Chord Looper (Genos)

Hiya again. In the October/November edition of Yamaha Club Magazine I've been looking again at the Chord Looper feature - with two workshops on different ways of using it.
The first shows how, having recorded some 'tricky' chords for the middle section of the song at a slow tempo, the keyboard then takes over the playing of the chords (at the correct speed) during performance. This frees up your left hand to use the controls on the keyboard's panel (in this case the joystick). This video demonstrates the finished product.
The second workshop, played in a semi-theatre organ style, explains how you can use the Chord Looper to take over the triggering of the accompaniment chords whilst leaving your left hand free to play a countermelody part live on the keyboard. The simple melody/chord arrangement is published in the Easy Keyboard Library - Great Songwriters music book. The left hand countermelody part is published in the magazine. As before, the video shows the finished product.
The step-by-step guides to putting both these illustrations together is published in the October/November 2021 magazine - and free copies of the Chord Looper and registrations used are available to magazine subscribers.
Thanks for listening. All the best - Glyn :-)

Yes, it's a really useful feature. It gives you the benefit of sequencing the chords - but still gives you control over the section changes (Main A,B,C,D) and breaks, fill-ins etc in real time. See you in a couple of weeks :-)

Just a short one this time :-) I found this really difficult to do (because I kept recording the audio but forgetting to switch the camera on!).

Normally I'd use the Chord Looper for just one section of a song (as in Girl From Ipanema demonstrated). If recording chords for the entire song I'd probably use the Song Record feature instead.

Is it possible to use this feature to record Gershwin's Rhythm Changes?

  • @GlynMadden

That's a good question... but the answer is that I don't know. If I was working on something with complex time signature changes I'd sequence it on the pc rather than using Chord Looper. Rhythm/style/tempo changes will work but I suspect that it would be hard to record time signature changes (which is what I think you're after) because it has to be done live. The beauty of the Chord Looper is its simplicity - and this would be pushing it a bit.

@@GlynMadden Nope. I'm after something else. Basically, I'm asking to see if it's possible to record the chord progession to I've Got Rhythm on this.

@@GreenBoy9000 Yes, I would think so if the arrangement is one of the popular straight forward 4/4 swing variety.
