Chord progressions: what you need to know

This is one of those foundational, need-to-know music concepts that you cannot avoid if you want to learn to make music. Chord progressions: they are the abstract backbone behind all music, and they are the #1 thing that determine the emotional impact of your music.
How does it work, you ask? Let's time travel back in time and let 2021 Oscar explain...

Your verbal skills are seriously impressive. You, sir, are a natural born teacher. The way you said that the chord progression is an abstract structure which sits behind the music... Dude. Goosebumps. This level of abstract thinking and verbalization of such is sadly exceedingly rare in teachers of any sort.

There’s a lot of cool stuff with production I could accomplish if I had the instrumental skill, or the instruments in general. Sometimes we gotta think outside the box 😅 wish you and everybody luck on this wild rode

I am just starting with music production and a big problem is being so overwhelmed with everything. You have to learn the DAW, chords, melodies, your style of music and so an and so on... watching all these youtube videos kinda makes it worse than better. Sorry, just had to vent that out, because i am just a newbie. You are doing a great job with your videos

Greetings, I can say that your videos give very important tips to people who love this job, it helps a lot, thank you for that. I find it difficult to create FULL CHORD progressions - bassline, especially for projects such as Re-edit - Remix, so that our friends who do not have a musical education like me can benefit, I can't solve the math. Lack of basic musical knowledge (like NOTE INFORMATION) reduces motivation in general, what would your suggestions be? It seems like it's easier to create a new - original track, Kind regards

I don't think sine waves are the best timbre for testing chord progressions. You need harmonics to get the full emotional effect. Sawtooth waves are possibly overdoing it, but sawtooths filtered with a gentle lowpass work well. In my opinion, a major chord played with lowpassed sawtooths sounds much happier than the same chord played with sine waves, and it's still simple enough to avoid distracting you with questions of sound design.
