Chopping Corn in the Snow | 768 hp NEW HOLLAND FR850 Forage Cruiser
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video viewers spend time out in the field with a New Holland FR850 Forage Cruiser chopping corn in the snow. Not every day is sunny one the farm and this 768 hp forage harvester is pushing through the snow and mud to make sure the farm's dairy heard has enough feed to last an entire year.

Thank you for watching. It is fun to film and share Farming year round.
As a Farmer myself and who grows corn regularly, I can feel the frustration of the owners in the video, Im sure they wanted to harvest with a combine for the grain only but time catched up and they ended up chopping the corn if not the whole crop would go to waste in a heavier snow storm. Well that is my guess. Hope they get a better following year.
Thanks for something big, blue and yellow, really special with the snow

Thanks again B T P , great vid. New Holland has always put there name o some tough farm equipment.
You can hear that big silage chopper motor lug down in tough spots, then recover and pull back up to revs. What a machine! You have to hand it to those wagon drivers keeping up with the silage stream while trying to see out those snowy cab windows. Good Job!

This video brings back way to many memories of my fall custom chopping 😖 I will say the 6850 did look pretty sharp in the snow but was no fun cleaning up when I was done. Snow and mud make a chopper a real mess real fast.
Sadly this is a reality for a lot of Wisconsin farmers this year. A tough end to a tough year. It’s hard to call this stuff silage, it’s more like corn fodder with ground Cobb mixed in. Pretty cool to see corn chopping in the snow, I know I’ve never seen that before. Thanks for the video

They may have to run some kind of molasses supplement with the silage to increase the palatability. I did that in a year that alfalfa hay was very short. Used a lot of ground wheat straw with a molasses based protein supplement, a reduced amount of ground alfalfa hay and corn silage and the cows lapped it up like candy. Used up the straw and didn't have to buy hay. I wasn't dairy though, had stock cows. Great NH chopper in the video, gets a lot done!

Ah, the memories of doing field work in the cold, snowy Wisconsin weather. Spent many days picking corn in January when it was -20F (not windchill!) because we had to wait for the water & mud under the ice which the snow insulated. Those cornstalks kinda "exploded" when you hit them with the New Idea picker points and alot of trash went thru the machine.

Farming is not for sissies. I love the farmers who defy markets and weather to keep this the most productive, best fed, healthiest nation in the history of mankind. If Americans are hungry the rest of the damned world will be starving to death. Never underestimate real Americans and their resolve, especially American Farmers. They are the best!
How many times a day are the knives sharpened. Damn that's got to be seriously dry hard material. Greetings from England

We did this late chopping one year. Not necessarily good feed for dairy cows. No protein or nutrition in the stalk. Was this put in bunker or upright silo?

Is there much food value left when the corn is that dry? Just curious.

Our silage guys run a pair of Penta's and this year when they pulled into the feed yard my neighbor was adamant that they had broken their back axles......he couldn't wrap his head around tri-axles with rear-steer, lol. We got to minus 43c already this month.

It’s been a tough year across this entire country weatherwise we got our combine buried on muck land The day before Thanksgiving it took two days and a lot of big equipment to get it out my wife took a video of it kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5Osq7ujm9WsitY.html
So does the silage lose any nutritional value when they chop it that late, after it’s started to dry down?

I would think that corn would be too dry for silage....????
I don't understand how you are able to make silage that will ferment when it's that dry. I grew up on a dairy farm and we had a real mess one year when we chopped corn late. It molded instead of fermenting, even in an upright silo.
@bigtractorpower
4 жыл бұрын
It’s not ideal but I guess it provides some feed rather none.
Seems to be very dry för silage

It is but there is no choice. The fall stayed too wet until now to chop it.
It's way to dry to use as silage

You want corn silage to be high in moisture. Normally peak time is at 65% moisture. Unfortunately this corn field has dried out but it will still make feed.
