CHMT-36VA Running with IC's (SOIC + QFN)

Ғылым және технология

Building my ESP32 target boards. Just the end part - notice I've got cut tape on a few of these w/o reels. I added cover tape extension which got stuck (oops) you can see it stops part-way through and I've got to fix it.
Keeping notes at github.com/colinoflynn/chmt36... .

So cool. I had a chance to see the manufacturing line at Sunsel in Dartmouth, and their pick and place machines were quite impressive.

Yeah this little guy's a bit slower - my video of the ChipWhisperer-Lite PnP is at the Sunsel facility and it's crazy how fast that thing runs! This one takes a lot of fiddling as you can see too...

How have your results been with placing the ESP3? I have a design utilizing the 6mm 48QFN, 0.4 pin pitch, and am currently looking into a pick and place machine.

what size QFN's were those? I'm having hard time with a 16 pin QFN on the same machine and I'm stuck with this particular package

I picked this machine up and I still haven't used it. I have so many questions which their manual just doesn't cover and response is not complete. For me at the moment populating a couple of boards with low parts counts by hand is quicker then setting up a machine. I am looking forward to using this machine on higher volumes. Thanks for setting up the github notes, hopefully I can contribute.

Hey Colin, I see you have this machine for approx 3 years now. Can you share your experience over these years? Planning to get similar model.

Done many thousands of boards on it by now! Still working basically the same for better or worse (still same issues, but it hasn't gotten worse at all). At the price-point it's still one of the better machines around. There was I think a way to reprogram it with openpnp firmware too which was very promising to fix some of the firmware issues. But check out UnexpectedMaker's saga with Charmhigh - he's getting zero support from them for issues with another machine, so it's a bit of a question of type of company you might want to support.

Also I'd add - the machine has limitations, for us doing a lot of fairly simple single-sided boards it's been good. We still have a lot of manual placement parts due to machine limitations, but for our production size it still makes sense (vs. a larger machine). If you anticipate growing in the next year or two substantially, you might want to upgrade to something with removable feeders to make swapping parts easier and dealing with a larger number of BOM items.
