Chomsky on North Korea & Iran: Historical Record Shows U.S. Favors Violence Over Diplomacy

democracynow.org - Over the last month, the Trump administration has escalated tensions between both North Korea and Iran. Vice President Mike Pence has warned North Korea, saying all options are on the table-including preemptive military strikes. Will either of these conflicts escalate to outright war? For more, Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman asked world-renowned linguist, professor and political dissident Noam Chomsky, during a wide-ranging interview Monday night at the First Parish Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Kind of a crippling false equivalency. To say that "Pearl Harbor" was caused solely by "unilateral US sanctions" is just ridiculous. Japan was the aggressor of the Second World War. There is no denying that. They illegally annexed the short-lived Korean Empire and then proceeded to invade and occupy Manchuria under false pretenses. Once again they would contrive a casus belli and invade mainland China starting the second Sino-Japanese War which would result in the deaths of millions of Chinese. The Japanese committed acts of brutality which make the Nazis look like meddling schoolyard bullies while their Unit 731 chemical/biological warfare experimentation facility made even the most heinous of Nazi scientist look like a child burning ants with a magnifying glass. The attack on Pearl Harbor wasn't a defensive one, it was a preemptive attack motivated by what Japan saw as the most favorable reality in a inevitable conflict with the United States. The question isn't whether Japan wouldn't have engaged with America, its the question of when. The Japanese would have reached the Philippines at some point in time (which was an American colony). All the sanctions did was expedite their dire need for oil as the Chinese had successfully created a quagmire for the Japanese. Their plans were to invade the Dutch East Indies in order to acquire its rich oil fields. This invasions would have without a doubt prompted a swift declaration of war on the behalf of the US who was already eager to join the war. Meanwhile, Iran and North Korea are victims of colonization. North Korea is a nation which was artificially drawn up by two American colonels overnight following the "liberation" of the country. America then proceeded to install the brutal South Korean Rhee regime which would brutalize any sort of dissent to their authoritarian rule: resulting in 100,000 civilian deaths prior to the "outbreak" of war in June of 1950. The Americans would also reinstall heinous Japanese colonial collaborators back into their offices in South Korea. In essence, South Korea pretty much inherited its entire bureaucracy from its colonial one. Resistance to these atrocious violations of Korean sovereignty by South Korean civilians/former anti-Japanese resistance fighters/activists was swiftly disposed of with brutal efficiency. What should have been a civil war (in which the outbreak of who started what is still unknown there are evidence to point towards both sides starting the war in June 1950, in fact, American reports indicate that a South Korea commander at Haeju - who was, surprise surprise, a heinous Japanese collaborator - began attacking North Koreans who counterattacked with a full-scale invasion) ending with North Korea's swift and decisive victory in reunifying the peninsula, ended with colonial intervention and the invasion of North Korea violating America's own contrived and "internationally recognized" 38th parallel. The Americans now used this contrived and arbitrary line called the 38th parallel to frame as a legitimate recognized international border to the United Nations which, without the USSR at the time (which will not be explained in this short post), approved military intervention. Might I remind you that this 38th parallel was nothing less than a violation of Korean sovereignty. Korea had been nominally unified ever since the 7th century by the mighty militaristic empire (nominal kingdom) of Goguryeo. Its language, ethnicity, and borders had all been strongly solidified by the 9th-10th century. There are very little nations in this world that has had such a long, defined, and developed national identity. Hence, this was nothing more than a civil war. It was a war between Koreans in which Koreans deserved the right to determine their own form of government/economic system. Yet the Americans did not see it as such. Contrary to the narratives drenched in American exceptionalism and its messianic complex, America did not intervene on the behalf of "defending the free people of the world." In fact, it wasn't even for strategic importance either. South Korea was of little importance to the US. It had no natural resources to speak of, a supposedly "dumb" and "uncivilized" population incapable of successfully adopted the practices of entrepreneurship and business practices of the Western capitalist model. The only remote strategic importance South Korea held was its place in Dean Acheson's "Great Crescent" policy which attempted to link Northeast Asia with the Middle East in which South Korea would be the quintessential conduit for Japan's economic revival. The only reason for America's intervention was that of hubris. Pure national hubris in which North Korea had challenged the pride of the United States. Furthermore, contrary to conventional Western thought, North Korea is not the demon nation everyone in the occident portrays it to be. North Korea was a nation whose leaders were raised through the bloody and brutal struggle against the Japanese imperial force in the cold mountains of occupied Manchuria in the 1930s. Most of North Korea's founders and highest commands of the KPA were weathered veterans of the anti-Japanese struggle. Due to South Korea's dominance of historiography is Western academic spheres, the narrative of "helpless victimization" and "peaceful resistance" is what paints the image of Korea's experience under Japanese colonization. However, this is far from the truth. Extensive scholarship has unveiled through Soviet and Chinese documentation that approximately 90% of all Manchurian resistance was made up of ethnic Koreans during Japan's occupation. Later in the war, Sino-Korean forces solidified their unity and despite heavy Chinese support, the Korean ethnic group still dominated the bulk of all guerrilla forces. Their successes were numerous and perhaps one of the most illustrious of all leaders was Kim Il-sung. A guerilla mastermind who made a name for himself at the Battle of Dongning in 1932. He would regularly engage is large scale conflicts (involving hundreds of Japanese soldiers) in which he would terrorize the occupation forces of Manchuria. In one bout, commander Maeda and his troop of 150 soldiers with police officers tracked down Kim Il-sung's beat down and casualty ridden unit. Despite this, Kim trapped Maeda and proceeded to defeat the force killing most and taking their weapons and munitions. It's no wonder Japan would devote 20,000 of its elite Kwantung Army to track down Kim and his comrade Choe. Later they would devote even more soldiers to the cause. Kim would fight until 1941 where he would reside in the Soviet Union (like Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, Kim also had a "dark period" which was redacted from history). The US is an evil nation. It's history of intervention and meddling in the third world is incredibly rich. To this day, the Koreans remain at war with Americans using South Korea as nothing more than an abused military base. Americans have embargoed North Korea for its development of nuclear weapons (which were created in response to energy shortages and buffed in response to the Bush administrations policy of "preemptive nuclear attack" on North Korea coupled with his invasion of Iraq) causing widespread famines throughout the nation in the 1990s. North Korea at the moment suffers the worst sanctions it has ever had. Yet the nation continues to live with steely determination to maintain and restore the sovereignty and dignity of the Korean people. Just last year they developed the Hwasong-16. It is speculated to be a multi-warhead ICBM capable of hitting any notable target on this globe. The previously successfully tested Hwasong-15 was already capable of hitting mainland United States. These rapid advances are a testament to the will of the Korean people and a mobilized oppressed people driven by ideology. I sincerely believe the third world can rise once more. While the communist bloc has unfortunately fallen and the existence of a centralized movement of third world liberation has disappeared, the revolution lives on in countries such as North Korea and Cuba. I also believe that we here in the US is experiencing a resurgence in leftist thought akin to the 1960s. We as Americans are realizing more and more that we are all victims of American hegemony - more specifically, the neoliberal economic system which governs all sectors of American life.

