China’s Quest For Self-Sufficiency | Preparing For Dangerous Storms - Part 2/3 | CNA Documentary

President Xi has asked China to “prepare for Dangerous Storms”, and so the country is working towards greater technological independence, amidst an ongoing semiconductor war with the U.S.
China is also working towards greater energy self-sufficiency, ramping up its nuclear energy, and green energy infrastructure projects. In food supply, it is pushing out new technologies such as sea rice, to improve its self-sufficiency. Central bankers are also doubling down on efforts to internationalize the RMB currency, and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
What does the quest for self-sufficiency in so many sectors of the economy mean for the country? Prominent thinkers and political scientists share their opinions.

That Chinese guy said china will never be self sufficient in all technology. But china doesn't need to be self sufficient in every technology, china needs to be self sufficient in advanced critical technologies. Which it is currently succeeding. According to the Australia study, china is leading in 37/43 critical technologies. This proves china is on the right track, and can achieve self sufficiency goals.

That's a pretty poor study then, and likely exaggerated, if not outright lies. What critical technologies? China can't even make A.I. work properly, it can't manufacture it's own chips, or even build infrastructure within sensible guidelines (fake fire hydrants, no proper sewage to prevent floods, etc.). Your building facades are collapsing, your electric cars keep blowing up in balls of flame. Leaders in self destruction mostly lol.

The US is preparing a war with China. We not only raised our retorics, but also inreased our military presence around China, formed several new military alliances against China, and shipped more and more weapons into east and southeast Asia. The general Americans don't feel the threat from China. Really there is nothing to fear about since there isn't a single Chinese troop within 7000 miles of continental US. I can understand why the Chinese people feel threatened by us. Our war ships and bombers are on their doorstep.

This mindset revives an unhelpful Cold War-era framework that split nations into rival groups on Manichean terms, usually preventing cooperation across a range of vital issues. Its been clear about that from the beginning. Since the soviets have been gone since 91 the US has gotten less globalist because for it there was never economic benefits only security. The US citizen were sold a lie that as countries got rich they became democratic. China proved the US wrong. So why would participate in something that it doesn't benefit from Only 12% of US GDP comes from trade, 6% of that comes from trade with mexico and canada. Unlike Europe that built Russia war chest because it absolutely needs Russian oil. After all , US has decided that her control of technology should be used in a manner to impede China's progress. China will continue to make mistakes in various fields of progress but they will overcome many of these obstacles faster than many other countries. Her independent progress in the space station simple points to this direction. They're just pointing that as China becomes increasingly self-sufficient, it will be less deterred in engaging in a full-scale war (if it comes down to it). Russia experienced significant roadblocks in its Ukraine invasion due to its reliance on SWIFT, trade etc. China might not be as deterred if it decides to invade Taiwan or forcefully claim islands in the South China Sea. USA, despite its superpower status for hundreds of years, has for the most part exercised restraint and its democratic system ensures a system of checks and balances. Can't say the same for China if an irresponsible power-hungry leader comes along.

you guys in asia, this includes the japanese, look to the west and say "we must build what they have" and you do, sometimes you do it even better then the west. but by the time you have caught up, the west has already moved on to the next challenge and technology. this is because development in the west is organic, from the ground up, and not dictated from the top, and again i include japan and south korea. asia does not have new ideas, or creativity, which is the first step to innovation. it can innovate existing products, services, and methods, but can not come up with their own, or more importantly universal ones. until asia solves this problem, it will always play catch up. japans economy simply reached its limits, no outsider derailed it, the same is true for south korea, and certainly china which is systematically worse than both. it may be politics, it may be economics, but the culprit i think is culture. asia has a culture of staying within the lines. so instead of blaming others, perhaps you all should look at yourselves because you wont be able to rely on just numbers.

You don't think 1.4 billion people is already hard enough to govern, and they wish to take on more population to make their jobs harder, not to mention vastly different local cultures? 3) Taiwan belonging to China is very much written into the constitutions of both the PRC and the ROC, and internationally recognized under UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which also recognizes the PRC government as the sole legitimate government of China as a whole. So what's wrong with the PRC trying to prevent Taiwan from independence? 4) "...and then moving outwards" - To where exactly, and to what end? To be number one in all fields compared to the world and produce everything internally is unrealistic and inefficient. That's why we have globalization. However, in China's case, self-sufficient is must. Good thing is you don't have to be the top to achieve self-sufficiency in some areas.

