Choosing grips and weights for Barebow Archery

Спорт

The third video segment dealing with Barebow archery equipment selection and setup.
In this segment, Coach Elton discusses important aspects of how the archers bow hand interacts with the bow to help beginners understand why the bow hand has such an effect on the shot execution. He also dives into deeper detail on the subject of bow weights before wrapping up the segment.
The newly introduced Printify Pop-up shop is available here:

    Good discussion on weights. One of the first thing I did with my weights was to change the center of gravity on the bow. Weights, as you pointed out, help with the low frequency the archer introduces while at full draw. Weights dampen that motion. Additionally, I have been playing with weights at the limb pockets to control the high frequency vibration of the shot.

    Hi! I am just starting barebow after foing Olympic for a year. My bow grip has always been a bit of a problem, but Im not sure how to get it right. In your example, I can clearly see the difference in arrow flight but can't really see any big difference in grip. Is it more about the pressure than position in this example or am i missing something? Thanks.

    In my example, it was actually both. Position was exaggerated to be in the incorrect location, and pressure was exaggerated to induce riser torque. If you are struggling to find the correct placement and pressure, always pay attention to the reaction of the bow upon the release; as shown in my slow-motion video, the reaction will help you to understand what the bow is doing based on your pressure point location. Make minor adjustments to pressure point location to get a better understanding of what the pressure does on your specific grip based on your shot execution, until you get a desirable bow reaction. (Typically a minor movement of the bow straightforward upon release of the arrow.)

    Does a barebow weight anything against vibration in the limbs or do i have to look for a dampener instead?

  • @barebowbasics

    @barebowbasics

    Effectively, no. If you have excessive limb vibration, and you are sure the tune is good, then the only solution left is to use stick on dampers like Limb-Savers to absorb residual vibration in the limbs.

    I have to disagree with your definition as to the main function of weights added to the riser, the main reason weights NEED to be added is to balance the mass of the top and bottom of the riser. Most risers have more mass above the grip than below, just to make the sight window requires more material than the straight section below the handle. This means that when the string hits the limbs, the bottom of the riser moves faster than the top, causing the "kick back" where the top limb moves back towards the archer, by adding weight below the handle this can be balanced, leading to a neutral reaction. This is why manufactures have weights that fit inside the riser, not for increased stability. As far as I am concerned, if you need to add weight for stability, then you should shoot an Olympic Recurve as the do stability so much better.
