​@@CardboardSliverI didn't pause the game. But I did sit there and shock and almost got shot down. Is almost like an autopilot reflex got me out of the last missile that would have got me... Never before had a video game gotten me to cry over the loss of a virtual friend. That's why this game will always hold a special place in my heart.

As a military aviator, I know how it is to lose a comrade. As a human, I know how it is to lose a friend.

I didn't salute. I just cried. Cried a blood thirsty war cry as I slaughtered EVERY SINGLE STINKING YUKE OUT OF THE SKIES!! I cried tears of pain after that. I guess I get a little over-attached with my game characters :/

I like to imagine that the enemies get a small gloat of victory for finally downing a "demon" and that the whole squadron is is just flying slowly in awe, and looking at Chopper's wreckage. Thunderhead cues in that there are more enemies to shoot down, and the planes just get taken over, the engine scream nothing but afterburners and Wardogs planes yank so hard to reengage they nearly tear the wings off. And the Yukes get absolutely slaughtered.

This game really gives you a close relationship with your wingmen. This truly was the saddest moment I'm video game history. I seriously hope they eventually do a fully remastered HD remake of all of the former ace combats. Thus game series is no.1 in my book.

The crying and pain that the other characters feel, the rage of losing a loved one, the completeness of the retribution you inflict on your enemy, paint a such a real picture of war and loss

I love how you can hear all of the pilots choking up while icing fools.

When they do the missing man formation at end, it just hits me deep. Motormouth was the best wingman, RIP Chopper.

The next mission I shut off the game because it was sad without listening to his constant quips, it was way to quiet

this is why I believe this is the best game ever made... perfect execution... it knows how to draw you in... it's a perfect story.. I've played this countless times and this part still makes me cry...

12 years ago..... first he was an annoying character, than i realize how much he mean to me later on after all this year this scene still make me tears, it is the the mission i that i was totally in panic, run out missile run out everything and than I retry so hard and even went through ace difficulty and s rank just to hope there is alternative ending..... damn you chopper u chatter box u are dearly miss.

The silence, the soundtrack immediately stops, Grimm grunting in anger, i like to think it's Blaze sobbing in the cockpit, mourning the death of his closest friend, that he would sit and listen to Puddle of Mudd all day long, then, he revealed himself as a demon, and he made rain death upon land and his enemies.

When chopper died I started to cry and my uncle was in my room and started laughing and said it was just a videogame I told him to shut up It's not just a video game TT_TT

My friends came over to my place to hang out and we were taking turns to play AC5 which we still had no idea Chopper died. When he died, all eight of us watched the screen silently... no one at a chip, no one took a sip. Two of my friends started tearing, we stared silently at the screen shocked... Chopper, probably one of the best game characters ever. Really hated it when he died...

Has anyone played this game as much times as possible trying to change this outcome or is it only just me?

yeah... I tried to stick to his tail all the way hoping they would aim for me. After gaining air control, I flew along side him all the way watching his plane wobble uncontrollably.......... then............ I saw him plummet in the stadium..............R.I.P Chopper, I won't forget you.

All these years later and I still tear up and get chills from this.

After having played AC5 multiple times and having cried tears of rage during Chopper's death, I decided not to let that happen again. So after finding out Metal Gear Solid V's Quiet would have the same fate, I immediately looked up how to keep her alive, and successfully prevented her departure.

I have never played MGS, but I see where you are getting...I'm sad too.....

Chopper's death brought back memories of loved ones and that feeling of helplessness over death in general. I just froze for a moment there, powerless, unable to move. The moment when Archer screamed "Urrrgh!", a surge of adrenaline kicked in, my eyes frowned, went into tunnel vision, heightened senses and hand-eye coordination, I just went cold-blood over all red contacts in sight. It could have gone on for a few minutes or hours, I just lost track of everything. When the dust settled, all that was left were heavy breathing and wet eyes. Then the Missing Man Formation. I broke down.

I remember being so freaking mad and crying that I wasted all missiles and had to finish with just the machine gun I literary saw red too back then and even today I despise that mission

I remember playing through this and crying as i'm finishing the mission

Not ashamed to admit, I nearly broke both my thumbs and broke my PS joysticks killing enemies after chopper died!

This and MGS 3 got me so bad at the time. This was a good era for gaming, where you felt emotional attachment to the characters and the story. Last game I felt this investeded in the story was the recent Doom.

