Chinese Norinco 56S-2 AKS Rifle: History, Features, & Range Time

Ғылым және технология

We start the week off by taking a preban rifle import to the range. This rifle was manufactured in China under the Norinco brand name and sold in the USA by B-West in the mid 1980s. The select fire Type 56-II was one of the final military variants of the AK created in China, and semi-auto versions were sold here marked AKS and 56S-2.

    This Norinco is so beautiful. You can tell it's been well cared for. I was shocked to see it had a hidden cleaning compartment! Never would have guess that existed for a folding, non-solid metal stock. Kinda cool how it pops out almost in the shape of a pistol mag. Congrats on a great purchase!

    Beautiful rifle Misha and congrats on the acquisition! I put about 250 rounds through my new SAM7SF this weekend. It ran great. I did enjoy the new FIME enhanced fire control group. I don’t have another Arsenal/FIME group trigger to compare it to, but I liked it. I forgot to wear gloves and moved my hand a little too forward which touched the hot metal hand-guard retainer / barrel... Won’t make that mistake again but no big deal.

    The 'new' FIME FCG is really just the standard FCG that they put in all their guns now. It started with the VEPR FM series, then in the 107R, and now in the SAM7SF. Its a perfectly good FCG, I've even bought some and put them in some of my older guns like SGL31. But honestly? the original double hook milled FCG in the 2013 series of SAM7SF I do prefer.

    These came in just before the 1996 Assault Rifle Ban sold with a bayonet, sling and two magazines. Because it was sold in the preban rush it was far too expensive for me. @@revmarcell6449 The Federal AWB was from 1994 til 2004. It was not an executive order, but rather a small part of a much larger thing called the 'Crime Bill'. This was created by Congress and passed by both houses. Clinton was in favor of it to be sure, as were nearly all Republicans because it was 'tough on crime', providing strictor laws, longer jail terms for many crimes, and allowed for thousands of new LE officers to be hired across the nation. The AWB was nearly an after thought. Clinton signed that Bill into law, but it originated in Congress.

On the 81, you push into the base of the cleaning kit itself and it releases out. I'm sorry if I'm explaining this poorly, but it's very easy to do. Cheers from Canada!

    Hello Misha :) Thank you very much indeed for this very informative review. I have the same Type 56-2 except it has black synthetic furniture and it is an airsoft gun! Everything down to the smallest detail matches the features on your rifle, including the hidden tool kit in the folding buttstock. It was once sold by the RealSword airsoft company which, according to what I have read here and there had close ties with Norinco. It is obvious to me that most of the outer parts of the AEG gun are "real" parts, but, as you certainly know much more than I do on the subject of Type 56 rifles, I would like your opinion on the black synthetic furniture, which doesn't seem to be very common on Type 56-2 side-folders: actually the only photo of a Type 56-2 rifle dressed in black I could find was a Norinco rifle shown at IDEX 2023 in Abu-Dhabi. Another detail I would like to mention is the bluing of the RealSword AEG, which is dark blue rather than the much lighter bluing usually encountered on Type-56 rifles. Regards from France! :)

For me, i saw a Polytech Legend, as-new in box w/ everything in bags at a gunshow around the same time...maybe a year earlier? I have one just like it, a lil more beat up ofcourse cause "chinese aks suck" according to previous owner. But this one strikes me as odd since it has a Norinco Mak-90 marker receiver. Is it maybe a parts kit put together on a Norinco receiver or is original?

    Very cool. Oh by the way you mentioned that this particular model doesn't rust as easy as polytech offerings. Do you happen to know why this is? I've noticed it myself when comparing a mak90 to a nhm91. Edit. Sorry I missed the part where you mentioned it's a military type mat blueing. Thanks again.

  • @misha5670

    @misha5670

    Yep, i think its just because the Norincos have a less shiny finish, so it just doesn't show rust/pitting/prints as easily. I think the Polytechs were built more to look pretty than to be long-lived and military tough.

    KFS must have really liked the 56-II style as these are among the few Chinese AK variants where Polytechs are more common than Norincos. Usually the reverse is true. Then again, KFS managed to import a lotttt of guns for only doing it 4 or so years.

    @Jerrol Hale Cost on these back in the late '80s was around $250 for the folder, so retail in stores was between $300 and $350 typically. Just keep in mind, that was '80s dollars. Today? that's more like $750-$850. Still a good deal, but really about inline with the prices we see on current imports like WASR10 or ZPAP.

    These Chinese barrels are not as good as Russian AK barrels. These barrels heat up pretty fast and decreases it's range unlike russian barrels which might take double the rounds to decrease it's range. So that is the myth about chinese ak here in Pakistan. What's your take on that?

    The Chinese export variants to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Vietnam, India, etc are all downgraded because Norinco and the state factories weren't subject to the same quality control when under foreign contracts. The only exceptions to this are US and rifles made for domestic users.
