Sounds like I may want to start with a RAID drive to securely archive finished projects first, then expand as needed and as my financial situation allows.

    If you have a studio as a business get a NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a peace of mind and you have total control of your stuff and you can have for example 2 drives for your work and 2 for backup and you can have access to them anywhere in the world, just need internet.

    Overall a great video but you left out one very important piece. All those backup methods have one fatal flaw. They are all in the same location. Doesn't matter how much you move them around in RAIDs or other drives. They are all still located in the same location and vulnerable to theft, or other accidents. I dont bother with anything other than an online cloud backup solution. Every night a service on my computer automatically backs up my external to the cloud. Its cheap and fool proof - its a scheduled task that will always run and i can recover wherever i am.

    When you say that you’re storing your virtual instruments on their own drive, are you referring to the component and the ST files that are located within the Library /Audio/Plug-ins/Components and VSTs.

  • @sweetwater

    @sweetwater

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey, Justin! Great question and thanks for your interest. Most virtual instruments will have 3 primary components: a plugin, a standalone version, and the content (the actual sound and sample files). The plugin and standalone versions can be installed on to the system drive, but the sounds/samples are what should be stored on a dedicated drive. If a drive is busy running programs and audio tracks it might not have the same bandwidth as a dedicated drive to stream the virtual instrument samples, so this can help give you efficient access and increase your overall storage capacity. I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out with any questions. Connor Smith, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1793, connor_smith@sweetwater.com

    Glad they mention backups, but you should backup all data, not just session data. I would never call a RAID a backup. RAID systems are made for either speed of accessing data or high availability. If a drive fails in some RAID systems, you can still access the data, but not a RAID 0. Also worth looking into would be an offsite backup. I personally use Backblaze and it works pretty well.

    Hi Mitch. Are you saying that you don’t use your thundrbolt/USB C for you external drives? You seem to be using USB-3 ‘s . Are they fast enough? I have a Macmini M1 too. I need my 2 thunderbolt connections for my audio interface and my screen mirroring dongle. Is it possible to use the remaining USB-3 inputs for streaming/storing logic projects, Kontact libraries and other third party samplers?

    Thanks for watching! I use both Thunderbolt and USB for drives, I’ve never had an issue with either, with libraries or tracks. USB 3 is rated at 5 gigabits per second, about 10 times faster than USB 2. Thunderbolt 2 at 20 Gbps and Thunderbolt 3 at 40 Gbps are far faster than that, of course. But I’ve found USB 3 to work very well for my needs. Hope this helps! Mitch

    When buying solid state drives, the speed listed is often not true. Most none pro drives can handle fast speeds only for a shorter time and then slows down dramatically when they start to overheat. So if you really need speed, you need to find a drive that has fast speeds and don't overheat too much and the case needs to have a fan. Some have a decent heat sink and will do OK, but a fan will be much better. There are some cases you can buy and good drives, unfortunately they aren't sold together for some reason. And if they are close to good, they are very expensive. The mechanical drives (old drive tech) is much easier to find something good. Although, may want to think of a external unit with raid type 1at least if you want to actually make sure it is somewhat safely stored since it is common enough that a single drive fails. Online storage is another good backup plan since the good ones have multiple backups. I use Office 365 One Drive and it works good for me.

    BTW, 560 for external SSL drives are not very fast. ~2200 for thunderbolt 3 and ~900 for USB C. These drives do overheat often and slows down if you don't buy the right ones.... Not that cheap either, but when working on Video it is much needed. Audio is usually ok with the 560 drives....

    Great info but it's very hard to find a video or even an article where someone's explaining how to use an SSD drive for booting and DAW only and using my old HDD drive for everything else. It's a 2 year old (barely ) pc and has one 2TB HDD drive. Fast for what it is, but having a smaller 500GB SSD drive for OS and Reaper will make it much faster and you can get one of the fastest SSD drives made for only $79 right now. Samsung 970 EVO PLUS. So my quest continues to find a video or article that touches on this scenario which millions must be in as well.

    This is a very digestible video. You squeezed quite a bit of info into a 5 minute video. I would suggest to anyone interested in using some type of RAID for redundancy to do a fair amount of research on the subject before making a purchase. There are many types of RAID and not all provide redundancy. Additionally not all drives are optimized to be part of a RAID. You can look up shingled vs non shingled in RAID for more info on that.

    misleading information here, hard drives are usually much more slow and unreliable than ssd’s, especially when it comes to robust and heavy use. they’re also significantly less expensive than ssd’s in gb/$ which influenced the acronym to “redundant array of inexpensive disks”, where “inexpensive” has now been modernized to “independent”. another thing, besides in an allusion while mentioning raid 1, i don’t think i heard it mentioned that regularly backing up all important data to at least one other carrier is crucially important, unless you’re trying to restore gigabytes with tears of defeat. also drive speed matters mostly for system and application startup, when transferring large files, playback while picking out samples, or loading a project with samples which from then on are loaded to the ram and accessed from there, thus it usually doesn’t make a difference how many drives are used and how they’re sorted, which is all to personal preference. there’s a lot of information out there, i’m scratching my head as to how this got through unrevised.