Chomsky's overview of the Syrian War is a good example of his limited hangout style. First, he calls Syria the "Assad Regime", which is a propaganda term. Second, he uses the term "Rebels" as if the opposition are Syrians. Reality- the foreign fighters are almost all mercenaries from China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other countries. They are being financed by the West and Saudi Arabia. No mention of that situation. I could go on, but while you get a decent amount of facts, they never add up to actual reality.

One side says one thing and the other side says another and there is just no objectivity. Your statement seems completely biased, because nothing in this wrld is that black and white and that's why i'm not going to believe you. But these propagandas and counter propagandas have made it so difficult for a neutral person to figure out what the hell is going on there. Almost all the side are lying. U can't trust American administration, it's mainstream media which is really just state propaganda tool when it comes to foreign affairs. The recent poll didn't say President Trump's approval rating was lowest in history. It said it was lowest (since 1945?) compared to other presidents' up to to April of their first year in office.

I would like to better understand what the far reaching implications of agreeing to North Korea's terms would mean in so far as overall peace and stability. I still sense that it is more likely a stall tactic much like many of the more notorious figures in history used. Lets not forget that North Korea has some pretty radical and human right suppressing ideas. What I don't understand is why would North Korea...Knowing full well their destruction in a conflict with any super power, would not simply lean more headily towards some level of complicity. They sure as hell are not making themselves any stronger on a world economy stage by dumping resources into their military.

