Recipe adapted by Ina Garten
Ingredients:
1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 cups sugar
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup strong, freshly brewed coffee
2 eggs @ room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350º F. Combine your wet ingredients (buttermilk, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla) in a bowl. In your mixer bowl (separate) combine the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, baking powder) and mix on low speed for a minute. Then slowly pour in the wet ingredients bowl, adding to the dry mix in the mixer bowl. Let it come together (don't overmix) and add the coffee. Fill a cupcake pan with liners and transfer the batter into a measuring cup or pitcher for easy pouring. Fill the liner cups 3/4 or 2/3 the way up and bake for 13-16 minutes. Toothpick test the cupcakes and if they're done (toothpick comes out clean) let them cook for 10 minutes before applying frosting. Enjoy and don't forget to share this video!
*makes 2 dozen cupcakes

I first saw this video 6 years ago and it’s still a staple in my home. I make it for all the holidays and birthdays.
That sounds delicious!
yes you can! that would be delicious. yummmmm.. so chocolatey!
great idea!
thanks for watching, judy! please let me know how you like them! :)
hi diana! buttermilk helps bring out the flavor of the chocolate. if you don't have any buttermilk, you can make your own! for every cup of milk, add in 1 tbsp of lemon juice or white vinegar!
hi! i use the wilton 1M tip for the frosting. :)
hi helena! you can make your own buttermilk - add 1 tbsp of white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. let it sit for about 5 minutes and you have buttermilk! for the coffee, you can replace with additional buttermilk.
it is lake champlain unsweetened cocoa powder. i got this at whole foods and it is really good! :)
This cupcake is amazing! I make this all the time and it always come out amazing! The chocolate flavour is really strong and you cannot taste the coffee at all. Thank you so much for this recipe!
hi there! yes you can definitely mix it by hand with a whisk and spatula. it would take a little more arm power, but will still come out deliciously. enjoy! :)
This is by far the best chocolate cupcake recipe that I've ever tried! Everyone loved them! And your videos are so easy to follow. Thanks for these wonderful cupcakes!!

Aw Thanks Brittani Barthelemy ! Glad everyone liked them :P
hi there! yes you can - for every cup of regular milk, add in 1 tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar and it will create the buttermilk.
the coffee totally helps bring out that rich chocolate flavor! i'm so glad you enjoyed it!! xo
yay, i'm glad you like the oatmeal raising cookies. have fun baking! :)
Aw I'm so happy they came out well for you, Rachita! Thanks for letting me know and for watching :)
Hi there! Thanks for your feedback! I actually write all of the credits/adapted by in the info section where the recipe and direction is listed. Coincidentally this is the first that I have heard of the black magic cake, as this was originally adapted by Ina Garten's Beatty chocolate cake. Thanks for letting me know!
thank you so much for stopping by! :) i'm so glad they were a success for you too. so delicious! :)
Hi gwen! the oil helps moisten the cake and doesn't compete with the flavor of the chocolate. Your oven may be too hot so i would reduce the time that you're baking them. i hope that helps! good luck.
i would put them in for 7-8 min! but depending on how hot your oven is, just make sure they come out clean with a toothpick. you dont' want to over/under cook them.
Hi Dominika! That's so sweet :) Yes, you can use normal salt but cut the amount in half (use just 1/2 tsp) since it is more salty than kosher salt. Thanks for watching!
yes you can! you just need to extend the baking time to 30-35 minutes depending on size of your pan!
Made these last Saturday and my son loves it it's so moist and light. Not to mention supper easy to make too. Thanks for the recipe.
This recipe is THE BEST! I usually half the recipe and it makes around 16 cupcakes.
I love and appreciate it! I will make it when I have oven, cant wait to bake it..
that's very sweet of you to say. thank you so much! i really appreciate your support! xo
All I have to say THANK YOU! I made them yesterday and they are flufly moist pillows of heaven😋 even without the frosting. This is the recipe I will keep in my notes for sure😊
Hi kyra, you can sub with hot water. It won't give as much depth as the coffee, but will help the cupcake stay moist. :)
did they cool down all the way? mine tends to stick when it's still too warm. or you can try baking them for a minute or two longer. it might not be done yet. good luck!
I'm just making this at the moment oh god it smells so good i love your recipes
Thank you so much! I gave some to my mum's workplace and everyone loved it! I must recommend this recipe to everyone!
the coffee will help bring out the flavor of the chocolate and give it more depth.
hi! i'm using the star tip #1M by Wilton
hands down the best chocolate cupcake recipe I have ever tried!!!👏👌 it's soo moisty and just perfect !!!
Love it!
Cant wait to try this!
hi there! you can substitute with buttermilk but the coffee helps to bring out more of the chocolate flavor. :)
You make me so happy love your cupcakes Thank you
I made these and they turned out perfect! Delicious! Thanks for sharing :)
hi gwen - you can make your own buttermilk! for every cup of milk, add in 1 tbsp of vinegar or lemon juice, and you have buttermilk! :)
yes, definitely. I would just 1/2 the recipe though because the eggs will be difficult to divide more than that. good luck!
thank you so much for watching! :)

I'm not a big fan of cupcake in fact but your recipe just astonished me! The texture was soooo tender and moist without too much sweetness. It's just perfectly matches with your vanilla buttercream frosting. Love your single recipe and plz keep uploading new ones!

yes! just cut the ingredients in half and they'll come out perfect! :)
Made this today soo yummy and chocolatey. I frosted it with marscapone frosting.
Hello sweet Honeysuckle Catering! I just tried your chocolate cupcake recipe and it's more than amazing! The cupcakes have already been eaten! They are delicious... dry outside and bit of creamy inside... just perfection! The only problem I faced was with the american frosting cream... i tried your recipe and i did a serious mistake... i melt the butter in the microwave oven before i mix it with the powder sugar, so despite the high speed mixing it never came up a cream!
you can make your own! add 1 tbsp of lemon juice or white vinegar to every cup of milk. let it sit for 5 minutes and voila - you have buttermilk!
I love your videos, they're just so awesome
I used your cupcake recipe and it's seriously the best one I have ever tried. Thank you!!! 😘 Following!!!!

So happy to hear!!! Thanks for trying it out
unfortunately corn oil will will give it a different taste. vegetable oil is very neutral so it's best for baking. you can use regular iodized salt, just cut the amount in half.
hi elena, i'm so sorry for the delay in response! i just saw your comment. for the buttercream, i don't recommend melting the butter as it just needs to be room temperature - soft but still firm enough to holds its shape. this way, it will be able to cream up and mix well with the sugar instead of melting. i hope that helps! i love that baking is your new hobby! its the best way to friends and family's hearts... and belly. lol! let me know if you have other questions! thanks for watching! xo
Eres adorable... y gracias por la receta 🌹
you can, but it does change the flavor a bit.
