China has economic 'upper hand' yet Xi & Putin 'need each other to form counterbalance against West'

Leaders Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin framed their nations' ties as a stabilising force in a chaotic world as they met Thursday (May 16) in Beijing, where the Russian president is seeking greater Chinese support for his war effort in Ukraine. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on Russian-Chinese bilateral ties, FRANCE 24's Genie Godula is joined by Zoe Liu, Fellow for the International Political Economy at the Council on Foreign Relations.

For France, most business is done with the rest of the EU, then the USA for 8% of their trade, China for a bit more than 4% and then mostly asian and african countries. It's quite diversified.

Is it about who holds upper hands or a mutually beneficial relation? Even the journalists on mainstream are not pretending about how much they dislike certain people.

It's good to have peace and friendship between neighbours. This is a relationship based on mutual trust, respect, and benefits, unlike the domination, intimidation and disdain with which the U.S. treats its vassals.

It's not that there is any friendship between China and Russia, there are a lot of Chinese people complaining about Russia taking away Chinese territories in history. It's just that geopolitics and Western repression of these two countries force them to stick together.

This is a marriage of convenience. Russia needs China's support in Russia's continued war effort, while China, because of its shaky relations with Washington, is cuddling-up to Russia, hoping to forge a strong alliance with the pariah state in the event of further deteriorating relations between Washington and Beijing. Let's not forget, too, that the Chinese Foreign Minister has made overtures to the US to improve bilateral relations and to settle the Taiwan issue, but these overtures have largely been rejected by Washington.

Eu and usa is top most trade purchasing countries from china. Still russia got weapons technology and semiconductor via china. Aid for Ukraine is simply waste. Russia got their own big industrial complex and china backing with semiconductor and lots. Ukraine victory is impossible if china backs russia.
