Choosing Breeding Stock: Controversial Standards
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Today, we share insights into our selection process for breeding stock, exploring the heritability of traits and the use of tools like index numbers and scoring. Join the conversation on the complexities of evaluating sheep and the challenges of selecting replacement stock. We discuss the criteria we are looking for, and we offer up food for thought as to traits that may or may not be heritable or desirable. We challenge whether or not index numbers or scoring are scientifically viable based on the large number of variables involved in evaluating sheep and therefore suggest that these tools instead be used solely as a guide, rather than for selection of replacement stock.
Watch as we document the weaning process of our January-born lambs from both the Suffolk and Dorset groups. After a lot of running groups back and forth between barns, we finally had all the ewes and lambs in the correct barns.
Stay tuned for more thought-provoking discussions and debate in future episodes! #LambWeaning #BreedingCriteria #EvaluatingSheep

Your flock looks amazing… but even more important to me is health, mortality/illness. Animals are expensive we can’t afford struggling (vetting, me or vet, extra time nursing, extra time catching up) and then possibly dying. Your flock is very healthy and hearty. Love the thoughtful conversation.❤️🐑

Thanks, Justina. Knock on wood, but yes, we are lucky to have a very healthy and robust flock!🙂
Sheep can get a little mule headed it seems. 😂 The size of Moses, WOW! Great information today. I’m looking forward to the keeper selection and all involved. THANK YOU!!

Interesting information Lynn!! I understand your view and agree. Numbers can be deceiving when only being viewed on paper. So many variables go into growth and development. It’s difficult to compare apples and oranges. Thanks so much for a great video!! Stay safe!!🙏🏻❤️

Good morning Arnie and Lynn. The sheep look like soldiers marching. When the sheep fall down they look embarrassed and jump right up saying did anyone see that. 😂😂😂 What a handsome bunch of ram lambs. Professor another very interesting video. I learn something new with each lesson. One of many reasons I watch each day. Thank you so much. Enjoy the evening. Big big hugs to you both. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😉😉😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Glad you enjoyed it!
I hope that weaning went well and that the lambs and their moms both took it well. It was fun seeing the sheep get moved around. The lambs really enjoyed all of that space and it was fun watching them play. They really enjoyed their new hay, they got pretty quiet! I just love Moses. He's growing so fast! Natural breeding seems to work very well on your farm. I like the way you do things. Singles and twins seems like a good goal. I didn't know that mother sheeps bodies create just enough milk for the number of lambs. Finding sub par lambs does sound interesting but difficult probably because of the decision. May is back in the feeder again! She is so naughty lol! I'm looking forward to seeing the lambs grow and also who you will keep. Thanks for another fun video. See you tomorrow. ❤🐑

I am extremely partial to Moses too. He reminds me so much of his dad. Although there are a few more Gladiator sons I'm liking a lot too. He did very well for us again this year. Picking keepers is always difficult but fun too. It's interesting to see who Arnie picks and who I pick. Often we agree but just as often, we probably disagree 😆 Like I said, it's not a science!😁
Are you downsizing again with selling the Dorset Mother Ewes? Awesome video facts 🧡🤍🖤💚

My summary: For rams, what matters is genotype. For ewes, both genotype and phenotype matter.

I think both matter for rams and ewes

@@EwetopiaFarms Because phenotype allows you to guess the genotype? I’m imagining a big, sturdy ram siring two big lambs and one mini lamb on a big, sturdy ewe. If the big sturdy lambs grow up to be big, sturdy rams, we know for sure they have “big, sturdy” genes because they are fully expressing them. If the mini ram grows up to be a medium ram we can *guess* that he has “big, sturdy” genes because of his relatives; because being a triplet can explain why he was born a mini; and because he grew from mini to medium, not mini to small. But we can’t be sure. Even if he has lovely “big, sturdy” genes we can’t see them because he isn’t fully expressing them. Something like that?

@alisoncummins2726 pretty much. In our experience, rarely will a smaller sheep produce bigger lambs that why we select the sturdy phenotype in your example. Basically, what you see is what you get. Then you have to know which traits are highly heritable and which are not. Number of lambs is not highly heritable whereas leg structure is. So many things to consider which is what makes breeding so much fun!
I stopped my enrolment in Genovis as I found the numbers didnt mean much when I was choosing keeper lambs. It was an extra expense and alot of work weighing lambs and inputing numbers and then deleting each animal manually as they were sold. I was spending too much time in front of my computer and only two people were interested in their numbers. I never paid to do loin scanning as it was going to be an extra expense. I spent money on genetics instead☺️I’m like you, I like looking at the animals, their conformation and take all the other things into consideration. I also find if I dont breed my yearlings that first year, most time they have twins instead of singles, therefore they have already caught up from not being bred too young and having that single. I find first timers are so much better with twins, their udder stays uniform, ease of lambing smaller lambs is so much better on them too. I think your right about time of year, natural breeding and i think lambing yearly regains that ewe up to perfect condition that twins are most likely. Thats the goal right🤣

We are in total agreement!🥰
So, a weird question. We have heard that a yealing ram or buck is much more likely to sire male offspring his first year. It rather seems to be true for us, but we have small flocks. Have you ever seen or noticed this to be true? One year, it was 6 rams, no ewe lambs. Then, 14 rams, 6 ewes. Also, 4 bucklings and 2 doelings. I have not seen any real studies to prove this, but maybe you have a thought? Thanks for all the time and work you put into your excellent videos!

Over the years, it is generally about even for us on boys and girls. I think with a small sample size, the results may look different. But interesting!🙂
Is Arnie in a bad mood today or needs a break from the ewes
