China's 2019 gaokao exams

Subscribe to our KZread channel for free here: sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
One of the world’s toughest college entrance exams, the National Higher Education Entrance Examination or gaokao gets underway across China on June 7.
More than 10 million candidates, mostly 18-year-old high school graduates, will sit the exams over two or three days in 2019.
Their score determines whether they can gain entrance to a Chinese university.

    I wish the world was a place where students still studied this hard but by their heart not because of external pressure

  • @yiweihuang9825

    @yiweihuang9825

    Many students do choose to study this hard willingly, probably because they know that this is their best chance for success. Unlike most other countries, China has a large population, and so paths like sport and becoming a celebrity is harder due to the large amount of people competing. But say doctors (cliche ik but it's true), you can never have too many doctors, or scientists, or astronauts. Which is why many choose to focus on their education instead of say sport.

  • @yiweihuang9825

    @user-go1zn3wd4m2 жыл бұрын

    As a Chinese, I want to say that Gaokao is the most fair exam. Whether you are poor or rich, this exam determines your destiny. Even if your father is poor and your grandfather is poor, as long as you study hard, you can change all this, from a farmer to the president of the company. However, with the rapid development of China, the pressure on young people is increasing. Parents often tell us: "if others work harder than you, you will not be able to find a job and live in this busy country after graduation." Therefore, there are more and more talented people, and the standard of "excellence" is higher and higher. In the past, getting 80 points would be considered outstanding, and now getting 90 points would be considered not hard enough - because others have got 95 points. The Chinese call this phenomenon "neijuan". As a high school student, I'm going to attend Gaokao next year, which I feel a lot of pressure.

    I am a Chinese who came aborad at the age of 17. The most crul thing for me is the teacher publicly inform you your ranking in front of over 50 students. I was ranked about 150th over 600 students in the same year and I feel extrmely uncomfortable. Another harsh thing is we took 3 or 4 exam each week then they divided students into 2 or 3 groups based on your exam results each month. I was always in the first crateria but I can't imagine how the others in the last crateria feel. When I was in China, it's normal for a student to get uo at 6am, turn back home at 10pm, and have all-day extra classes on the weekends. I was the worst at math in the whole class, you know what, I am one of the top students at math in my current school since day one and I take IB math AA HL. I SEE A COMPLETELY NEW WORLD

    并不是这样的,高考自杀的人非常少的,要说自杀,日本韩国比中国自杀的多多了,当然跟欧洲美国比不了,压力的确大。高考只是为了一个有更好的未来 另外关于留学的问题,留学是为了躲避高考,因为想要在高考中获得一个好成绩的确难,很多有钱人就让孩子去国外有名的大学捐钱读书,这样子,这些孩子回到中国也会显得有很厉害的学位,但是这样的人也是非常少的,出国留学的,都是有钱人,继承家业的,如果钱不够多,还不如在国内读书,所以中国的留学生非常有钱,他们要不是有钱人后代,要不是官员后代,躲避高考这最公平的制度,他们回国也不需要找工作,只需要继承父母的公司就可以了,但是非常少。 很多留学生是出去学习知识的,他们是真正的留学生,经过了高考,大学的拼搏,他们回国也会进入厉害的公司,无数公司抢着要。 留学生分为两种,出去混学历的,如果有钱,回来会继承父母公司,如果父母没有钱,回国以后也很一般,高考不行才会这样做 一种是学习先进知识的,这种回国会很多人抢着要

    This “GaoKao” is absolutely insane. When that day arrives, policeman and woman are stationed everywhere, the streets are quiet, people are not allowed to honk their horns, taxi drivers give students free rides and some places handout food. This test basically determines majority of the Chinese’s, living in China, future. What tier of university they can go in, what future masters they can pursue, what PhD or future work they can get. It is extremely unforgiving, but the ones “pass” are probably one of the most hard working and talented individuals in the world.

If they do they would only study majors like arts or language (things of least importance). Both universities are state-owned. They are part of a program in China to produce very talented engineers, scientists, politicians, etc. These students later on begin their master, PhD, Doctorate in Harvard, MIT, Yale, Oxford, Princeton, etc. Wealthy individuals would just sent their kid straight into Harvard or something in the US. They don't dare mess with talent programs issued by the country itself.

    It reminds me of bad memories in my Gaokao...I read a novel before the exam to make myself feel more relaxed then on the exam day, during the Chinese literature, the novel story kept poping into my head...Then before I realised anything wrong I just mistakenly filled two answers into wrong blocks.😥 ...the blocks on the exam paper need to be scanned into computer and distributed to different places to be marked seperately. Our teacher had told us again and again NEVER fill answers into wrong blocks. I had never made that mistake even once before, but I just did that during my Gaokao...It was a 12-point loss, and even 1 point can make you fall behind hundreds and thousands of students...😖

    @Tejas Misra Doesn't matter if that dude solved it in 30 min, geniuses exist and he would have solved the questions of his specialty in gaokao at the same time too. Secondly JEE is an _engineering_ entrance exam, it's syllabus contains questions from college level concepts and not basic highschool so of course a person with an engineering degree should be able to solve it, doesn't mean that they can solve all of them. The level of questions in JEE as said by 'experts' does have a slight edge than gaokao. Lastly, gaokao is for admission in many different colleges where they take you in based on your exam result while JEE is basically just for admitting into the top IITs. Mainly 1.5 million students competing for 7000 seats. And I think thats insane. But I dont think these exams should be compared, students go through equal pressure under all of them

    Japan used to have the most difficult college entrance exams in the World, but it has now been scaled way less difficult to accommodate for a greater portion of the population to go to college. In fact, they encourage even more people to continue their undergrad and postgrad studies to increase the quality of education and level of knowledge among the population. China, on the other hand, got stuck with maintaining the difficulty that it puts a huge strain on the youth population. The prospect of failing gaokao forces other parents to reach deep into their thin pockets to send their kids to college outside Chine (e.g. USA, Hongkong). Even then, that doesn't assure their kids anything, because some are driven towards death and corruption by other rich Chinese kids to be involved in a cheating scandal.

No entrance exams, only assessment exams to see where a student should start. No essays, no committee reviews, no letters of recommendation. None of that. Once registered success or failure was completely on the student. I worked at the college while I attended classes. I had access to student transcripts. Like I said, I rarely ran across a failing student. Usually the failing didn't have a desire to be there. I went for Accounting, the professors were tough but fair.

    We have similar exam in Vietnam for high school graduation and entering the college/university. Though it won’t be hard as this but still it’s on a national scale. I’m glad I passed high school back in there before moving the US. All that knowledge makes my college days here feel like a breeze.

    A girl in my college is from Henan Province, which has a large population. She told me last year 1 million students took this exam in Henan, the competition is so fierce in some provinces. Especially in Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan.

    Not only that. Asians are pitted against each other. You have super smart Indians Chinese Koreans Filipinos etc. all competing for that Asian quota in academic or employment opportunities. Meanwhile other racial groups have it way way way too easy simply because of “diversity”
