Chinese Rocket Fireball Over California | CreativeLive Night Photo Week Shoot | July 27, 2016

While our CreativeLive crew was filming a star photography course for Night Photography Week in the Alabama Hills, we saw something amazing, and were able to capture it on film.
The fireball streaking across the sky was the largest, brightest, and longest that any of us had ever seen. It began to break up slowly as it entered the atmosphere, and lit up the entire sky. It came from the West over the Sierra mountains (Mt. Whitney), and streaked across the entire night sky to the East, towards Nevada. About 5 minutes after we stopped filming, we heard a significant boom far off into the distance.

I was in Yosemite at 11,000 ft when this flew right over our heads. The most beautiful thing I've ever seen/will ever see in my life. Bright green tails, across the Milky Way, with campfire as the only light pollution.

We saw this!!! So that's what it was? Space trash? Launch debris? A Chinese rocket? We were out in the middle of the woods, camping in Sequoia National Forest and saw this amazing sight! The entire campsite cheered and whooped and hollered. It was the biggest, longest, widest, brightest and longest-lasting "shooting star"-type thing any of us had EVER seen. We thought it must not be a natural phenomenon because it burned blue-green in parts, and normally meteors are not this long and slow and HUGE. We figured if it were a comet, we would have all had plenty of warning. .... We heard a soft "boom" sound about a minute later so I am assuming it actually landed. We surely hope it did not cause a fire (hope it did not land in the forest or a populated area). Any news on this? Thank you for posting this! What a beautiful filming of a very special event! We will never forget this - and made lots of great wishes for World Peace and Harmony on this "shooting star"!

Awesome Video! Love the Sony A7. I own the a7sii and love it for its low light capability. That's what I use to shoot all the low light attractions on my channel.

In Fresno it was massive, with burnning embers from different spots on the bottom. So low i could see the detail of the rectangular undercarriage and slow i dont know how it didnt drop. It was completely silent at patrol helicopter altitude and passed right through the Fresno Yosemite Airport landing approach heading east where i knew it would crash into he foothills. I was so sure, i called 911. I also went to the FATerminal website and sure enough the tower to ground comms are archived and they were basically just in awe they saw it and that it was going through so slow. So interest to me how the hec it wen up and over the sierra nevaea mountains to Utah ! Lonely Spec has a vid that really captures plugging away up and over the mountain range and then desending on all he way to somewhere. Can reenterered space junk be navigated and silently popelled etc..?? So many unanswered questions..

looks like it the junk fell into a satisfactory shallow re-entry tragectory, hens the relonged hot & bright scatered re-entry that took time to burn complete with little at all debris making to the ground level, a steeper re-entry trajectory would of been brighter an faster with a high possibility of Atmospheric compression burst debris making successful ground fall creating droves of casualties an injuries to populated areas.
