China's Reformers and Revolutionaries | Sun Yat-sen and Kang Youwei

Consider Supporting HoH: / houseofhistory The last decades of the Qing empire saw the concurrent rise of a strong reform movement and the first truly modern Chinese revolutionary party - the Guomindang of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. This week we’ll look into the background of the important reformers and revolutionary movements within China, that eventually toppled the Qing dynasty. To be fair: this video is centred more around Sun Yat-sen, as the most important reform movements have already been covered in two previous videos. Sun Yat-sen’s story, however, well, the man certainly lived an adventurous life, to say the least.

Sun the greatest Chinese of all time. “To work out the salvation of China is exclusively a duty of our own, but as the problem has recently involved a world-wide interest, we, in order to make sure of our success . . . must appeal to the people of the United States in particular for your sympathy and support, either moral or material . . . because we intend to model our new government after yours; above all because you are the champion of liberty and democracy. We hope we may find many Lafayettes among you.”-Dr. Sun Yat Sen, “A True Solution of the Chinese Question” 1904

The Guomindang of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was instrumental during China's Xinhai Revolution. This revolution resulted in the abdication of the last emperor, Puyi, and was the stepping stone to the Warlord era. This will all be covered next week! *Time codes* 0:44 The Reformers 3:35 The Revolutionaries 5:37 The Revive China Society 7:33 Sun Yat-sen's Program 9:10 The Tongmenghui and Uprisings 12:34 Epilogue *Sources* Baum, R. A very well done and well documented video. The period between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th in china is incredibly interesting. Maybe you said it and i didnt get it, but Kang also influenced Sun's xingzhonghui in another way: while kang was considered a cultured and respected intellectual, Sun was for many years seen as a chaotic peasant with no knowledge of chinese classics. this alienated Sun from the the young intellectual/students class. in fact he repeatedly relied on secret societies members for the revolutions. Only after the work of many of sun's supporters (like Miyazaki torazo and his book "my 33 year's dream") the public's perception of him improved, and students started to look up to Sun as a leader. Again, great video. New sub!
