China's Millionaire Pigeon Racers (Full Length)

Ойын-сауық

While most "nouveau riche" happily spend their new money on shit the old money has already deemed acceptable, China's spoiled young princelings aren't content with horses, sports cars, and insanely tacky watches alone. In tribute to the intrepid bootleggers who've propped up their country's market economy, China's rich have taken arguably the worst bird of all time, the pigeon, and slapped a Louis Vuitton logo on it. Racing pigeons are the new thoroughbreds here, with birds auctioned for hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece and races netting millions for the championship flock. Which sucks for the old timers, whose balcony-bred birds don't stand a chance against these million-dollar superflocks. And which just sucks in general because, well, pigeons. Fucking pigeons.

Vice started out in Canada and the U.S. Back in the day there was something humorous about cynical quips about North American and European culture, even if the journalists hated the subjects they were reporting on. Now that Vice has gone global, the sarcastic personal approach shows a real lack of depth and understanding, mostly because Vice promotes a sort of "what the fuck" attitude. A piece like this could have been interesting, but the nebbishy reporter really doesn't give a fuck that these owners are inviting him into their world with respect, something he is incapable of reciprocating. He makes some stupid remarks about what he thinks about pigeons (fucking pigeons as the description puts it). Even the translation unintentionally mocks the subject. For example, Liu Yung (probablyYong, but who cares right?) remarks about the race "没办法残酷的比赛" "it's a life and death race" and we get "Life is cruel." "Do you have a girlfriend" No of course not, he fucks pigeons. Haha. And don't blame the translator, I mean, you could walk down the street and find Chinese majors that could give it a second look. And the icing on the cake is the stupid orientalist comments at the end about the whole race being a shell game and perfect in a culture where appearance is everything. Which is such a fucking ironic comment about a sloppy piece of superficial reporting where appearance is nothing. Ah well, it's all about the clicks. What can you expect from a mini-consortium that goes right along with our fucking post industrial simulacra media for belly laughs. Maybe Vice is innovating here, let's call it "Troll Journalism."

Asian always give gifts to their guests when they visit, especially when it's something like a TV interview, or special occasion. To automatically assume that it's of a devious nature and for the sake of pomp and circumstance is not only culturally insensitive, but extremely obtuse. I really hope that they watched this program after you left and had it translated to them word for word so they understand how scummy you treated them. The disrespect you showed this man's hospitality and kindness disgusts me and is another nail in the coffin for VICE in my opinion. What an ignorant reporter who dares to say most "rational" people see pigeons only as vermin. Pigeons have been used since biblical times, Alexander the Great kept a communication system with pigeons, and most recently, pigeons saved thousands of lives in ww2. Pigeon racing is a great sport with good and bad people, like every other thing out there. Plus, you dont need to go to China to make it sound like a mafia. Ive raced pigeons and almost every bird I ever had was freely given to me, and had as much fun as anyone. I even got a 30th place (out of 2000 birds) with a pigeon bred by a 10 year old English carrier and an unknown bird that showed up in my backyard once, against people who travel to Belgium every year. What matters is loving what you do.

People from the west always assume people from other cultures want to impress them. How about - that is how people do things in their cultures. Like in Africa people just say hello to each other even if you are strangers and don't know each other that is just how the culture is. In India people always ask if one has eaten as a polite way of knowing if you are okay. Americans and Europeans travel to other cultures and naturally assume people are soooo crazy about them when people are just being nice as their normal way of life. I see the same thing in Africa, an African will leave you his own bed and sleep on a mat just because you are his guest or even slaughter his only goat just so he can welcome you into his home.. It doesn't mean they are trying to impress you cause you are American or white or yellow or rich or some reporter. When you visit other places, just enjoy the experience and appreciate the culture being different from yours.

As a Beijinger I reckon VICE captures a very vivid scene of the life of a certain group of Beijingers, who are old school in their ways of conducts and values. In this globalizing modern world with western cultural output, it is valuable to hold onto this traditional hobby Beijing in spite of the interviewee's government connection. Glad my city is getting some exposure though it's really unveiling the subtlety of Chinese politics and the "elites within the system"'s way of life.

