Choosing the best native street trees for your garden - and for your community

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A how-to guide for choosing and planting native trees near streets, sidewalks, and curb strips. Help in deciding which species are best for your garden. Expert advice from Lawrence Abbott and Brett Desmarias about exactly where to plant so that roots do not buckle sidewalks or damage sewage lines, while getting maximum sun exposure and providing shade where you want it. Much of their infomation is specific for the San Francisco East Bay. They discuss how to advocate for a transition to native plants in cities in Alameda County and Contra Costa County, such as Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, Kensington, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond, San Pablo, Antioch, Brentwood, Clayton, Concord, Danville, Hercules, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Oakley, Orinda, Pinole, Pittsburg, San Ramon, Walnut Creek, Bayview, Alamo, Blackhawk, Bay Point, Diablo, Crockett, Port Costa, Dublin, Emeryville, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Newark, Oakland, Piedmont, Pleasanton, San Leandro, Union City. Castro Valley,, San Lorenzo, and Sunol. As Doug Tallamy says, native trees are often keystone species which are the basis for ecosystems, providing food for insects and birds and serving as a habitat for the propagation of many species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Trees combat the effects of climate change by removing carbon from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen.

Great information here. When replacing a non-native street tree in front of our home in San Jose. I was hoping to plant chilopsis linearis. The city arborist wanted us to plant a non-native red oak. I reached out and requested that the tree be native to our area and they gave us quercus agrifolia as an option and we planted one out. They even sent someone out to inspect it to make sure it was the proper size and species. It has flourished and we love this tree. So sometimes a large tree can be appropriate even as a street tree for some people. I have to prune it to shape to keep it from growing too low over the street and sidewalk. A neighbor of ours liked it so much he decided to replace a half dead flowering plum tree with a coast live oak as well. He might have been influenced by us It would be nice to see more people plant native trees!!!

Hi Christopher, thank you for sharing that story! We have a beautiful 30 year old oak in front of our house; we planted it when it was 6" tall. It's not 30' tall, with a 40' canopy, and it is really beautiful. (Also, the roots grow down, so there has been no heaving at the surface.)

I love this content, but wish if there was an influencer that would do this then it would be more popular, or make ur videos shorter to appeal to a larger audience

I'm sorry you had difficulty listening to this video. Like many of the videos on this playlist, it was originally one segment of a live 5-hour-long Zoom call that was broadcast on April 16, 2023. It was not scripted; it was more in the nature of an informative conversation. I spend at least three hours editing these segments to make them more watchable before uploading them to KZread. However, there's a limit to how much I can alter the audio track without distorting the video track. None of us is a professional presenter. We are all 100% volunteers. We are using our cell phones and our home computers. So, these videos are never going to look like a PBS documentary. We volunteer because we believe it is critical to do what we can to restore the natural world around us. That having been said... Some of the videos on our channel are more scripted and less improvised. And some were shot and edited by professional videographers, when the garden tour hosts generously used their own resources to create those segments for us. I'd like to invite you to browse through the 100+ videos on the channel. I think you will find some you will really enjoy. --John Timothy Post Production Native Plant Garden Tour

So sorry I did not mention that I have listened to soooo many of your wonderful videos and LOVE what you are doing for the world thru native plants. I lead walks at the SB Botanical Gardens to teach people about the importance of planing natives. I only let you know about this one particular video because it really stood out .