As a 14 year old playing this game in 2004 I remember this scene. I then remember viciously hunting down every single Yuktobanian plane in the air, and blowing it out of the goddamn sky. The guy was a cocky, maverick dumbass. But he was your, cocky, maverick dumbass.

Didn’t play the game for another month or two after this... but I tried to be strong and still play but at the same time can’t get over his death... ☹️

This was just as sad as Goose's death from Top Gun.

I think for me, the best part of this was how the person who was AWACS totally broke his complete and total professionalism and showed his care and concern for Chopper, even addressing him by his nickname out of endearment. Just a little thing I noticed years later.

That was the only time in a game i actually felt something for a character in it T_T i was actually really sad and angry when chopper died

this is exactly why i love this game the most out of the entire series so far. it's got the best soundtrack esspecially the last mission, the most emotion, it's got the girl from the 4th one as your wingman XD, and the best storyline. it really immerses you into it. it's as though you ARE that fighter pilot and your not just playing the game. ever notice whenever you dive, turn, pull up, or maneuver in the game that you yourself move with it? i know i myself do, i just can't help it.

Yeah, it's a real formation too. It's called the "Missing Man Formation", it's used at funerals or memorials to symbolize fallen soldiers, pilots and sailors. It was done at Gerald Ford's funeral with 6 sqaudrons of f-15s.

I own a ps2 just to ply ace combat till this day 7/19

I replayed this mission so many times. I thought I could save him. I cried so hard.

im 24 and I just remembered this game rn. Found this. I feel like Im 15 all over again..tearing up like a lil bitch. I tried following him and making sure no one would kill him but it wasnt possible. Rip Chopper.

First time I played this, I ran out of missiles. Needless to say, I gunned down EVERY single bogey with my MG. Ain't no way the lack of explosives is gonna make me just stand by and watch Chopper go down unavenged.

Unleash the despair, he may not be one of the best aces, but he's character just memorable, I don't mind being called kid

*actual dialogue and reaction to the scene Me: CHOPPER BAIL! BAIL OUT NOW! SHUT YOUR TRAP AND BAIL *explodion* *angry rage screams* THATS IT YUKES YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE, GET YOUR MISERABLE CARCASSES BACK HERE SO I CAN TURN THOSE HUNKS OF JUNK INTO FLAMING WRECKS *enemy starts to retreat OH NO! you do NOT get off that easy!

I think this is only time I got emotional over a video game character dying him, soap, and ghost.

Being that this was the first game where I lost a wingman that was plot relevant to the story made me sad :(

With Ace Combat 7 literally around the corner, I thought I would come back and look at my favorite moments in the Ace Combat series, good or bad. I think what solidified our anger and sadness wasn't just the silence afterwards, but the fact his death had no sound as well. He was the annoying jokester that every group of friends have. We could think of someone like him, so we attached to him. When he died, there was no sound. Just his plane diving past and then nothing. I mean, come on, we hear the explosion of a plane from several thousand feet away and his explosion is silent? And to make matters worse, afterwards there is nothing but silence. No joke he was trying to make, no silence he would try to fill. Everything was quiet, and you realize what he meant to you, even if you saw it coming. This wasn't the greatest game I have ever played. Nor was this the saddest moment. But it sure as hell is in the top 5, that is for sure. And I swear if they pull this shit again I'm going to end up a mess because I have learned how to get more invested in games over the years to enjoy the story more, and that will get my ass crying real fast.

its been so long since i last played this game,but i can remember every second of this tragic level like a bad dream that haunts the back of your mind. this will always be my all time favorite videogame.

Slaughtering everyone after Chopper went down... it's basically the equivalent of Aang entering the Avatar state.

I used to think I was alone in my sadness, then I read through the comments of these great people that feel as I do.

Pure hateful rage flowed through me when I played this for the first time and it’s still impossible not to feel that every replay. THIS is Ace Combat at its best.

Here I am in 2019, still crying about this mission. And it is heavier when you can hear you wingmen "crying". It just hits me so hard. As much as I may be a SEGA Genesis fan, this is my number 1 game.

Man, I was a kid and didn't understand english but still could feel the rage when this happened.

I love how the game makes you really feel like you’re the demon once he dies. The way the enemies say things like “They’re maneuvering even better than before!” “Did the demon’s take them over?!” The game makes you feel extra badass on purpose. They know you’re angry. They even gave you the option to say no to Thunderhead when he tells you to engage for that same reason
