Choosing A Canoe for Moose Hunting: Capacity is King.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I moose hunt in lakes and rivers with no more than occasional avoidable class 2. These canoes work for me. I find that most people under-canoe. You need a canoe that gives you a minimum of 7-8 Inches of freeboard when loaded with the enormous weight required. The links below should help!

www.clippercanoes.com/canoes/ Has some great resources for capacity when you look at ind canoe models.
www.clippercanoes.com/20-foot-mackenzie/ A great double ender
www.clippercanoes.com/mackenzie-sport-18-foot/ A great Square Stern.
holycowcanoe.com/2014/our-canoes/ystern/ This Goliath model is another 17" deep Freighter with the superior Y-Stern design. Looks great
Novacraft makes a nice boat the Prospector 18 is pretty versatile www.novacraft.com/canoes/prospector-18/
Another good freighter this one is in a tough but overly flexible lay-up. Need to keep the motor power down in the 3HP range or it oilcans badly. esquif.com/en/canoe/cargo/
This Saskatchewan company uses epoxy resin so it should be tough. Nice looking boat but only 15" deep so capacity maybe in the 1300 pound range with 8" freeboard? www.kisseynewcanoecompany.com/sportsman
Like the looks of this one.... too bad it isn't a bit deeper. Still big enough to get the job done
northstarcanoes.com/canoe/b-19/
A huge double ender. A bit heavy in fiberglass but a lot of boat. abitibico.ca/en/products/scott-classic-canoe-series/two-rivers-21?results=4669,2879,807,918,908,2878,3568,2866,922,3587,4668,915,919,73,914,920,909,910,911,906,3577,925,907,3821,924

Just wanted to say really appreciate the videos, I’ve watched them all! New into hunting by freighter canoe but am loving being able to be quiet and in control when I need to. Nothing beats drifting downriver and not having to start the motor to keep yourself in the middle. I bring my kayak paddle along with a canoe paddle, good for solo and going down rapids. My little 5hp Honda sips fuel like no other. Taking the wife moose hunting in the freighter this weekend as well, granddads 1960s aluminum Grumman freighter!

Some valuable advice! It's interesting, canoe preferences are still quite regional. Probably due to distribution and availability. In the northeast the XL Tripper (no longer made--was a Royalex hull) is highly prized. Similar to the Prospector design, 20' long, 16" deep, 41" beam, listed as having a 1,600lb. capacity (seems generous..). Allagash Rangers put 5H.P. side mounts on them for running up and down the river, and the first thing everyone in Maine says about the XL is, "you can haul a moose out in one!" I have two XL Trippers, and love them. I haven't put a moose in one yet, but they are great for big loads and big river canoe trips. They paddle quite well. A bit loud, but the 20' double ended Grumman, or 19' square-stern Grumman might be moose hunting canoe options. The latter is widely available here in Minnesota.

We usually travel with two canoes, we don’t travel light(Snowtrekker four dog stove, wanigan etc). We don’t debone anything other than the spine/pelvis bone(best way to not waste meat)! As for freighter it is for sure an option and I can tell you that last week we were the only one with canoes, every one else where motorized on a 5km lake..... that is laziness!! “I’ve got 4-5 years left of moose hunting....” so, all those great moose rifles will have to go somewhere to keep getting moose???🤔😉

Well If I can get fit enough maybe I can make it a few more, but yes someday someone will get some good rifles! I took the Snowtrekker last year but had trouble finding good camp-sights close to the water with the low water level. I might try it again with the Kni-Co stove as it sure is nice having some heat, (also a cot!) I can up my gear a bit with the big MacSport.

Gave both my sons for Xmas a few years back a 1953 and 1952 Win 71 in 348 win it’s a shame neither one of them Moose hunt here in Alaska. I have my own Win 71 but my eyesight with those factory sights are hard to focus……..,so I went to scoped rifles. But sure do love the old Win 71 with my handload of RL19 and Barnes 250FN originals great combo for Alaska hunting.

I'm in Alaska with my first freighter, a 19' Frontiersman out of Canada in the 1970s. How would I calculate the load capacity? Thanks man! Love your content!

  • @north61

Not sure of the math..I'd compare the size to the Clipper Mackenzie on their web sight and calculate from there. Unlike a lot of manufacturers I trust the Clipper figures as they give a freeboard to weight number. I like keeping 8" of freeboard. Depth is very important as is overall volume. Thanks for watching my channel!

So would there be a major disadvantage if you had a flat bottom Jon boat around 16’ over a BIG outfitter canoe like the 18’+ boats aside from getting thru some tight spots?

Canoes have the best weight to carry ratio. If you have to carry the boat the canoe is the way to go.
