Chinese solar inverter teardown (020)

We're taking a look at a chinese solar inverter that Tweakers.net user databeestje sent me along with the recently torn down Enecsys inverter.

This is a HF inverter design, that means a two stage design 1) input to HV upconver - i.e. the transformer (also does MPPT at the same time), and the second stage to create the 50Hz AC (with output inductor & cap filter). Being grid tie I would also expect another inductor, but that is an area I know little about.

The transformer should be a high frequency isolation one, the diodes rectify the voltage at its output and then the final IGBTs form a full bridge to synthesize the final ac voltage.

Nice. I kind of expected you would hook it up and measure efficiency and output current THD, but just looking at the PCB was enough :)

min 11:45 please help me to know the ZD1 zener diode model to replace them, I only see the blue label on it, but dont know the volts or watts capacity to buy them, I bought 12 inverters of 600 watts, 2 came fault, but the diode, an smd transistor 5v regulador and the ac in or output fuse are bad, the others 10 are working with 2 330 watt 30 volts panels in paralell each inverter, since marchs without any problem . I just cant identify the zener diode value

So, how the microcontroller control the final h bridge mosfet? Only through those two small optocoupler?

...I have newer than this but can't beat the simplicity of this types of grid tied inverters..only flaw on this device is they only accept 1 input...i tried parrellel since can't do serial ,over dcv input range but the + banana terminal melted... the terminal should adapt the mc4 connector than banana plug speaker terminals...I had to solder mod it to a mc4 version.. everything else was surprisingly ok after years of use...y&h 600w brand was my first try..

I have a problem with some inverters of 600 watts, I bought the replacement trasistors 30NM60ND but I dont know the value of the zener diode with a blue label conected to STF30NM60ND ZD1,ZD5,ZD3 AND ZD4 Please help me to know the volts and watts of those zener diodes.

if zeners are between source and gate pins you can use 12v or 15v zener diodes

+PowerElectronicsBlog The seperate heatsink inside is for extra cooling by the fan airflow. Why you suggest they should have done it differently? It's actually a quite nice construction in regard of cooling. Maybe you should have a second look sometimes before you dismiss good engineering effort. Besides of that again a nice video, keep it up!

+Mar phy As I said in the video, why would they go through the effort of putting in an extra heatsink if they already have this big heatsinked enclosure? It's just unnecessary extra stuff. Why have the extruded aluminum external heatsink anyway if you're not going to use it? Because that external heatsink is more than capable of cooling the unit if that piddly fan and internal heatsink are enough already. They could have saved a couple dollars on the construction and made it infinitely more reliable by ditching the fan.

Has anyone taken apart a Hybrid inverter charge controller ? I need to change out the charge controller or tweak it , mine was for a AGM Battery and I want to up grade to Lithium LTO Batteries & change the 60Hz to a newer version the Model is EA SUN POWER 5KVA 48v 230v Pure Sine Wave Inverter 50A Charge Controller !

5:15 yeah I think you are overblowing it a little bit. 30A can cause quite some heating, but nowhere as much as when you've got 100A flowing, or even 50A!

..the max a panel can go is less than 10A for 36dcv 72 cell ~350w ..but if they are parrelleled than it might get there..

It’s not really fair to single out the US or even China about low quality solar hardware/installations. I have 4.4KW installation in San Francisco and the device you show here will never pass state code. ‘Island’ converters are illegal, period. I.e. if the main grid power goes down so will my solar supply. My hope is that the Tesla Powerwall will be able to bypass that limitation so that power outages are not a problem.

+telecrate Of course it's not the US or China, it's just that these areas automatically become the center of most complaints about crappy materials because most of the people that use this and exist on the internet are from the US. Solar is incredibly expensive in the US (typically about 2-3 times more than in Europe) so people much more readily try out lower quality alternatives. And as far as China goes; they just essentially have nowhere near the same kind of safety regulations. So whereas you'll literally never find this kind of inverter in the Netherlands or Germany, they're a fairly big chunk of the market outside of Western Europe. It's just a consequence of the market. That being said, the US is not an atomic market; SF and LA are the highest cost of living areas in the US and consequently have a much higher quality and control standard than e.g. Nevada.

Hi Power Eleconics, I'm Dutch and live in Mexico. I read some of the comments from the readers and I agree with you US installations have definitely other standards than the EU's. That doesn't mean its bad, for example EU is way to much restricting but if it comes to quality EU wins. I do have a question. You definitely seem to be a specialist in power architectures and know more about it than I do. I want to buy a specific Chinese micro inverter of the type WVC1200 or WVC600. Its not the best inverter from an efficiency perspective but it is the best on price performance and the fact that it has 4x300 Watt individual MPPT controlled inputs. further more it has a reasonable cheap monitoring system. Can you tell me if this inverter is an inverter passing the cretinism. There is very little known about this inverter but it looks good to me. I hope you can help me with this Ik hoop dat je me hier mee kunt helpen. alvast bedankt, de groeten. the next site shows this inverter in limited detail. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHmYsrFpgdSoXco.html

it worked good for a month and one of the half bridge parallel mosfet failed with a mosfet short. i removed it and the one of the other parallel mosfet. it worked Like that for a few months. Later it stopped working and i opened the case and saw the 5A fuse at the mains line blown. The reason was shorted mosfets prior to mains. The interesting part of this design is that, these mosfets have no connection with microprocessor or a driver. They somehow drive themselves completely with the secondary. No optocoupler or any direct connection. i'm still trying to understand how it works. And needless to say all mosfets are fake chinese immitations
