    Some good tips on here, even after a good few years with my 1200 Tormek I've learned some good ones. I came along to learn more about the SE77 which I have just bought as I can see the advantages over the standard jig albeit that I cannot use all of the features (the outer end stop needs a tapped hole which my rest does not have). There is one tip that I would like to pass on, when mounting a plane blade in the jig don't push the cutting edge end in first as you risk inflicting more damage than you have already, put the opposite end in from the other side of the jig thus keeping the cutting edge away from the metal jig.

    1. Can the side of SG-250 be used to flatten the mirror side of a damaged chisel as you demonstrate with the diamond stone? 2. Independent of convenience considerations, can a skilled operator using CW-220 composite honing wheel produce as sharp an edge as with LA-220 traditional leather honing wheel?

    Thank you for this video. I've been having an issue with switching back and forth between my japanese waterstone and the standard 250 stone on my T-7. The basic issue is that the wheels are not staying true when swapping. For example, I will start with the 250 stone freshly trued, move to the japanese stone, again nicely trued, but then swapping back to the 250 the stone then has a wobble. I've tried marking the axis and stone and placing them in the same orientation each time and still it happens. Very frustrating.

    Hej Sean, you can solve it trough not locking the stone when you screw the Ezylock on the shaft. Give the stone a swirl in the opposite rotating direction and at the same time start the machine. this will thighten the stone flat on the washer between the Stone and the machine. Maybe you have to repeat it, but this is the easiest way.

    Hey, Chris from Italy here. Been a fan of your machine for a couple of years already. I actually own the T8 and make good use of it. Fantastic sharpening station, though there's a learning curve that goes with the various jigs (I own about 6 different ones). Anyways, just wanted to give you thumbs up for the vid... keep 'em coming! I'll finish off with just a small question: I'm interested in getting the Japanese stone and was wondering if a 200 would still be ok for T8 as opposed to its own 250. Quite plainly, there's a bit of a price difference between the two and I wouldn't mind spending a bit less if it were possible. Thanks in advance guys

    Hi Cristiano! Great to hear that you have a Tormek T-8 and that you follow our sharpening classes 👍 No, the smaller SJ-200 is not suitable for the Tormek T-8. You have to go for the SJ-250 if you want the Japanese Waterstone. I know it is a big investment but I think you would be really amazed by the result you can get with that stone, it's really a mirror finish. You will go to the next level of enjoying sharpening 😊

    When sharpening chisels to standard 25 degree edge angle, what is minimum edge protrusion past SE-77 jig required for use of SE-77? As finish carpenter of many years, I have butt chisels that are by now worn down very short. It appears they cannot protrude far enough for use with SE-77 tok achieve 25 degree edge angle. I have bought SVS-38, but don't like the way it grips some of my short chisels and also the fact that it is designed so the tool can rock as it travels across the stone. I feel like I can do better by simply holding the chisel in my hand, using my hand grip as a limit guide against the support bar to control the chisel and edge angle. Is the use of the support bar as guide without any jig a known method, and if so, does my need to sharpen shjort butt chisels sound like a case where this method would be warranted? Thanks.

    Hi Scott, I depends on so many different factors so it's difficult to give an exact answer. The steel you sharpen, the pressure etc. My recommendation to make it last as long as possible is to be very gentle during the wheels "run in" period and avoid putting to much pressure generally while sharpening. It won't make the sharpening faster and you will only tare down the wheel faster. Stay sharp!

    You want avoid scissors sharpening on the diamond wheels, unless you’re very experienced. It’s too easy to damage the wheel due to the steep angle of the scissor bevel. It’s possible, yes, but easy to damage the wheel, requiring a new wheel. No pressure used and I wouldn’t do it on a new wheel. Sharpen other things until the wheel has knocked down its extreme grittiness of being new.

I want to use the 360 grit diamond wheel when I need to do reprofiling work (which is very often in my line of work), Then change to the SG-250 for the sharpening duties, but I'm worried about the anticorrosion formula you have to add to the reservoir for the diamond wheel. Will the corrosion liquid ruin the SG-250 wheel if left in, as it's just not convenient enough to have to keep changing the water to freshwater then back again and back again etc etc?

    Hi Scott, there is no problem using the ACC-150 with the "normal" stones. On the contrary the ACC-150 also gives the tools you sharpen a certain rust protection. the stones also often have some steel particles left on them and can give the stone a red rust look which you avoid by using the ACC-150 with the stones.

    @TormekSharpening

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hej Viper Slide, When using the MB-100, then you use the scale above the "normal" scale where on the side is MB-100 stated. When you using the WM-200 AngelMaster without the MB-100 you use the normal scale. It is a difference of +18 degrees from the MB-100 scale to the normal scale. If you have an old WM-200 AngelMaster you can just add 18 degrees to your messurement. E.g. if you want an angel of 25 degrees on your chissel just add 18 degreess, that means you have to adjust the WM-200 to 43 degrees to get the 25 degrees. This applays only when using the MB-100 and you want to sharpen on the outside of the diamond wheels.