@Tang ba, you catch that too.😊👍👍👍 Good listening and observations! I was going to point out that China developed their own Space technology without US help. In fact, been blocked, banned and censored to suppress China. And, China came back, more advanced and leading in Space technology. So, that talking blockhead is lying to himself to feel good but miserable inside. 😂😂 China don't need to be 100% self-sufficient. It allows Comparative Advantage economics to work globally so that there is inter-dependent relationship to build a more robust economy. And, this win-win shared economic prosperity is for friendly nations and who shared the same common goals. Just like why would you want your entire family members be engineers only? They should be encouraged to be doctors, Accountant, bankers, lawyers, Architects, etc so that diversifications can strengthen the family and the community they serve.

As expected of someone who don't know how semiconductor industry works. These chips manufacturers produce chips, yes but have you ever asked yourself who produced the machines that allow them to produce the chips? I guess no and just like many ignorance, believe the chip manufacturers develop these machines themselves. The entire world's most advanced semiconductor machines come from one and only one company called ASML. ASML is literally the most important company in the entire world. Because of the bans, China does not have access to their latest machines but they do have access to the prior generations. Given that ASML is the most important company in the world and how much USA distrust China in respecting the rights of companies, often like to reverse engineer technologies and call it their own, the bans not gonna go away any time soon.

@@Lu5ck you forgot to mention that ASML is a Dutch company. So that leads to the question on wtf gave US the right to stop them from selling the machines to China. BTW ASML will not have the chance to grow to the size it is without TSMC, earlier generations of their machines were crap, they would have gone bankrupt if not for TSMC

Also TSMC patented the immersion technology which was the most important advancement before EUV. So yes, the chip manufacturers do not make the machines but as far as I know, the machine manufacturers are begging to collaborate with top tier manufacturers to develop the next generation machines.

Slavery, Colonialism and Colonization are all evil things done and benefited by evildoers. There's also one thing in common among all these Empires & Empire Dwellers. That is so long as they have gotten their plentiful 'cheese', it's a beautiful wonderful world out there. Speaking of empire/empire dwellers, just to let you know that for centuries, they have consumed as much as 95% of the world's annual output of raw materials & natural resources. It is also true the fact that they burned fossil fuels and polluted the world for nearly two centuries, and as a result, today's global warming/climate change is caused mainly due to this pollution. “Let China Sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world.” - Napoleon Bonaparte The plain truth is that every time China rises, China has been suppressed by the European powers/ Western alliance for centuries.. (For instance, Opium Wars). The truth is the light.. Knowledge is power. Wolf pack came to eat up China when it was rich. After WWII no wolf pack want to visit poor China. Now China is rich again, and the wolf pack return. People just don't see why we are peaceful all these years, Actually it is because that wolf pack is busy in the Middle East , then Europe and now Asia. Also because we are poor, but after we work our ass off to get rich, the wolf pack return. Wolf pack food route: Middle east -> Europe -> Asia. "If two fish are fighting in a river an Englishman must have passed by." - Native American saying 🤔 'Standard operating procedure for Sun Never Set Colonial master Britain was to divide & conquer the different ethnic groups in their different Colonies.' It was South Asians from India sub-Continent whom the British used as servants/soldiers that kept their Sun-never-set Empire of over 50 Colonized nations worldwide, strong and lasted for a good couple centuries. South Asians were 'work horses' doing the real job while Colonial master Anglo British were 'show horses' accumulating wealth and enjoying it from generation after generation to this day. True. That's the very reason they went to India first over 200 years ago. They knew giant India had an abundant labor force which they could use as a stepping stone before they could conquer and practice Colonialism world wide. The fact the former Colonial Powers had left countless trails of 'WRONGS' that former colonial nations are still trying to untangle and get them right, to right those wrongs. While at the same time, former Colonial masters have been busy blacklisting, boycotting and sanctioning all those nations that try to right the wrongs of all their sins/wrongs of the past; since the world is still under their mighty military, economic and political control and influence; although it seems dwindling lately as China and others are rising gradually and steadily, thus shifting the balance of the power of the world.. Peace and prosperity to thy world! 🙏
