’s bigger than that one genre.

Stapleton is a beast. This just shows utter respect for Prince. Prince wrote songs that made you think and feel and Chris sang it. I felt it in my bones
Chris Cornell and now this are my best renditions of this song I ever heard

Ladies and gentlemen nothing compares to Chris Stapleton. Period!!!!
I'm a massive Prince fan, and his live-recording of this song with Rosie Gaines is by far, my favorite piece of music. But then here comes Chris Stapleton with a STUNNER of a tribute. My GOD...his voice in those opening bars...unreal. Literally moves my soul. Prince would have been proud. THAT is how you cover a classic and honor a talent so huge, it's stratospheric...So many, many props to him.

I have recently found Chris Stapleton. He moves my soul. He must have known alot of hurt to perform like this. Im thankful to enjoy his music, as his music tightens my chest my heart flutters and i clutch my throat in the sheer beauty and tormet.
there was this time I walked into a random bar. Maybe 4, 5 people in there. After a while, I took out my cell and sent "Tennesse Whiskey" to the house jukebox, just so I could chill and enjoy my beer. This couple came out of nowhere (apparently, to me) and started slow-dancing, getting into the groove. I'm hard-pressed to find a moment in my life when I was happier than that to see that happen.
Normally I loathe those that record all throughout every show... but this is certainly a gem! Thank you!
ran across this when prince passed over to the other side. now i am a total chris fan. i hope he records this.
As someone who has been in bands for a long time, that bass player just learned that song as he played it. That makes this all the more special. My favorite thing when I see a band live is when they do unexpected (to them) performances and everybody just follows along. True talent.
