CHONKY OPALEYE!? Fishing Under The Hotels (Catch and Cook) Monterey CA

In this video, I go rock fishing and do a catch and cook under the hotels in Monterey CA! I also caught a huge chonky opaleye. Definitely my PB, easily around 14 inches or bigger. This was also my last day of fishing in Monterey, so I kept it rather simple, not my usual abundance of catches, but I focused more on just having fun and relaxing before having to leave Monterey. Even so, the opaleye I caught just shows how awesome fishing in Monterey is, it never ceases to amaze me. Monterey will always be one of my favorite places to fish c: For the catch and cook under the hotels, I make vietnamese sweet and sour soup, or Canh Chua. Since I did not have all the right ingredients, I substituted a lot of relatively key ingredients, such as tamarind. Even so, the catch and cook still came out pretty good, definitely would have been better. Can't beat hot soup after a cold long day of fishing out here in the Monterey Bay area c:
*Side Note*: In this specific MPA, you cannot gather mussels to use as bait. I gathered my mussels from a non-MPA area prior to fishing here. If the MPA regulations don't specify that you CAN gather mussels, you cannot collect them c:

Vietnamese Sweet and Sour Soup (Canh Chua) Recipe - Will update soon!
#firstfishfreedom is a tradition that I started a while back. The basis for this tradition is to release the first fish you catch, regardless of what it is (prized, PB, good eats, maybe even world record someday haha). I will only keep the first fish if it is gravely wounded or gut shotted (and a species I can legally keep). If I keep the first fish, then I will pass on the tradition to the second fish, and so forth. Any day of fishing is a blessing, catching a fish and beating the skunk is another blessing on top of that, so I want to return that blessing and luck back to the fish, so they may live another day, get bigger, and maybe I catch them again in the future c:

    Great video Sven, that was a really big Opaleye. Even though it was your first fish, glad to hear you were going to let him go regardless. I can tell you love to fish just to fish and it's not all about the biggest or craziest catches for you. You remind me of myself when I was younger, fishing is not as abundant as it used to be but more fisherman could learn from your school of thought. I look forward to more relaxing videos, keep it up.

    a few things... one: throw some chum... two: very soft, cheap rubber boots get excellent grip on rocks, it can save your life (not expensive, hard boots, soft cheap US made ones), three: steel weights will snag FAR less in steep rock, old bolts, rebar chunks, etc... last, the spider hitch rig is your friend in snag prone areas, I did a video on my buddy's channel 'cast and spear', that explains it easily

    @@SvenGoesFishing I literally use anything I can find, chain, rebar chunks, nails, huge bolts.. all are very snag resistant... spark plugs are good too, but they will snag a lot more than long, skinny weights do, with chain being almost totally snag free even in heavy kelp, etc...

    Good to know :D never thought about that, always opt for the usual lead sinkers, but it also makes sense because lead sinkers can still deform when you bash it through rocks so it’ll get stuck more, but steel won’t deform so easily :o

  • @SvenGoesFishing

    @SvenGoesFishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    That’s the beauty of Monterey, honestly anywhere along the rocky coast you’ll be able to catch nice sized rockfish :D just be careful where you plan to fish, Monterey has a lot of MPAs, some where you can fish so double check before you start fishing. Coast Guard Pier is going to be a good place to start, a lot of good sized rockfish are catchable even as close as the areas between the kelp and the rocks! For more consistent results, punching through the kelp and fishing that should have a good 8-12 inch rockfish, but you’re going to need a weedless setup to not tangle in the kelp. I would also recommend having a long braid with 30+ lb line to help slice through the kelp if you happen to get snagged in there c: message me on Instagram and I’ll see how else I can help, thanks for watching Marco L c:👌🎣

Any rocky spot in Monterey (assuming it’s not in a no fishing MPA) should have them so have fun when you explore c: I caught this guy on mussels, if you want to gather mussels, you need to make sure you’re in either a non-MPA or in one that distinctively says you can gather them c: hope that helps, good luck when you go exploring :D 👌🎣

    I get what you mean, farmed fish can be iffy but usually, it's not that bad. In terms of ocean fish, it'll depend on where it's caught for me. For example, I refused to keep and eat any fish I catch in LA waters since it's always super polluted (I also don't like to fish LA waters often for the same reason even if I'm catching and releasing). The waters in Monterey are usually nice and clean though so I have no worries there haha oehha.ca.gov/fish/ca-fishmap ^Here's a map of any fish advisories in California, it's a nice resource if you're concerned about any locations that might be polluted. If the spot I'm fishing at isn't marked on the map, that's good enough for me c: Hope that helps!👌🎣