    Just got a T8 and having problems with my plane irons while getting them straight. Stone has been trued, followed the finger on the UNiversal bar tip and put the tool in the straight edge correctly. The problem I am having is that even though I am spending several seconds on the edges on each sode of stone (blade is 2”) I am still getting a concave very small concavity on my edge, which makes the edge short enough in the center to render it useless. I was hoping that this video showed how to glide a plane blade over the stone, because your manual is contradicting: it says to only go over the edge 2mm, and the next page shows a graphic of the iron almost off the stone. In other words the instructions on how to avoid a concave angle are not very clear other than ‘spend more time on the edges’. I signed up on the forum to get help. I like the machine and the simplicity, I am just a bit frustrated with the learning curve but I am determined to make it work as there is zero chance I am going back to diamond plates. I like this system, just need to learn to make it work! Help!!!

  • @TormekSharpening

    @TormekSharpening

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hej Juan, to avoid a concave result, the best way is not going over the edge of the stone. Another tip is to use less pressure when going over the edges of the stone, they should also rounde of with a slightly radius to avoid that the aggressive edges "digg" into the edge - a tiny thing but with effect. Please check also if maybe there is dirt on the mirror side of the chisel, this would lead to a convex result.

But there is no need for a secondary bevel, it is used mostly in hand sharpening because it's faster due the smaller surface. with a Tormek there are no advantages. If you prefer a more rigid edge, just sharpen directly 28 0r 30 degress on the bevel, especially for hard wood, regularly they are sharpened with 25 degrees. //Wolfgang

    So I'm a bit confused at this point. I would expect that you can a great edge off the Tormek in it's standard configuration. The idea that you need to buy another wheel to get an even better edge seems a bit much to me. Based on what I heard in the video the standard wheel followed by the strop will yield and edge sharpened to 3000 grit. You showed that but didn't test the edge. You then went to the 4000 grit water stone. So based on that I would assume the strop is redundant and even undesirable if you have the water stone. I'm new to the Tormek world and have been sharpening on diamond, water stones, and recently, strops. My finest water stone is 8000 grit and based on what I've read over the years most people go to 6000 or 8000. Now I'm wondering if you are using the water stone would it be beneficial to use a finer grit honing compound. As a customer I'm actually offended at the idea that after paying a pretty steep price for you machines you are also recommending another expensive stone. As I said I'm new to the Tormek world so I may be missing something. One other thing: When you were talking about sharpening on the side of the standard wheel the voice was a bit muddled and even close captioning didn't help. What I'd like to be clear on is if it's OK to sharpen on the side of the standard wheel. All in all a good and helpful video. I'll be watching more.

  • @TormekSharpening

    @TormekSharpening

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Eric, with the original stone (that comes with the machine) and the leather honing wheel you will get an edge that is razor sharp. The Japanese Waterstone is in no way necessary for chisels. We just wanted to show how you could get a mirror finish with the waterstone and a chisel shows that in a good way since it has a large bevel. Sorry for the confusion. If you use the waterstone you don't need to hone on the stropping wheel afterwards but we often do it anyway since the polishing paste gives the edge a shiny look which is very satisfying. Regarding sharpening on the side of the standard wheel it is okay but you risk making it not flat after a while (depending on which tools you sharpen)which can be an disadvantage if you would for example wan't to flatten the back of a chisel on the side of the stone. You can also true the side of the stone with the latest version of the TT-50 and the MB-100 but it can only be done perhaps 5 times since you have "less stone" from the side. So if you are looking to sharpen regularly on the side of the stone I would recommenced doing that on a diamond wheel.

    @@TormekSharpening Yes, it was the "bunch of other factors as well" part that I was hoping you would elaborate on. I understand "manufacturing" anything in this day and age must be impossible because it seems that as soon as a good idea appears there are a dozen companies that copy, produce and market it the next day for a fraction of the cost. Often there are quality control issues with the replicas but occasionally there are not. Anyone considering purchasing a Tormek is also considering one of the several copies that are out there. They look identical but the Tormek is considerably more costly. If you haven't already, making a video comparison of the competitors side by side with the Tormek would be a great way to illustrate to everyone WHY Tormek is superior. I am not very demanding or fanatical about anything but any machine should perform the task it was designed to do. That said, if there are two machines that perform the same task I don't need to spend X more dollars to convince myself that it performs better. Spending money for the sake of money makes no sense. I will say that I have watched many, many of your videos and for that I am grateful. I think it is a nice touch that you all at Tormek have taken the time to post and continue to post very helpful videos on sharpening. They are way beyond what I would ever want or need to know about sharpening but they are the best, most comprehensive videos available. I plan on using a sharpener to sharpen my woodworking chisels and gouges, not a commercial operation and I won't be performing surgery with them.
