Chinese Type 039A Yuan Class Attack Submarine: Myths vs Reality

Ғылым және технология

The Type 039A, B and C 'Yuan class' attack submarines are conventionally-powered diesel boats of the PLAN. They're equipped with air independent propulsion enabling them to stay submerged for weeks. This video clears up the common misconceptions about the Yuan class.

Is there any news of upgrades to the Song class boats? Despite somewhat old, these are nevertheless capable vessels, and the hull in spacious enough to accommodate internal upgrades, and it would make sense to stretch the useful lifespan of these boats, even if only for short range, or coastal-defence use.

A 3600 ton submarine is not for coastal waters. It possesses full capability of deep ocean / blue water missions and for longer durations. Shallow water / Coastal submarines are usually less than 1000 ton in size.

Not even in the same class. Also AIP is the be all and end all. The RAN investigated it and came to the conclusion that for our requirements the negatives wouldn’t be worth the benefits. You’re comparing a medium sized SSK designed for coastal use with a fleet SSK that usually carries out missions reserved for SSN’s.

The point of tube fired ASCM is to present an enormous threat against ASW frigates or corvettes, most of which have extremely poor air/missile defense capability. This would also force the ASW boat to focus on actions defending itself instead of hunting the submarine, increasing the chance the submarine would break away. Cold war era frigates and vettes have extremely poor performance against even subsonic seaskimmers, and there's a reason more recent ASW frigates have emphasized increased anti-air/missile capabilities, despite the dramatic increase in cost/tonnage required.

Personally, I think that if Vietnam does not have a conflict with China, we should buy Type 039A class submarine and Type 054A frigate to add to our current fleet. I am very worried about the expansion of Muslim Indonesia and Malaysia in the SCS. Personally, I think that Vietnam and China are brothers, we should cooperate with each other, our culture is similar to China's and China has helped us many times. Together we will protect our noble East Asia culture. Brother 🇻🇳❤️🇨🇳

I am an American. The events of the 1980 war between China and Vietnam are part of history. Like so many events in that area of the world, there are no doubt regrets on all sides. However, would China really be wise to sell a pretty decent submarine to the last country it went to war with? Likewise, would Vietnam really trust China to deliver their best quality product to them? Both sides might want to start any military sales, or purchases, at a much lower level than a big-ticket item like a submarine. Try something non-lethal like military trucks, helicopters, etc. All that nice boring stuff that actually make up the majority of military spending. The logistics professionals in Vietnam know what to look for. Today there is an opportunity for Chinese sales to Vietnam. Russia is now years behind with its spare parts delivery for all kinds of products. Their mess began prior to the war with Ukraine. Couple that with the fact that Vietnam appears to not be a nuclear power. It might be safer/smarter for Vietnam to add a few military items to their normal trade with China.

I personally think that submarine manufacturing is very difficult. The ultra precise machinery is crazy expensive is very rare. China has had some problems which may lead to some problems compared to paper stats. Maybe 10-15% less. This also includes quieting. Therefore I’m not convinced Chinese shipbuilding is as competent as Russian and definitely not American submarines. They truly are the masters of the silent hunter.

You don't use NATO's naming/nomenclature such as Yuan, Song, Ming etc for NON-NATO weapon systems unless you're a NATO media outlet. Simpy Type 039A / B / C or whatever the native owner names them, is sufficient. You don't name other people's properties with your new names.
