I hand feed my chips but not squirrels bc they sometimes eat chippies.

Also there are many species of squirrels, red, black and gray where I am and they nest in the trees. Chipmunks on the other hand are all look same, nest underground, hibernate for the winter and are the friendliest animals in the forest, you literally can get them to eat out of your hand in about 3 minutes.

We see both in our backyard almost every day during the summer however it's more likely to see a squirrel as the chipmunks spend most of their time hiding in my mulch or running from plant to plant. There are hawks around so the chipmunks have many entrances to take cover. The squirrels don't seem to mind the hawk as much. Both of these spend a lot of time hiding nuts in my mulch which is 20ft by 60ft and has junipers across the top and perennials at the bottom. The mulch bed is on a hillside. Since the pandemic I work from home and if I turn my head to the left I can see the hill and all that goes on with the wildlife. This is on the north end of my house so the window doesn't need to have a curtain most of the time as the sun hits the south end of the house.
