Chris Rea's "The Road to Hell" is a commentary on modern life and its stresses. Released in 1989, the song paints a bleak picture of a world dominated by consumerism, environmental destruction, and societal decay. Rea uses the metaphor of a road to convey a sense of entrapment and inevitable decline, capturing the feeling of being caught in an inescapable cycle of modern existence. The song's haunting melody and somber lyrics reflect a sense of disillusionment and foreboding about the direction in which society is heading. The song’s ability to resonate with listeners decades after its release is a testament to its profound impact and Rea’s artistry.

There is a lot of Truth in all his songs - some are happy, some are sad (or very sad)., some are bittersweet. This is why they are beautiful. "Beauty is truth, truth beauty" said John Keats. The Polish romantic C.K. Norwid said :" Hell is inability to love" . We all probably don't know yet how talented and precious Chris Rea is. Chris - lots of love from Poland!

Timeless, our grand kids will be blown away in the future, i have no doubt.

There's not a singly syllable of any of hing songs I wouldn't know by heart - forwards and backwards. Because of him I started playing guitar, because of him I started to sing. Still today I listen to his music for hours, every single day. At work, at home, when I go to bed. I just noticed I even use the same guitar belt :-D Having missed his last tour makes me sad. And yet adopted the attitude that when you face your own mortality, you appreciate life more. That I know is very true as I’ve battled 2 lots of cancer and 2 more scares. He had a unique voice and what a guitarist🎸 he was absolutely a master at it. Road to hell was for me his best song ever . Love all the versions here in you tube. CR has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life, since his On the Beach 1986 album, which was on in the car as we drove from Northern Ireland to Berlin in 1989, not knowing that we would be in that great city when the Wall came down later the same year. Great music, great lyrics, great musician, great man...

I’ve never met Chris Rea. But we both grew up at the same time in the 60s (I am 4 years his senior) in Middlesbrough. I would occasionally have coffee in his parents café. I often think when I hear this song, if he was inspired by the A19 to Middlesbrough when he travelled it on his way home to visit his family.

He played a gig in Montréal quite a ways back. He went to New York and Toronto also. That was it for his tour. I still remember he opened with “Nothing to Fear” and he played for 50 minutes. We were all in shock.
