Chris Broussard - This Series is Luka Doncic's 'First Fork in the Road' Moment

Спорт

THE ODD COUPLE-Chris Broussard and Rob Parker discuss what to make of Luka Doncic up to this point. He's been a great player but still hasn't made it any closer to going very deep in the playoffs. With the series tied between the Dallas Mavericks and OKC Thunder, Chris and Rob wonder how he'll be looked at if he can't get past OKC.

Luka needs to improve his conditioning and his ability to play off-ball. His lack of conditioning is why he’s usually worn down or injured at the end of the season. He won’t win the chip until he improves these two things.

I'm noticing how people are now criticizing Luka for complaining too much during games, but they rarely if ever keep that same energy for another player who's been a face of the league for nearly two decades. Y'all are finally speaking truth to power on why so many basketball fans are turned off by today's product - too much flopping and too much whining instead of playing basketball. IT's an epidemic across the league. Luka will need to take his game to the next level. He needs to get in better shape and focus more on doing the little things instead of trying to do everything. I feel like once he does that, he'll truly unlock his potential. He's not the same athlete as LeBron or Giannis and he doesn't have Jokic's size. It'll be interesting to see how the Mavs respond.

The 2 seasons Luka didn’t make the playoffs they didn’t “look” strong enough to do anything and Cuban tanked the season for a damn pick when a lot of top picks are not what is advertised. That worked this past year but not his rookie season. It’s about time Cuban got smacked around by the media about his choices not just passing comments like letting Nash walk, letting Brunson walk, losing Chandler after title run (could’ve kept him). In 25 years he’s had 2 fantastic picks that he himself has said he thought they’d be good but not all time great. In draft and trades he is a big shot taker not a big shot maker MOST of the time. (Most of the time for you trolls looking to post a list of the what about’s) He tanked Luka’s rookie season to try to get a pick back which they didn’t. Swung for the fence with KP with picks lost on an injured big man that to date has been severely injury prone. The tanking last year worked out well but that’s not historically what Cuban has been known for. It’s not just the previous GM’s fault. He’ll take credit for home runs so he’s gotta take it for all the whiffs. You know Cuban’s tell? Like a poker tell when he’s full of ish talking out his *ss? When he pushes back in his chair swaying side to side with that huge ish eating grin on his face you should question everything coming from his mouth. It’s hard to be a Mavs fan sometimes with him being owner. He was allowing a sports gambler to dictate lineups depending on some Money Ball scheme. That’s just nuts. Basketball isn’t baseball. Dirk shoulda been a contender more and Luka as well to this point. Fact is Luka has carried this team on his back since he got here. Had the front office and Cuban been better team builders before this past year and this year we could’ve done more. That kid from Indiana became a starter at GSW and we coulda picked him up. Cuban is huge Indiana backer and alum. You always hear outside players saying how great an owner Cuban is and how great he treats his players yet none of the big fish ever want to come here till Kyrie. And Kyrie is here because of Kidd and Luka and having history with Nico. It’s not because Cuban is a great anything. The media needs to spread around the vitriol to the decision makers as much as the players. Till the trade this year nobody thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the center position to a big body. Why? Lively is a true center but needs to pack on some muscle which could take a couple years. But I love Lively, not dumping on him at all just a little skinny and the 1,2 punch with Gaff always having a big on the floor is a big deal. That’s Nico’s work but Cube will for sure take credit. KP wasn’t a “big body” either and wasn’t utilized well. Rant over.

It's just a damn shame he's so badly injured. His knees are literally bleeding during games and everyone can see he has a hard time getting up and down the court. The Mavs were onto something special after the trade deadline, finished strong, getting the 5th seed after being in the play-ins territory for a while, and then Luka gets injured against the Clippers and he hasn't been the same since. You can see it in his post-game interviews, he looks exhausted and in pain. Now, for the people who say he isn't in great shape. During the regular season he averaged really high minutes per game and wasn't gassed in the 4th quarter any more, so he definitely took his conditioning seriously and it paid off. But now he just doesn't have a chance to really rest and heal, because he has to play every few days, so the inflammation in his knees keeps coming back, not to mention his knee was sprained as well. So his numbers took a dip. his efficiency is poor, even though he still gets you high rebounds and assists, and some steals as well. He finished top 10 in steals and was very high in defensive rating during the regular season. He is trying his best, so it's just a damn shame he isn't as healthy as he was during the regular season, but that's just how sports are sometimes. Sometimes the universe just says no.

For me Luka's conditioning has always been an issue. Now the team has enough pieces to pretty much cover that problem. Plus Coach has them playing defense. All Luka really needs to do now is stop "whining to the refs" and just ball. Despite the whining - Dallas should win the chip. Just an opinion.

Has nothing to do with his Knowledge of the game and his Want too. He's got a billion times more "want to" than jokic and a billion times more Knowledge of the game. Offensively, Luka plays in the post routinely, he uses skip passes and full court passes a lot more than Harden, he's not as athletic as a prime Harden so he manipulates tempo on his drives to get defenders jumping early, Harden is a much better free throw shooter and foul baiter. Defensively he's bigger than harden so he offers more resistance on size alone. Plus he's been taking more pride on that end recently to the point where he's a positive on that end. They can put up similar statlines but their games aren't actually that similar which is why they have vastly different playoff resumes especially when you consider the free throw side of things

Hes been supremely efficient all season up until the playoffs where its obvious hes playing through injuries. But hes shown hes a much better defender than Harden was and he routinely improves in the playoffs whereas Harden routinely shrinks. And you didnt even mention his value as a rebounder and playmaker which is what truly sets him apart from most guards.

In fact, Luka goes into his crying act, the second he misses a shot, after the opening tipoff.
