In a nutshell, khakis are khaki-colored, cotton twill pants. Chinos are a bit dressier than khakis and they come in other colors such as navy, sand, Nantucket red, or baby blue. Today, the two terms are often used interchangeably even though there are slight differences.
00:53 History of Khaki Pants
Khakis have an Indian heritage. In 1848, the corps of guides wore it as part of their uniform in India. In the 19th century, a British military had realized that their scarlet red uniforms looked really great, but it also made them easily visible to their enemies and so they realized it was time for a change. The uniforms also soiled very easily whereas the dust-colored pants of the Indian uniforms never looked dirty. The word khaki is derived from Hindi and means as much as dust-colored or soil colored which explains the perfect name for the khaki pants. For the same reason, khaki pants today are still within a spectrum of dust and sand-colored, never anything else. Enamored with the looks of khaki pants, the British military adopted it as part of their uniform for the Mahdist War and the second world war.
Quality hallmarks of khaki pants:
1. They come in flat front styles and pleated styles.
If you have thin legs, flat front may look very pleasing, whereas if you have bigger thighs, a pleated khaki gives you more room and is more comfortable and looks better.
2. Made from cotton twill material and it's very sturdy and they're very tight weave so it's not very breathable. It's very popular with big companies such as target or best buy and they usually mix polyester or other artificial fibers to the cotton to make them more sturdy. If you want to wear them as dress pants or as casual pants, I suggest you stick with 100% cotton, they're more comfortable on your skin and you'll sweat less. They don't wrinkle as much as regular cotton.
3. Traditionally, they always have belt loops and never suspender buttons. They're very easy to take care of, you don't have to bring them to the dry cleaner, you can just launder them in your washing machine. They match really well with polo shirts, long sleeve or short sleeve. You can wear them with dress shirts such as button down colored shirts, even regular dress shirts that you wear unbuttoned but you can even wear a tie with them and a blazer.
Quality hallmarks of Chinos
Chino is derived from China, which is where the pants were made really popular. Ultimately, they were a little dressier than khakis but today, they're basically the same thing. The big difference with chinos is the color variety.
1. Chinos come in different colors. Navy, light blue, Nantucket red, or sand, you can even add light pastel colors in green or yellow.
2. Chinos have belt loops, zip fly, can have pleats, and usually have cuffs. Of course, you don't need turn ups or cuffs and sometimes they come without them. Personally, I like them because they add a little more weight and it means the pants fall more nicely and drape more beautifully.
How should you wear and combine khakis and chinos? Personally, I love to wear them in a more casual setting with boat shoes, without socks and a polo shirt, however, you can also wear them with a dress shirt, always wear a belt, ideally some brown shoes and in terms of style, I would say a derby, a monk, loafer, or even a pair of boots look really well. If you want something darker, go with a dark brown, burgundy, oxblood red shoe color.
In terms of shirt fabrics, you can go with solids, you can pair it with Bengal stripes which are wider stripes, finer stripes, small checks, just what I'm wearing right now. You can also wear oxford cloth button down shirts which is great because of the 2 tone look of the fabric and it works well with khakis because they share the casual nature of the garment.

That’s actually not an altogether bad idea, Gentleman’s Gazette.
I have for a long time wondered about when and why to use pleated or flat front pants. And now I got the explanation: thin legs flat front, muscular thighs pleated! Thank you.
When I was like 14 or so, I used to wear cargo pants all the time. My mom shopped for me and I was happy that could throw so much stuff inside them. I had no idea about style obviously, and just thought they are just fine. But one day, I asked a girl if she liked to go out with me sometimes and she said no. This girl told a female friend of mine later, that I'm always wearing those weird pants and that's why she said no. That left such a mark, that I never wore Cargo pants from this day again! So I should actually thank this girl in retrospective! :D

My friend, you should see how the ladies react to my "cargo" pants!!!! Basically, I wear a battle dress uniform (in black). It's weird how all of those gentleman stuff, is ripped from the military heritage, by snowflakes and yet... They decide what is manly enough? Well... How about being a man, without being an homage of someone else?

Especially tshirts, but I'm thinking maybe a blue sort of button down shirt? Either light or dark blue.. but with dark brown pants that I own I never know what sort of shoes to wear with it.

@@TheRomanTribune Dark Brown Khakis are more formal compared to Lighter Colored Pants. For that you can wear black dress shoes, loafers, sneakers or brown shoes.

Back in late 80s after I was discharged from the Navy, Ralph Lauren was really popular, and I always wore a variation on a theme. My favorite outfit was a pair of Khakis a blue chambray shirt, white socks, and an ox blood penny loafer. In my pennys there weren't the traditional pennies. I took the penny, 1 for each shoe, then for the right shoe I wrapped the penny in a $5 bill, forthe left I wrapped it in a $1 bill. So I always had $6 bucks on me, so long as I was wearing my dollar loafers.

I started caring about fashion recently. These videos are my new entertainment.
When I was in high school I wore chinos that had a belt in the back - a nice touch. (I'm surprised Polo hasn 't ever brought that back.) Starting when I got to college, I wore Brooks Bros. chinos. In those days, they were unhemmed and the tailor would custom hem them free of charge. Always cuffs. Alas, those days are long gone. And, yes, I am that old.

I have some Beige chinos, i usually combine them with a navy blue polo shirt tucked in with a brown pair of belt and loafers, i always get compliments on it.
A video about what color shirts go with certain color chinos would be great. There are enough videos explaining what a chino is.

