None of the provinces of China has as much diversity and as many attractions, physical, cultural, ethnic, as the South western province of Yunnan. A legend says that when a prince of Dali visited the Tang-dynasty court (618) he told the Emperor that his land was south of the rainy weather. The Chinese Emperor then named that territory Yunnan,-meaning South of the Clouds. Mountain ranges dominate nearly every part and are home to a great variety of plants and animals. On their valleys and slopes live 24 different ethnic groups with their own languages, lifestyles and customs. These are the pictures from my visit to the capital, Kunming, to Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-la. A special place with special history". I started with the "Impressions Lijiang Show" with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at 3.200m looming behind the outdoor theatre. A spectacle of local culture, with 500 Naxi Ethnic group people singing and dancing. It is the highest altitude production ever staged, directed by Zhang Yimou, while in Kunming in the "Dynamic Yunnan Show" the performers are local residents of ethnic groups with original costumes, produced and directed by Yang Liping, capturing the essence of original songs and ancient dances.

Visited Yunnan in 2011 and stayed 5 weeks in Shangri La - such a beautiful area of China - people so friendly, scenery amazing. Would love to return but suffered with altitude sickness north of Lijiang, but this video holds so many memories.

I watched that show and the mountain at the background of the stage was the real one. The mountain was the landmark of Li Jiang. I really miss that place.