Cousin Amy Not only do you get wronger, but also ghastlier. Like granny says, “ a lil paint on the ole barn makes everone feel better.” Well, big Don, kept the peace, proved you fellas, Amy and Naum, vastly ineffectual and wrong, exclamation point.

You must not have listened, he stated it would be very unlikely Trump would attack North Korea. In fact everything Chomsky states is historically true.

Thanks, informative video but the government in the DPRK is good, protecting real human rights contrary to USA which has concentrations camp in Guantanamo, use torture and secret prisons, and attacking innocent people with drones all the time.

Aren't we so fortunate to have Noam Chomsky to critique U.S. Foreign Policy? After all, who could possibly be better qualified to discuss this important topic, than a career Linguistics Professor, with ZERO Real World Experience in Government, International Affairs, Diplomacy, or Military matters! This makes perfect sense-Right??? UGH-It is a tragedy that anybody actually takes this ridiculous old man seriously! SMH

This silly old man is better informed that any politician alive , when he speaks the UN general assembly is packed with politicians. In my country I couldn't be there at one of his readings, it was sold out in no time (2,5 Euro) I had to watch outside on large tv screens like many others. I don't think you have an idea of what his qualifications actually are. And there are US former politicians with a lot of military experience that agree with him like Lawrence wilkerson.

Atmosphere Adr, You're still missing the point here: EVEN IF Chomsky really is, '...better informed that any politician alive... ', then that makes him look even WORSE than just being incompetent! Just imagine that Chomsky was, "...better informed than any basketball player alive... ', on how to beat Lebron James one-on-one in Basketball, but NEVER demonstrated that he can actually DO it! How absurd that would be! So IF Chomsky is actually so much more capable in the area of Foreign Policy, then let's see him go to work for the US State Dept, and show that he can do better himself! NOT merely criticize OTHERS-Who are at least TRYING! THAT is a REAL, 'Qualification '! As far as Chomsky's lectures, ' Selling Out ', Justin Beiber's concerts sell out too, but does make JB an expert in music???

Chomsky completely disagrees with the current political system, and therefore can't be part of it and doesn't want to be , obviously. His influence as an intellectual in the world outside the US is pretty big. Lots of times he was chosen as the most important intellectual alive.

That is just another way of saying: " Noam Chomsky is so smart and capable, that IF he got involved himself, he COULD do a much better job, and improve things for everyone! -BUT he does not want to! Instead, he'll just criticize others from the outside! " Which is a COWARD'S COP-OUT!!! SMH

Just being in a government does not mean you have an enormous influence , there is so much more needed to improve things. Real changes have to be initiated by the population. The rights that we in the west have today came through protest and resistance from the populations , not as a gift from governments. You don't have to join a government to have a lot of influence. Chomsky is just as well in the game as politicians, he is not just an outsider. For example he led the protest movement against the war in vietnam, not just as a commentator but as an activist.

Chamberlain was foolish enough to waste time with diplomacy . Diplomacy often is an excuse to reload. North Korea and Iran want to be" paid to behave "...as all second and third world countries try to do.

I love it how Noam just assumes that North Korea would adhere to these agreements. He seems to be unaware that North Korea routinely uses brinkmanship as a negotiation tactic and then when they need something else they just rescind previous agreements and ratchet up the rhetoric again. Thinking North Korea might possibly be negotiating in good faith is like thinking Donald Trump might be telling the truth - I suppose they're both due, but if you were a betting man you probably wouldn't waste your money. The trouble is that Noam's intellectual starting point is the axiom that the US is responsible for all the worlds ills, and then every conflict becomes just more evidence to support his conclusion. Not that I am saying the US always acts in the best way, and there have been plenty of times where principals have been sacrificed for the 'greater good', be it anti-Communism or anti-terrorism, and usually it has been the case that the last sacrifice of principal creates the next existential threat, but the intention has been in the right place even when the actions haven't always been. The US maintains bases in South Korea and Japan to protect South Korea and Japan, not to intentionally aggravate North Korea or increase the level of violence. Of course with Trump in charge...
