i was partying around a campfire last summer with my uncles. we were all drunk and being merry. then one of my uncles put on this song, and we all got silent and just listened. No one said a word for the whole song. it is the best memory we have of that night

I believe the only reason Chris isn’t a household name in country is because he refused to play the music industry game. He doesn’t seem like a guy who will compromise on anything, which is why he is who he is.

For sure. This is my favorite, my #1 country music guy. He won't compromise for anyone. That's a real country boy. It's ashamed we don't have more artist like him. They could shut down main stream. But of course it's hard to fill those shoes.

Couldn't agree more. I've been lucky enough to see him a few times live in Austin. Small venues, one was like 20 people! It rocked. The reality is country music is defined by the garbage they play on your local FM dial.

Even the real deal has to pay the bills and eat. If you make music for a living, you can't just give it away. Make sure to buy a CD and attend a show. The only way to keep real music alive is to feed it.

This is truly one of the most haunting love songs I've ever heard. To me, you can feel the pain he is feeling at her loss in every syllable sung. Chris is a true talent and wonderful to hear. (As I too have worn out most songs--thing this one went first!)
It's a shame Chris Knights music is unknown and not mainstream, he is a great singer, songwriter, but that's not what plays nowadays, Rest In Peace country music!! All that comes out of Nashville is a bunch of half ass pop star wannabes, they should be ashamed!!!
Best artist ever, hands down. It's ashame he isn't in the radio but I understand why. I'm grateful for artist like him. Hell yeah. Taking a shot for you chris.

Mr. Knight is a master of that rare art form where people use songs to tell a story. This one and "Down the River" in particular just send chills throughout my body for the authenticity and beauty in them. Been a fan for about 15 years and it has never been dull. I agree---I tend to prefer him doing his songs purely acoustic--maybe just one or two other players backing him up like the dude playing the mandolin n the video. But then again--see him with a full electric back up band---like I did one time at the Taft Theater down in the basement ball room-----he can totally rock out and kick ass!! I do prefer this acoustic version over the studio one on the album. I also like House and 90 acres done acoustic too.

Lyrics: Been snowin all day when I got home The fire was out the cabin was cold And I poured some stale coffee from the pot The longer I waited the snow got higher Had to split some wood and build a fire If she told me she’d be gone I forgot I’d seen it snow that hard before I couldn’t see the cabin from the stable door And that mare she always rode was in the stall The law couldn’t come till the weather broke My heart was poundin in my throat And I searched and called her name till it was raw I never should have brought her here Livin’s rough this time of year Tryin to keep food and fire till winters done Sometimes she'd gaze across the plains With a look that I couldn’t name And I’d wonder if she'd stay till springtime comes I found her on the first warm day The rain had washed the snow away Gone for wood and lost her way back home And I ain’t the kind believes in ghosts But some nights I get pretty close When the North Dakota winter moans When the North Dakota winter moans

Excellent song. It captures the brutality of the cold in North Dakota at times. Our grandparents and great-grandparents were hearty stock. There is no place more beautiful in the spring, summer and fall but winter is something else.

He never mentioned fireball whiskey once in this song... How can I get my ol lady to shake her sugar shaker to this stuff!!! The real question is how have I been listing to country music the last 35 years and only heard this dude recently... Go's to show how fake the music industry has become and how programmed they have most of the publics minds.... Example... Lick em like a lollipop was a number one song and this one has never been heard outside of diehard fans of good music searching
Found this because of Austin Lunn (Panopticon) and his cover. I love both versions! Such a great song
Had more good times than bad in north dakota, can't say the same for most places I've lived. Best summer weather ever. If I owned land there I'd probably never left.
"And I ain’t the kind believes in ghosts But some nights I get pretty close When the North Dakota winter moans When the North Dakota winter moans" Beautiful
Found this by pure accident. Best damn accident I've had in a long time. The mandolin adds somethin I can't quite describe. The pain in his voice makes it seem like the tellin of a true tale. Makes me wanna pull deep on a bottle of Beam. Absolutely a great song!
Closed my eyes and imagined this song. Gave me the chills. Absolutely incredible
As a lifelong North Dakotan, this song is perfect on a harsh winter night, blizzard or just plain cold. It's not winter, but it's storming out there right now.
wow! We got married in Montana and our first child was born in Williston ND. all those memories come rushing back when I heard this song. Damn, what a song!
Beautiful song, I'm from Belcourt North Dakota, and the Winters are to be feared here, I had 3 cousins that froze to death, and this song reminds me of them. I love Chris Knights songs.
God Damn this song is amazing!
Proud to be born and raised in North Dakota and still live here. I love the land. You can feel the power odother nature in the winters. We still have people taken from us by the harsh winters. Beautifuly harsh and such a true song!

