Could it be the Bob Ross of Electronics? I find it relaxing to just listen to this even though I don't really have a clue what you doing.

Great topic and video. The multiplexers are nice if the input to drive is high impedance... I used this 4051 in a hobby project with 8 fans, 8 tach signals and 8 current sense lines to a mcu. The current sense lines to be ADC'ed could probably just have been muxed in the mcu with the ADC mux like you say earlier in the video.. but the tach signal, if you want to use the capture (capture timer by change on pin) (in PIC mcu that I used, not sure about the atmel/arduino), then multiplexing is great for selecting tach from individual fan and feeding it to the capture pin.

+bwack Thanks. Yeah, I used it for the timer in a PIC also :D To display RPM of 6 motors :)

great video! What happens if the arduino stops functioning? It should send 0 0 0 to the digital Inputs of the Mutliplexer right? So the Multiplexer always stays on channel 0. Can that be used as some kind of Monoflop?

Hi! Good explanation! Is it possible to set bits without Arduino? For example, i want to switch between outputs by clicking a button... So every new click some IC (or ICs) will be setting different bits to inputs of CD4051. And it must be cycled. I guess it can be done with some logic chips but really don't know how :) i will be glad if you'll give some clues!

God, I love these ChipChats. Does anyone know: is there is a corresponding 74-series CMOS chip that can be used instead of the CD4051?

I have a question, how current limit from COM to the terminals ? e.g. connect COM to the other power (no power supply) and connect the terminals to lamp, relay...So it's true , isn't it?

now i'm curious what you're going to need that 44v high-discharge lipo for ^^ apart from your nice electronics video, there's a thing to be learned here. even with "good" quality lipos, one should always balance charge them before use and also periodically.

ofc there might've been a manufacturing defect. let's see how hobbyking handles your return. i was under the impression that they actually test all the cells, as they also sell "b-grade" packs for lower current applications.

Great video - but I have one question after reading the data sheet: can I use it at 3.3V and check higher voltages with it? At the moment I use a voltage divider with my analog pin to do so, and if the CD4051 could handle voltages higher than its supply voltage I could just keep that single voltage divider between its output and the analog pin instead of having to put resistors on every pin of the CD4051.

Hi, good question.. It is not immediately obvious from the datasheet, I must say. But if you look at section 8.1, they give you some examples. It looks like you can only go up to the Vdd supply on the analog signals.. :) Quote from TI datasheet: "For example, if VDD = +4.5 V, VSS = 0 V, and VEE = -13.5 V, analog signals from -13.5 V to +4.5 V can be controlled by digital inputs of 0 V to 5 V."

There's no such thing as "Arduino microcontroller " . Correct is to say "Arduino microcontroller-based system" . You're offending people who work hard to learn and program mcu's directly by saying that