But he actually has the audacity to question the beautiful heartfelt gift he was given. Even going to the point of making the assumption that it is a form of INTIMIDATION, this is their culture and it is older than history, the Chinese tradition of gift giving is a sign of ultimate respect and all he does is shit on it. I would love a new version of vice where they might actually RESPECT and appreciate the cultures they report on. Perhaps it is just a "smear campaign" though because of the western world's rivalry with China. So who knows? They are either ignorant or just plain disrespectful, OR are pushing an anti China agenda.

What are you even on about? This has nothing to do with people disliking criticism of the Chinese. The interviewer is just being a dick in general and also pigeon racing is not just a sole Chinese thing, it is being done all over the world and that is why people are so upset about his behavior. He is basically being an asshole to every pigeon owner on the world watching this.

Correction, pigeon racing first started during the Greek Roman era, in Europe . The Europeans further developed the sport when immigrants first came to America they brought their homing pigeons with them . After many years the military took notice then during the 1st and 2nd WW the homing pigeon was utilized. The most famous homing pigeon that saved the ‘Lost Battalion ’ during 1st world war or 1918 was Cher-Ami today he sits at the Smsithsodiam Institution.

if you want to make a quality report on any subject, you need a reporter who has interest in the subject. This dorky elvis Costello looking ignoramus is NOT the one. he literally doesn't seem to comprehend the difference between a feral pigeon and a racing pigeon, which are thoroughly bred racing animals, incidentally tougher than any man or horse. To be as tough as a pigeon, a human marathon racer would have to survive being attacked by tigers and bears and still manage to finish his run.

Pigeons are neither vile nor vermin, they are cute....I sometimes go for a quiet walk up in my building terrace in the afternoons, and I love watching those little critters just going about frolicking here and there, putting their beaks together and making love all the time...I especially like it when one of them flies down close and looks at me with those doe eyes....normally I keep my distance because wild pigeons are very shy but sometimes I try to see how much close by I can get..the trick is to keep your body relaxed and not stare too much because they can sense this and fly away. Can't imagine why anybody would hurt, kill these creatures.

You voice a very negative view and certainly aimed at discretiting something you know absolutely nothing about. While in some places pigeon racing need to improve some practices, most people who race pigeons are honest and care for their birds. You could have provided a much better, balanced, and objective approach even if you hate pigeons or pigeon racers.

Here in Vancouver, the Chinese seem so absurdly interested in pigeons. They photograph them constantly and stand around in little crowds to watch them. I couldn't understand it. There was no way I could believe that they didn't have pigeons in China. But perhaps this is part of the reason they are so interested in them here!

bigtttiime I absolutely believe that. They will eat anything. Germs and disease are not an issue in their culture as far as I can tell from living in Richmond the past two years. I have watched them unapologetically spit, piss, hack and blow their noses on to the side walk or into their own bare hands and wipe it on their clothing hundreds of times. Once, I even saw a woman allow her young son take a shit at the top of an escalator at a Canada Line station. I hate to generalize groups of people at all, but I mean, since this is clearly considered 'normal' in their culture, then I'm sure our culture must seem completely appalling to them as well because I didn't even know there could even be such differences in such fundamental human areas as what I have learned since living here.

heatedfrost I have lived in many places with fairly decent sized Chinese populations before but something about Richmond being more of a Chinese city than a Canadian city I guess ... Not sure if you have ever been here, but it's almost 60% Chinese (to clarify: Not 60% Asian, 60% Chinese) and something like another 15-20% "other Asian nationalities" And you are much more likely to find signs, store names, maps etc in Mandarin than in any other language including English. I am only going by some of my friends who's parents were born in China (so they've visited there) that the way it is here, is also the way it is in China. So I can't tell you first-hand that it is a fact. But they tell me it's pretty much the same in mainland China, just a bit worse. Most of our Chinese immigrants here though are very new to Canada & Richmond essentially *is* a Chinese city in the western hemisphere. I don't know anyone who was born of Chinese decent who has these habits at all. So I really just chalk it down to social-cultural differences. I have even met several not-so-recent Chinese immigrants who have also dropped these habits so I think it really is just culture-shock.