Tan or Dark tan (khaki) is fine to wear with black shoes. Just make sure you coordinate the shirt and jacket. It has been done that way for decades.

I've gone by the rule that strait front trousers are uncuffed whereas a pleated front should be cuffed. Your feedback on that is requested.
Hi Raphael! Love seeing your videos and because of which i have learnt a lot about fashion. I had a question in my mind and it would be very nice of you if you could take out a minute and solve my doubt. I was reading an article in which it was mentioned that 'RTW' Chinos looks better than tailored cotton trousers. Do you also wear 'RTW' chinos or is it tailor made and if it is tailor made then did you find any flaw in it? Would love to hear your reply! Thanks.
Olive green is one of my favorite colors, and coyote brown. might just be the soldier in me feeling nostalgic. Though Coyote brown is a nice color in general.

Corduroy is the best fabric IMHO if you are not going for regular business, classic, or formal style. Corduroy shirts are great. I haven't had the best luck with having corduroy trousers fit me as well as I'd like. A corduroy sports jacket goes with so many smart casual combinations you wouldn't have to duplicate a look for a long time. I recently got many compliments wearing a corduroy sports jacket with an olive Irish grandfather's shirt.

Hmm.. maybe it's because I am in college, but I see chinos as an alternative to jeans, just slightly more dressy, and pleated and cuffed khakis as out of date and something older guys would wear. The GAP Lived in Slim is an incredible pair of pants, very stylish and fit super well. Anyone looking for a youthful casual pair of pants should check those out first.

I agree. Chinos lend themselves to smart casual or semi-formal, but can also be everyday trousers. I do view chinos as being more summery; I would never wear jeans in the heart of summer mainly because of the heat, but also because they're colder weather trousers, whereas chinos are hotter weather trousers.

Really enjoyed your explanation of the origins of Khakis and Chinos. I spent fifteen years working at an international airport, and saw all manner of different dress styles. Some guys looked like they were going to the county landfill, while others looked very sharp. One day, I saw a guy wearing khakis with black shoes and a black quarter zip sweater. I always thought it would be too much contrast, but it looked sharp. I have a pair of brass colored chinos that I wear with black chukka boots and a black sweater now. I'm very confident wearing that outfit. Best wishes to you!

I go with Meyer and Brax, mostly. It helps they have my size, I have quite long legs and am somewhat overweight.

When I wash my chinos I always get white streaks on them. I regularly clean my washing machine and none of my other clothes have this issue. I wash with a powder detergent at 4o degrees celsius - would you please have any advice, thanks!
Another excellent video..!!! Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I always referred to Khakis by the brand name, you got it; Dockers. Question for you my friend. What is your take on turtleneck shirts? As a 60 year old guy, I've worn black turtlenecks with khakis in the past with kind compliments. Question is, how about a sport coat with that combo? As always, love the content brother. Keep it coming please.

Yes, of course a sport coat goes with a turtleneck. A corduroy sport coat would be perfect with that combination. Wide Wales are more casual, tight wales are more formal.
Great video, I am trying to find a good pair but failing. I am a size 30 (Netherlands) but my calves are huge so they fit me good but not the lower part. Even the regular fits are to tight. Any ideas?
The word Khaki came from Khak which means dust, it's a Persian word also used in Urdu and Hindi. Urdu is a mixture Arabic, Persian and Turkish language so that's why we use word Khaki which was actually taken from Persian language.

Khaki is a color, and a fabric, and a certain cut of slack. When you talk about khakis, you need to be specific about what KIND you're talking about.

@@efandmk3382 In Farsi/Persian/Irani Khak = soil/dust "Khaki" simply means "Earthy"... it can mean the earthy color or more common when something is dusty. Hindi and Farsi have had many linguistic and cultural exchanges forth and back through the history. Both are decendents of the same Slavic people who migrated east for about 2-3000 years ago. The pants called khaki are not an Iranian invention though. Pyjamas however come from Persian words "Pa Jame" meaning "leg clothing" so basically "pants" :)

I know plenty about your culture. I get 3 to 4 calls a day from Indian people at call centers who take jobs from my country and contribute zero to our economy. They don't pay taxes or buy anything at all (because they have no physical presence). It's not their fault, but I've lost jobs to India and watched as companies I work for interview Indian after Indian while lowering American wages.

i would like for you to discuss the leg opening at shoes, i am 65 and do not like stright leg, or the classic bagginess, but i want the pants to reach the bottom lace at my shoes, not tapered that it looks like skinny pants

Khak is persian word meaning soil or dust, therefore, khaki means dusty colour. Persian was still the official language in india during the the 19th century. Khaki is also used in Urdu Punjabi and Hindi languages originally it was derived from persian

Does anyone know of any European brands that sell classic cut unhemmed chinos, (besides Cordings, they don't stock them in olive)?
Do you have any advice for someone like me that has a small waist (28) but has large thighs? I do a lot of lunges, squats, run and I haven’t been able to find a brand that has chinos that fit my waist but don't flare out the pockets. Any help would be heavily appreciated.

I need pants that are a little elastic because I have a leg that is a little thicker than the other which always caused me headaches when it comes to shoes and pants. Usually I just go to stores and try whatever is available and don't even bother to check what they're called but this time I'm giving online shopping a try (a lot better offers and discounts, A LOT better) so I need to have an idea how a certain pair of pants is going to feel before I buy it because returning it after use is difficult as well. Would Chinos and Khakis feel extremely tight or are they a bit elastic? What do I need to look for?
