China: Is the economy in serious trouble?

China's economic model of driving up GDP with vast borrowing and building worked when the country needed new roads, bridges and airports, but appears no longer sustainable as the economy has shown major signs of slowing.
Sky's Helen-Ann Smith has travelled to Zunyi in China’s southern Guizhou province - a city full of unfinished infrastructure projects; empty apartments, and half-constructed tunnels.

Just because the UK is facing serious problems doesn't make it comparable to China. That is a false equivalence. The UK's economic problems are mostly a function of it's politics. In China, the economic problems are structural and no amount of politics can fix them in a hurry. But if the UK doesn't get it's act together it will soon make Italy look like a model of good governance!

America and countries in Europe have experienced similar situations, when manufacturers of shoes, clothes, home appliances, etc., flocked out of those countries. Korea and Japan have also experienced the same thing. But the situation did not make these countries experience an economic crisis or bankruptcy. Why? Because it is a matter of competitive advantage, comparative advantage, and a matter of ordinary market mechanisms. If it is now starting to happen in China, it is indeed time for China to experience a similar transition after years of mass low-wage labor-based industries. When China starts producing airplanes, electric cars, superconductors, etc. it is just a necessity for a country that has entered the "advanced" level. Selling 1 airplane is worth more than selling thousands of shoes from a dozen shoe factories in the Ningbo area. That's also why America can still able to compete with China in term of GDP etc, even though the low-labor manufacturing industry left America many years ago.

Cute comment but simply not true. This growing crisis took most people by surprise.

Sky news is always funny - this place is called Zunyi (遵义;遵義) is a prefecture-level city in northern Guizhou province. I have never heard this city in my life. Sky News is interviewing a old lady who is residing in a poor city which is situated in one of China’s poorest regions. 😂 I think that motorway is no older than few weeks. OMG some ppl are truly desperate.

The construction of the right side road stopped about five years ago. It is not about money but a tunnel which engineers found a big geological issue. The right side of the road opened last week via a different route.

Waste happened when unexpected geological issue occurred. China is making people living condition better by investing in the infrastructure constantly! Not like the USA, trying to borrow money everywhere and the infrastructure still is crap!@@joshuajoseph5998 kzread.info/dash/bejne/i3l5rc5vl6ragrA.html

Market economies recover quicker. China planned economy has fewer options. Millions of people stuck with depreciating assets (mortgages way underwater). World move on to better economies elsewhere for goods and services.

when economy sentiment goes down, people save more spend less and get laid off. It's normal economy cycle. We always compare China economy against U.S. However, China is expecting to grow 5% GDP in 2023 with 0% inflation, U.S is expecting to grow 2% GDP with 4% inflation in 2023. U.S credit card balance skyrocketed and China saving rate raise. Both counties are dealing with their economy issues. One had an overheating economy and trying to cooling down, the other had a cooling economy and trying to stimulate the economy.

The data is correct, but the credit card usage rate is 38.62% in China, which means less than 40% of people who have credit cards are using credit. And those people who use credit cards are not for personal use, mainly for business. (Business credit card included)@@InterviewsWithTheAncients

The US is an advanced economy with a $70,000 per capita GDP. China is a developing economy with a $12,000 per capita GDP. Advanced economies don't grow at the same rate as developing economies. Unlike China, the US can easily sustain its debt. Also, an awful lot of personal saving in China are in the form of real estate, which is not looking so good right now. China is destined to do what Japan has done for the past couple of decades, i.e, stagnate and slowly decline. But unlike Japan, China is starting from a very low base.

Considering the shaky economy, I'm keen to know best, how people split their pay, how much of it goes into savings, spendings or investments. I’d be retiring/working much less in 5 years, and sometimes earn up to $160K per year, but nothing to show for it yet.
