I think supplementing Pinyin with Wades-Giles would provide more clues to how to pronounce the words. The actual sound would be between ch'ü & qù. Then again, we are using English, the language with probably the most exceptions to its own rules.

For initials it is the same in Romanian. We need a vowel after them.
Do we say "and" and "drink" the same way in Chinese language? (On different screen now)
...and there must not be a "tü" syllable either because if it were to be pronounced properly, there would automatically be an i added there as well, which replicates the sound that "qu" makes (I might be wrong, but that's my understanding of it)
Do you say "and" and "drink" the same way in Chinese?
When you make those sounds (ji/qi/xi) do you put the tip of your tongue behind the bottom teeth or behind the gum under them? I feel that depending on where exactly the tip is they might sound slightly different. Does that make any difference for you?

Isn't the rule because after j,q,x there never is U, so no need to write it? In contrast with LÜ and LU, where it actually makes difference?🤔 And when you wanna type ü, in pinyin just write V instead. When you want to write for example 绿 lü --> write lv. As symple as that ☺
in “ jeep, cheese, ship” the tongue and the tip of the tongue are in a different position than in “j q x “?
Very funny to hear the Do Re Mi La Ti because Mandarin don't have S+i pronounce as [i] but as Epsilon
I am Russian native. In russian, we have soft and hard consonants. It seems to me, that J Q X is the soft consonants. And U with umlaut is soft too. In russian, after the soft consonants goes only soft vowels. That's why we don't need two dots.

For j q x + u without the dots, the phonological reason is that you can never have j q x coexist with 'u' so that's why when ju qu xu are written they are pronounced as 'jü qü xü' its even impossible to pronounce them as 'ju qu xu'.

That's correct. I would argue this rule makes it inconsistent; makes unnecessary extra rule for new students that they have to memorise j q x are actually paired with ü, not u. Although we can argree that ü is unavailable or difficult to type in many keyboard format.

Oof, this video hits a lil different for a British northerner. When we say jeep, cheap and sheep we tend to purse our lips a lot and raise the end of our tongues so the xi sounds more like shi when we compare it to sheep, and therefore we also have the same more open mouth shape for ji and qi :'). I wish having different accents didn't make things so fiddly ಥ‿ಥ.

My teacher explained that they don't have the umlaut because they can't be paired with normal u sound. qu is pronounced with the ü sound, not with the normal one. But there will never be a word with qu pronounced with the normal u. That makes sense since the umlaut there might be too much, and you should just remove it, and remember this rule. There will never be j/q/x/y (I think also y) paired with a normal u sound, only ü sound.

Actually we can't tell TA is he or she when we are talking about someone.

That's why l say Chinese is a contextual language, especially when it comes to speaking.

But we can see the difference when TA is written: 他 he & 她 She

Another thing, we only write in characters. So we can tell the difference from those two characters. But it doesn't work for Pinyin.
Is Xi same as English She or See?

ü after jqx doesn't have dots is just because there are no legal pronounciations of jw qw xw , could be very weird too any Chinese people.

and jiu qiu xiu are legal pronounciations , like 救 求 修
拼音的 j 只是接近英語發音[dʒ] 拼音的 x 只是接近英語[ʃ] 無法列成兩個等式 最簡單的判斷即聽英語主播讀「習敬平」 「習xi」和「敬jing」總是怪怪的 這就是讀最接近的英文音所導致 Pin yin - j and [dʒ] are just similar. Pin yin - x is only similar to [ʃ] Both pairs are not the same. Whenever you hear CNN anchors say the name of the China's president習敬平 It's always weird and awkward to hear -- j replaced by [dʒ] and x replaced by [ʃ] are the main reasons these anchors pronounce 習敬 strangely.

Why using latin "Q" if it sounds nothing like Q instead of "Ch"?
You are very good at teaching pinyin and tones, and I enjoy watching your programs very much. However, your explanation on the missing of two dots on top of u that follow j q x is misleading. Students would likely pronounce ju, qu, xu, as jiu 纠, qiu秋, xiu休 if they follow your explanation. Please let us know if you have a better way to explain it, otherwise just tell us that it is a ‘rule’ as told by your kindergarten teacher long time ago.

It's just my hypothetical answer and actually it works well with my students. My elementary school teacher told us to remember it in a funny way: The chicken(j)will eat the two eyes of the fish(ü) when they meet.
But ü in Pinyin is written as the letter v.