Only for the young, strong, and smart and the old if you want to die quick and free.
It takes a special kind of storyteller to convey such a deep, emotional message as this. You can feel the raw, emotional sentiment connect deep into your soul. Funny how two instruments and a true vocal inflection can enter your ear, and paint such a vivid landscape.
His voice sounds like an old sergeant major I had in the army. He would sing when we were on patrols and when he thought no one was listening. Tough and poignant all in one. The hard-plucking strings go with the mood and the lyrics. And very apropos for the environment today, not just North Dakota, but all the nation, "trying to keep fire and food..." We've all got ghosts, too. Keep on, Mr. Knight
I saw Chris in Newcastle in the North East of England. It was like an Alien had landed. He broke our hearts. I suppose hard cold industrial towns are all the same really. I hope I see him again. I'll be watching.

One thing I always notice about Chris is that he goes somewhere else when hes singing his music. The man is one hell of a story teller.

This is my favorite version.
It's always refreshing to hear music like this. Chris Knight is one of the few musicians in today's music business that not only sounds great on the album, but might actually sound better live. There's none of the pre-packaged, over-produced garbage that floods today's music business. Music from Knight, and a few others like him have helped me through a rough year in my own life. Thanks Chris, keep on producing stuff like this and I'll keep on buying it and spreading the word about it.
Loving this music and style
There is no better storyteller than this guy! He has taken his Prine/Earle/et al, influences and perhaps made something greater than the sum of their parts. I first stumbled onto him via x-country radio on XM (thanks Jessie Scott) which, sadly, was lost due to the XM-Sirius merger. For those who haven't heard much Chris Knight, start with The Trailer Tapes. That's my number one album cut in the last twenty years.
Been listening to Chris since I first heard him on the Mountain Stage radio broadcast over five years ago. I had not purchased a CD in years at that point but the very next day I ran out on my lunch break and bought a copy of Enough Rope.
The song that gets me through the day.

He has always had that knack of putting you in the stories he writes and sings about.
Chris Knight is the greatest secret country. His lyrics are haunting and put you right there!

I love Chris Knight. I have for years. I found him in a particularly dark time in my life and he gave me so much comfort and joy. Funny how even just one song can make life worth living. :)
I'm so hooked can't stop listening to his music. My good friend that passed away had " Go on Home" played at his funeral. Never heard of CK before that. I'm trying to learn all his songs
Outstanding! Been a Chris Knight fan for most of a decade and I loved that.
Awesome! Real country music. You won't find country music like this on main stream pop country music that seems to all sound the same.
Seen him live twice now at Majestic Theatre in Dallas. He just keeps getting better and better the older he gets. Chris really got me into writing songs with being real and clever. In my opinion, he’s the best songwriter to ever put pen to paper. We’re lucky to have real talent like this and are fortunate that Music Fog records such amazing renditions.
Blows away the Nashville Pop bull$hit!
I can't believe this has been out there for 9 years and I didn't see it until now it came at the right time for sure. I have followed this guy for along time. Thanks man!!!!
He is huge in my way of thinking. We've seen him all over the country and he just gets better with time. He knows what and where I come from.
This man is an unrecognized talent---he has a great songbook. This is one incredible version of this terribly bittersweet song....
Why isn't he famous?!?!? Seriously, he's waaayyyyyy more talented than a lot of these so called "musicians" now a days.
You know its a good song when you can see it play out like a movie in your head. You can "feel" it. Not one for crowds of people but I will go see him if he ever plays near here.
Dude, you won't be disappointed! I just saw him in Nebraska and it was the BEST show I've ever seen.
He is just unreal awesome. I long to be the writer that this man is. He is the reason that I've been pounding the pen to the paper for 18 years now. I got to meet him and tell him how much he inspired me as he was the reason that I started writing. He was so humbled by it and encouraged me. That meant alot.
He is the real deal keep up the great singing and songwriting CHRIS!!!!
