China Made a ‘Japan-Town’ then Destroyed it, Here’s Why

Why did China destroy its own Japan-Town? In this video I travel to Foshan in the south of China to see a Japanese-themed street formerly known as Ichibangai. Since opening it's been completely overhauled, see why.

I had a Korean roommate in college who tried to explain the relationships among the three countries (Japan/Korea/China). On the one hand, you literally have thousands of years of conflict, sometimes horrific treatment by one of the countries of the others. On the other hand, people in all three countries are often fascinated by the others and adopt styles from the others to rebel against the oppressive monoculture back home. So while random dudes on the street will tell you everybody hates Japan, J-pop (and K-pop) are huge everywhere I’ve been in China.

Japanese spent most of their history fighting each other (and tribal cultures suchas the AInu or Emishi), Chinese history could be quite brutal too (Whether in the form of the taiping civil war or Mao's "reforms". Imperial Japan wasn't even that bad until the 1930s. Korea for most of her history was safeguarded by China (also denies having committed atrocities in vietnam. Holistically speaking, Chinese-Japanese relations pre-Opium Wars weren't that bad, certainly better than Korean-Japanese relations. Anytime China and Japan came into conflict was usually because the Chinese and/or Japanese powers at the time were allied with (rival) Korean kingdom(s). For most of their shared history, their relations were pretty amicable, with deliberate cultural exchange and at least limited trade even during times of isolation. It only really deteriorated after the Opium Wars. China, which was much more powerful than Japan at the time, took a pitiful beating from western powers and subsequently motivated Japan to become more like the colonial European powers so that they don't end up like China... and somehow ended up being more vicious than any of them, given how short the time frame was.

As a Chinese/Hong Konger, these anti Japanese people are the conservatives in China, from what I've seen most of them rarely been to overseas and only sees things from the old Chinese perspective where the hatred begins with the invasion and the identity shift from inferiority to inflated ego alongside the rapid growth of China in recent decades. New gen (post millennial) don't really care about much of the past and they don't have the reason to. Speak as one of the millennials I can't judge what the conservatives do because I can't possibly understand what they've been through, I just live with it while embrace all the goods come from all the cultures.

@@sigma2.093 Now, Minioso did take down most of the Japanese elements in their stores. Because they are large enough now. Miniso did copy from Daiso. That's very funny. In the beginning, it did call itself a company with Japanese Design. But they only hire a Japanese designer. A nobody I guess. When Chinese people found the truth, it was criticized by the Chinese people too. Soon they claimed miniso is a 100% China owned company. And after years of development, now Miniso is much bigger than Daiso. Daiso can't compete with Miniso now. Daiso had 5000 stores while miniso had 6000 stores. But Daiso starts in 1977 while Miniso starts in 2018. We are the supplier of both companies. When Daiso visited China, they will go to Miniso's store. When Miniso went to Japan, they will go to Daiso's store too. It's very interesting.

Of course, I know the history and I've read about genocide acts committed then. Nevertheless, the consequences of the war started by Japanese and their acts during this war was also the dropping of the atomic bombs, in result of which all the civilians, no matter who they were, including women, children or infants perished in horrible sufferings, and those that survived still suffered a lot for many years. The scenes, pictures, films of this, as we all know, are horrible. The fact that China has copies of Japanese areas is something I wouldn't have thought existed. China towns have been literally in every country I've ever been in, but not so much Japanese towns. I know Japan has sort of theme park places of Europe and the US. So I guess if you can't actually do foreign travel this is the next best thing. This is a light on a part of the Chinese experience that only you give in your videos. It would be very interesting to understand the roots of why this area is failing. The difference is, China town in Japan is made by Chinese and is an actual sharing of culture. This was an appropriation of culture. A bunch of “Japanese” shops not run by Japanese. If it had been an actual Japanese town run by Japanese immigrants it would’ve been fine, but they are treating Japanese culture as a novelty. That is bound to fail.

In studying other cultures, one will always realize how important ones own culture is and is the most important thing in life to preserve. China understands this. Mixing only dilutes and corrupts; destruction. In fact that is what makes China interesting; that it's not an amalgamation of everything and devoid of beauty. Look at America, it's become soulless and trying to spread the illness. Mixing only harms and makes ugliness, erasing all in it's path.

I wonder if it's just one of those typically Chinese "lets just build for the sake of building stuff" things. All these ethnic towns in cities are a double edged sword. On one side it increases cultural exchange and understanding, on the other side it lumps everyone from that culture in one spot almost like "you're not welcome anywhere else" style. Making integration difficult for everyone. We had a Japan street in my city. With bookshops, homegoods and restaurants. The pandemic put an end to it all. It's a shame really. Restaurant Sakura was the only place in town with japanese karaoke and sukiyaki. "China town" is still standing. Although it's more "orient block" than anything.

The fact that a "Japan Town" street opened in China is quite interesting. It is too bad they did it without the cooperation of Japanese people. It's not so long ago, there was anti-Japanese demonstrations in 2012 in China, that got so out of hand, even the government had to reel in the strong nationalism. But that statement that ALL Chinese people dislike Japan is a blatantly lie, maybe politics & history that may be true. However, I've met plenty of Chinese people who are really into Japan: the food, the culture, the trains, anime, music. I mean China, Japan and South Korea, I think they all sorta hate each other because of history and competitiveness. I wish we can heal the wounds of the past and at least come with good terms one day.

We have to empathise with how they feel about Japan and not judge them for still hating Japan. The Chinese and Korean have every right to feel that way, still because the leaders of today and in the past never expressed remorse or regret to the Chinese people for the war crimes, but they extended their remorse to the Americans for Pearl Harbour. In general, we appreciate Japanese traditional customs, food, manga, anime, products and so on but we should never forget history. If we allow them to revise history as they did, their current and future population might eventually feel justified in repeating history they never knew.
