Chiral vs Achiral Molecules - Chirality Carbon Centers, Stereoisomers, Enantiomers, & Meso Compounds
This organic chemistry video tutorial explains difference between chiral molecules and achiral molecules and how to find them by drawing a line of symmetry. It shows you how to identify the chirality centers or carbon atoms with 4 different groups as well as determining the number of stereoisomers using the formula 2^n where n is the number of stereocenters or asymmetric carbon atoms. This video also helps you to identify a pair of meso compounds which are identical to each other and a possess an internal plane of symmetry. It also discusses how to find a pair of enantiomers which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other such as your left hand and your right hand. Enantiomers lack an internal plane of symmetry.

From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you for this video. You are God sent for those of us that have a hard time understanding our professors at school. They rush these topics so fast and when you ask questions is as if you are not supposed to be in the class. God bless you.
you're pretty amazing! thank you soo much for these! I've literally passed every chemistry class thanks to you and these videos! God bless you!!

I like your explanations! thank u so much. but I really get confused searching for specific video, I think it would be better if u organize them in a playlist according to the topic ( isomers, ..) instead of a playlist for the whole organic chemistry
it took me 10 minutes to understand what my teacher couldn't teach me 2 lectures. THANK YOU

Goodness, thank you so much for this video, you explained the concepts beautifully. Much love.
I really enjoy your tutorials since High school... It is simple and can be understood clearly. From Caleb at PACIFIC ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY.

There are also some chiral molecules without a chiral center. For example dimethylallene.

hi, what does the S represent in the sterioisomers you drew?
@ninaabercrombie5246
2 жыл бұрын
It's the clockwise configuration based on the ordering of the different priority groups
So for carbon to be a chiral center, it must have 4 different groups attached to it AND it must NOT have a plane of symmetry?
@chrisesca9927
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but keep in mind, if it has 4 different groups attached then that automatically means it doesn't have a plane of symmetry
THANK YOUU

At 2:13 why did he add Hydrogen as well?
1:32 i still dont understand having four different groups and 3:26 shouldnt that be in the second left hand since you mentioned mirror image

Boss Bro!
Confused a bit at 8:17, you say that it cannot be divided as a mirror image but the way you drew it can actually be divided. If you lay down the molecule and cut it along it's middle axis like a sandwich you could split it. I think once you add in the H going away from or into the paper then you can on longer divide it in half. I think the OH group in that drawing should be coming out or going into the page to account for the implied hydrogen.
@zsib2085
Жыл бұрын
????? there's not another OH so how can we draw a line of symmetry anywhere lmao
@SpyderRacing
Жыл бұрын
@@zsib2085 You can draw a line of symmetry down the middle of 1 molecule and have 2 equal halves. You don't need 2 OH's to have symmetry.
Respecfully, I love you
at 6.22, I thought we found two chiral centers. how come the stereoisomers now became 8
@tifferdiffer123
4 жыл бұрын
There's 3. Carbon attached to OH, the tertiary carbon, and the carbon attached to methyl
Can you be allergic to Chiral molecules?
How to get the number of steroisomer
bless you
shouldn't the two molecules at 3:38 be identical?
@Mehk
5 жыл бұрын
No because the bromine are on opposite planes. Look at the bromine bonds. If they were identical molecules they would both have either wedge bonds or dashed bonds.
Increase the output volume on your videos!

2:57 isn’t that 2 conformations tho?
