The best way to get good at this chord tone soloing is:
1.) Practice playing over different chord progressions
2.) Practice getting to the point where the chord tones "light up" to you as the chords are changing
That is exactly why I teach these concepts from my website using what is known as "moving video backing tracks". There are hundreds of these moving backing track videos, which can be played at slower speeds available on Zombie Guitar. Check out the demo video here (namely the part about "moving video backing tracks"):

Hey, Brian. Great lesson. Thank you. By the way, if you are making a living playing music, by definition, you are indeed a professional. When you started playing your guitar to illustrate the lesson, it is really clear that you know what you are talking about. But there wasn't any showboating.that can sometimes gets students lost. Thanks for your humility. It makes for a really enjoyable lesson.
Man, this chord tone series and the caged system has lit a fire under me, after a couple years of running up and down scales, I'm excited again about playing.
69 people still stuck in pentatonic scale
who else could come close
This is by far one of the best lessons I found on KZread if you want to learn to improvise. If you have a basic understanding of caged and know your pentatonic scales, this is an awesome eye opener! Thanks man!
Very good lesson
Very good lesson
Awesome!!!!!!!
I wish your chord shapes had the note syllables to it on the scale so I know what note I am targeting!?
Knowing what pentatonic boxes that overlay over the right CAGED forms is very helpful without playing the chord shapes, but just keep in mind the triads within to focus on.
Well said Brian, you’re the first person I heard say” know the rules first before you break them” you can’t break them without knowing the rules successfully first!
Finally a teacher who actually knows what he is talking about. Thanks Brian great lesson.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is EXACTLY what my next step needs to be. You are a godsend and a GREAT instructor!!. Happy new year!

I've been playing guitar for quite a long time, and this is honestly one of the best videos explaining chord tone soloing that I have ever come across, thanks Brain! Already applying this to my improv!
Really great video. I absolutely agree with the comment bellow. You are not just a talented player but a gifted teacher as well. Keep the music flowing and the lessons comming. Thank you
Hi Brian, excellent lesson. Thank you! An amazing amount of clarification here with regards to linking pentatonic, diatonic and chord tones. Staying in the 1st position of the pentatonic really did help as I could see the underlying shapes of the chords. Really helpful!
